[ha-Safran] Sad News

2023-06-14 Thread Susan Dubin via Hasafran
With sadness, I am reporting that Helene Gersuk, a long time member of AJL and
AJLSC, passed away June 13, 2023. Helene was the synagogue librarian at Valley
Beth Shalom in Encino, California. She regularly attended conferences while
still working at VBS and qualified for advanced accreditation for the library.
With sadness,

We are starting to consider this - members reserving/requesting library items
than having a pick up time curbside outside.
There are many factors to consider, so I am wondering whether any other
synagogue libraries are looking at the possibility.

Mazal tov to Heidi ! I can’t think of a more deserving mover and shaker of
KIdilit.
I add my gratitude to the Kar-Ben publishing.  .  It is so appropriate that the
publishers of books that are on the shelves of so many synagogue, school or
center libraries will support librarians who work with and advocate for the
readers of those very books. Below please see the ctitera:

• Active involvement in the Judaic library profession or related fields
promoting Jewish children’s literacy
• Strong advocacy for library/literacy services to children and youth
• Positive role model to colleagues and the wider community
• Innovative approaches to Jewish children’s literature or library services

Heidi’s activities  meet all the conditions listed above.

Dear AJLers,

It is my honor and pleasure to inform the AJL Community that Heidi Rabinowitz,
host at Book of Life Podcast and librarian at Congregation B'nai Israel in Boca
Raton, FL, is the winner of the 2020 Groner-Wikler Scholarship. This
scholarship, generously underwritten by KarBen Publishing, is presented to an
AJL member who demonstrates dedication to Jewish children's literature and
library services.

Heidi's passion for Jewish kidlit and spreading the word far and wide using
many different venues and formats impressed the Scholarship Committee. Please
join me in congratulating Heidi on her winning this scholarship.

We thank Joni Sussman and KarBen Publishing for their generosity in enabling
our community to have extraordinary librarians like Heidi join us at our

We are looking forward to seeing her – and all of you - at the AJL Conference

We have been using OPALs, if it is within your

card pocket, card (if you're using the latter two),
tell you when an item is overdue, creates reports
etc.

I posted this in the summer, but I got a limited response.

I've volunteered to help get my synagogue's library in order. There are two
parts to the collections. The adult reference materials are held in the chapel
and will be checked out on an honor system; the children's library is in a room
that is being converted into an official library. Of course my synagogue will
be joining AJL.

Another shul member who already works in a public school will be in charge of
children's collection. She wanted to know what program works best for a
collection of about 1,000 title. We want to be able to check out books using a
scanner, so I'd also appreciate a suggestion as to what scanner you'd recommend.

I want to let everyone know that Dina Herbert was safely delivered of a baby
boy last week. Dina and Ben's welcomed their baby  on Thursday, May 2.
According to his father:

"Say hello to Shai Michael Cooper, the newest addition to the Cooper family.
Like his sister, his baby size classification according to the Virginia medical
standard is 'peanut.' He’s 17 1/2 inches; 5 lbs., 8 oz.
He came out with a relatively easy delivery and immediately decided to nap,
which either means he’ll be a happy baby or he’s just still getting ready for
The Crying to Come. Either way, he’s our cutest dudeling."

We wish Dina and family all happiness and a speedy recovery in the weeks ahead.
We look forward to seeing them all in California in June.

I'm very sad to report that Leah Adler, Head Librarian of Hebraica-Judaica at

to Israel is today.  As plans for a memorial at the Gottesman Library of
Hebraica-Judaica materialize, we'll send out a notice.

Throughout her illness, rather than talk about herself and her physical
discomfort, Leah expressed concern for others--about the effect of her absence
on their work loads.  In the workplace, Leah was always disarmingly candid and
honest; she never hesitated to bring up important issues, regardless of how
challenging those issues were.

After decades of service, Leah seems inseparable from the history of Yeshiva

At the end of this calendar year, Elliot H. Gertel will retire from his endowed
position as the Irving M. Hermelin Curator of Judaica, culminating nearly 20
years of dedicated service to the University of Michigan Library.  Elliot has
worked for the Library as the Curator of Judaica and liaison to the Jean and
Samuel Frankel Center for Judaic Studies, initially as part of the library’s
Near East Division in the Area Programs unit and later, on the International
Studies team.

During his time at the University of Michigan, Elliot has worked tirelessly to
build the Judaica collections and to support faculty, student, community, and
external user research.  Since 2014, Elliot has also served as curator of the
Jewish Heritage Collection in the Special Collections Research Center. Under
his stewardship, the Judaica Collections have grown to well over 150,000
titles, with strengths in Modern Hebrew literature, Jewish history, history of
Israel, Judaism, Hebrew Bible, Holocaust studies, and Yiddish studies.  Among
Elliot’s noteworthy additions to the collections are the extensive Alterman
Collection of Passover Haggadahs, a number of art books by or about the
celebrated Polish-born Jewish American artist Arthur Szyk, a collection of
Sephardi Biblical commentaries, and numerous rare and antiquarian volumes in
Hebrew, Yiddish, Ladino, and Western languages, along with art books and
portfolios and artifacts.

Elliot’s curatorial expertise has been in evidence in many of the exhibitions
in the Library and those the Frankel Center has featured, including recent
exhibitions on Haggadahs and pushkes (charity boxes) in the latter location.
In 2017, in conjunction with the bicentennial celebration of the University, he
curated a major exhibition in the exhibit space of the Special Collections
Library entitled "Striving to Stimulate Serious Thought: Jewish Scholarly and
Cultural Life at Michigan Across Two Centuries."

Elliot has made lasting contributions to Jewish studies and the community
through research, presentations, and to the profession through multiple roles
in service to the Association of Jewish Libraries, the Jewish information
Committee of the ALA Ethnic and Multicultural Information Exchange Round Table
(EMIERT) of which he has been a longtime chair, and the ALA RUSA Sophie Brody
Medal Committee.  He has served in numerous capacities in AJL including as
president of the Research Libraries, Archives, and Special Collections (RAS)
Division and for a number of years as AJL's liaison to ALA. In 1994, he devised
a series of joint AJL/ALA programs, many of these--twelve so far at AJL and ALA
conferences--which he coordinated and chaired.

Elliot’s passion for and expertise in Yiddish have enriched the University of
Michigan. He facilitates a weekly Yiddish conversational group and has taught
Yiddish at the University of Michigan, Florida Atlantic University, and the
University of Kentucky. Jeffrey Veidlinger, Director of the Frankel Center for
Judaic Studies, notes especially that “Elliot has also been an important member
of the Yiddish community here at Michigan, contributing to our global
reputation as a leading center of Yiddish studies.”

While he will be retiring from UM, Elliot plans to continue to be active in AJL
and ALA and attend their meetings and conferences.

Elliot’s last day of work will be December 21st.  Please join his colleagues in
wishing him a happy retirement.

I am writing on behalf of Michlean Amir.
As many of you know Michlean and her husband were injured in a car accident in
June. Since  she does not have a computer in rehab,I am acting as her sofer(et).
Michlean was very disappointed when she realized that, not only she will miss
her friends  and the presentations at the conference in Boston, but, also, she
will not present the paper on Israeli literature. This topic is close to her
heart and to mine as well. I was looking forward to listing to her presentation
because her presentations in the past were excellent.
Michlean thank to all her friends and colleagues for their well wishes. She
hopes to be home soon.
I wish her Refuah shleyma and hope that she will preset the paper next year in
LA.

Dear Colleagues,
I want to share with all of you that I am retiring as librarian at Yavneh
Academy in Paramus, NJ as of the end of this school year.  I have been here for
22 years and worked in the field for over 35 years.  This decision is totally
my choice, and I am excited to plan the next part of my life which will include
taking classes, volunteer work, learning, more family and grandchildren time,
and AJL.
Sadly, the school is not replacing me with a professional. The technology
department will be absorbing the library space and program, although it has
become quite clear that it will not be continuing in anywhere near a similar
way.  It saddens me that our excellent, current, and expansive collection of
Judaica and general studies will probably fade away.  Many teachers have
approached me to express their disappointment in the school's decision.  As
seems to be in many cases, I don't think the administration realizes how
important the role of the library is in our educational process.
Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend the conference in Boston since
school ends on June 20.  It is important to me to finish my job and leave in
the right way.
Thank you all for your help over the years, your encouragement and ideas, and
your ongoing support.  I look forward to continuing to work with AJL and all of
you, a very special group of colleagues and friends.

The Fanny Goldstein Merit Award Committee of the Association of Jewish
Libraries (AJL) is delighted to announce that Heidi Rabinowitz Estrin is the
winner of the 2016 Fanny Goldstein Merit Award [link to
http://jewishlibraries.org/content.php?page=Fanny_Goldstein_Merit_Award]. The
Fanny Goldstein Merit Award, named for the librarian, social activist and
founder of National Jewish Book Month, is bestowed in recognition of loyal and
ongoing contributions to the Association and to the profession of Jewish
librarianship.

Born on May 15, 1895 [some sources say 1888], Fanny Goldstein devoted her
life to books and community. She was the first female Judaica librarian and the
first woman to direct a branch library in Massachusetts, where she was head of
Boston's West End Branch for many years. A prominent figure in the Boston
Jewish community, she is best known as the founder of Jewish Book Week, which
began when Goldstein organized a display of Jewish books at the Boston Public
Library in 1925.

Heidi Rabinowitz Estrin has served AJL and the profession of Judaica
librarianship in numerous capacities and with great distinction for many years.
Heidi was President of the Association of Jewish Libraries (2012-2014) in a
tenure distinguished by inclusivity, strength, and candor. Heidi was the
chairperson of the Public Relations Committee (2005-2010) and the Sydney Taylor
Book Award Committee (2004-2006). In addition, she serves on the AJL Strategic
Planning Committee.

Heidi has taken the lead in increasing the visibility of AJL. Heidi
oversaw the recording and editing of podcasts of AJL conference sessions and
posted them online. She regularly posts photographs, notifications, and
announcements about AJL on Facebook and other social media and monitors them to
maintain an active engagement with the AJL and Jewish bibliophile communities.
Recently, Heidi has regularly maintained the AJL website and has served as the
go-to person for website changes at www.jewishlibraries.org.

Heidi has been instrumental in promoting Jewish literature. She has
interviewed numerous authors on her Book of Life: a Podcast about Jewish People
and the Books We Read [link to: www.bookoflifepodcast.com] and carefully edited
those interviews into lively listening for lovers of Jewish books everywhere.
Having just celebrated its tenth year, these extraordinary podcasts are notable
for their thoughtful engagement with Jewish texts and their authors. Heidi
also spearheaded AJL Reads [link to:
http://jewishlibraries.org/content.php?page=AJL_Reads], a call-in book club for
discussion among members around a given book.

And in addition to all of her AJL activities, Heidi works as the Library
Director and Media Specialist at Congregation B’nai Israel in Boca Raton,
Florida. Heidi also has been the long-term president of the South Florida

Dear Friends,

As many of you may have already heard, I will be retiring from my position as
Dean of Libraries at Yeshiva University at the end of this academic year.

My experience at Yeshiva has been an extremely rewarding professional journey;
one from which I derived a great deal of personal satisfaction. Along with a
wonderful group of librarians and support personnel, I had the opportunity to
move the YU libraries forward and to provide the student and faculty community
with the best that we could offer. I have had the pleasure of working with
many of you at AJL in various capacities and I expect I will continue to be
involved in the years to come.

A committee has been formed to search for my replacement.

Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the AJL Awards Committee, I am pleased to announce that Joy
Kingsolver is the 2015 winner of the Fanny Goldstein Merit Award. A
justification for Joy’s award is presented below. Please join the Committee in
congratulating Joy!

All my best,

Aaron T.

Justification for the Nomination of Joy Kingsolver as the 2015 Fanny Goldstein
Merit Award Recipient

The Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) Awards Committee is delighted to
award the Fannie Goldstein Merit Award to Joy Kingsolver, the Association’s
longtime archivist and parliamentarian. As archivist, Joy has carefully
assembled and organized the crucial documents of the Association’s history,
including minutes of meetings, photographs, conference papers, and ensured
their safekeeping for posterity. As parliamentarian at numerous AJL meetings,
she has displayed her expertise in the rules of order and guided participants
on proper procedures to ensure that the appropriate rules are followed fairly
and that multiple voices are heard. Joy has also played a similar role in the
many Board and Council debates and votes that have taken place via e-mail.

Words like “ensure” and “make sure” are crucial in understanding the importance
of Joy’s contributions. All too often, those who work to allow others to shine
are overlooked. Joy has performed her challenging roles with her
characteristic understatement, modesty, professionalism, and grace. In this
the year of AJL’s Jubilee conference, the AJL Awards Committee feels that it is
especially fitting to honor a member whose work helps us better understand our
own history as Hebraica and Judaica archivists and librarians, keepers of the
Jewish book and of Jewish papers, and helps provide access to that history for
future generations of librarians and scholars. The world of AJL and our
profession more broadly will be better understood thanks in no small measure to
the tireless efforts of Joy Kingsolver.

Joy, we thank you for your work and we honor your achievements!

Respectfully submitted,

The AJL Awards Committee

Aaron Taub, Chairperson

Joan Biella, Member

Fred Isaac, Member

Amalia Warshenbrot, Member

[ha-Safran] Online class in picture book writing

2014-08-15 Thread Susan Dubin
Dear Safranim,
One of the speakers from the panel on the future of Jewish Children’s
literature at the Las Vegas Conference will be offering an online course in
picture book writing this fall. Here is her information about the class:

Learning to create or revise children’s picture books can be a magical process
full of personal and professional transformations that engage hearts, smarts,
and humor. Starting this September 8th, join Dr. Mira Reisberg and Barbara
Bottner at the Children’s Book Academy as they lead very beginning to
multi-published students beginning with commercial and/or literary concepts
through revisions to submissions and contracts.

Both Mira and Barbara are bestselling children’s book creators and
award-winning passionate teachers whose former students have become major
award-winning bestselling authors themselves. Barbara is the author of over 40
children’s books including Bootsie Barker Bites. Her most recent book is one of
Amazon’s best books for August. In addition to being a former university
professor/kid lit specialist, Mira is also a former children’s literary agent,
enabling her to help in uniquely powerful ways. In fact, the Craft and Business
of Writing Children’s Picture Books has been described as the equivalent of 20
conferences and has helped MANY authors get contract offers and/or their dream
agent.
In 5 plus time-flexible weeks, you will be mentored with weekly critiques,
optional small critique groups, tons of interaction and support and over 25
lessons in a fun-filled community with additional access and bonuses. If now
feels like the time for you to go for it, click here http://bit.ly/cbwpb to
find out more or register. Or you can email Mira directly at
m...@childrensbookacademy.com with questions.

Hope this is helpful to you!

Las Vegas Program Is Not A Gamble
The program for the 2014 AJL Conference is shaping up to be amazing! Two
special features this year will be manuscript evaluations by a literary agent
and a writing workshop by Groner-Wikler Scholarship winner Barbara Krasner.
Both of these programs are available for an extra fee as listed on the

We have just added another poetry reading to our TED talks. This one will be by
Aaron Taub who will be sharing some of his poetry. M.E. Silverman will also
read his poetry. Two other TED talks will explore folktales. In addition,
Shuli Berger will speak about her parent’s childhood Yiddish books. Schelley
Dardashti will share information about a Medieval Spanish Archive.
We will have two plenary sessions this year—Lisa Hansel will speak on
“Bringing Research to Life: The Crucial Role of Librarians in Meeting—and
Exceeding—the Common Core Standards,” and Emile Schrijver will speak about
“Between Being-Wise and Not-Knowing-What-To-Ask: Jewish Librarianship and

To: hasafran@lists.service.ohio-state.edu
Subject: [ha-Safran] Sydney Taylor Book Award Winners

Dear Friends:

It is my pleasure to announce that Laurel Snyder and Catia Chien, author and
illustrator of The Longest Night: A Passover Story, Patricia Polacco author
and illustrator of The Blessing Cup, and Neal Bascomb, author of The Nazi
Hunters: How a Team of Spies and Survivors Captured the World’s Most Notorious
Nazi, are the 2014 winners of the Sydney Taylor Book Award.

The Sydney Taylor Book Award honors new books for children and teens that
exemplify the highest literary standards while authentically portraying the
Jewish experience. The award memorializes Sydney Taylor, author of the classic
All-of-a-Kind Family series. The winners will receive their awards at the
Association of Jewish Libraries Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada this June.

Snyder and Chien will receive the 2014 gold medal in the Sydney Taylor Book
Award’s Younger Readers category for The Longest Night: A Passover Story,
published by Schwartz Wade, an imprint of Random House Children’s Books.
Written in gentle verse, the tumultuous days leading up to the Jews flight from
Egypt are described from the perspective of an unnamed slave girl in this
beautifully illustrated story. It provides a unique introduction to the
Passover holiday for young readers in an honest, but age-appropriate way.
Committee member Charna Gross notes: “We all know about our history as slaves
in Egypt, the ten plagues, the Exodus, and the splitting of the Red Sea. But in
Snyder’s retelling, accompanied by Chien’s dream-like illustrations, we are
somehow transported to the rusty red banks of the Nile, witnessing each plague.
This book is a marvel.”

The award in the Older Readers category will be presented to Patricia Polacco
for The Blessing Cup, a Paula Wiseman Book, published by Simon Schuster
Books for Young Readers, an imprint of Simon Schuster. In this prequel to The
Keeping Quilt, Polacco shares the story of another treasured family heirloom.
The miraculous journey of the remaining teacup from a china tea set,
deliberately left behind when her Jewish ancestors were forced to leave Czarist
Russia, from the shtetl to America will strike an emotional chord with readers.
“I was moved to tears reading this book. The gorgeous illustrations and
heartfelt story remind readers of the importance of sharing from generation to
generation our own family histories and the incredible sacrifices made by our
ancestors to start new lives in America,” said committee chair, Aimee Lurie. In
1988, The Keeping Quilt was the Sydney Taylor Book Award Winner for Younger
Readers.

Neal Bascomb will receive the 2014 gold medal in the Sydney Taylor Book Award’s
Teen Readers category for The Nazi Hunters: How a Team of Spies and Survivors
Captured the World’s Most Notorious Nazi published by Arthur A. Levine Books,
an imprint of Scholastic. A stunning account of the spy mission to capture
Adolf Eichmann by an elite team of Israeli spies is dramatically brought to
life by Neal Bascomb. According to committee member Barbara Krasner, It is
obvious that he spent decades conducting meticulous research on several
continents to produce this winning and chilling narrative. Bascomb has set a
new nonfiction gold standard for young readers.”

Six Sydney Taylor Honor Books were named for 2014. For younger readers, two
Honor Books were selected, both published by Kar-Ben a division of Lerner
Publishing Group: Stones for Grandpa by Renee Londoner with illustrations by
Martha Avillés and Rifka Takes a Bow by Betty Rosenberg Perlov with
illustrations by Cosei Kawa. The Boy on the Wooden Box: How the Impossible
Became Possible...on Schindler’s List by Leon Leyson with Marilyn J. Harran and
Elisabeth B. Leyson (Atheneum Books for Young Readers, an imprint of Simon
Schuster Children’s Publishing Division) and Dear Canada: Pieces of the Past:
The Holocaust Diary of Rose Rabinowitz, Winnipeg, Manitoba, 1948 by Carol Matas
(Scholastic Canada) garnered recognition as an Honor Books for Older Readers.
For Teen Readers, the honor goes to Dancing in the Dark by Robyn Bavati (Flux,
an imprint of Llewellyn Worldwide) and The War Within These Walls by Aline Sax
with illustrations by Caryl Strzelecki and translated by Laura Watkinson
(Eerdmans Books for Young Readers).

In addition to the medal-winners, the Award Committee designated thirteen
Notable Books of Jewish Content for 2014. Attached is a list of all of the
winners, including the notables. More information about the Sydney Taylor Book
Award can be found at www.SydneyTaylorBookAward.org

Some types of employment will disappear (public and school libraries seem most
endangered). Highly specialized libraries will remain. Note that the skill
set will evolve. While subject knowledge and good language skills will remain
important, librarians are increasingly being the ones who set up and maintain
databases and other online resources. If someone was asking me how to become a
librarian, I'ld suggest a B.A. in the subject they want to specialize in, minor
in related subjects, multiple foreign languages preferably from different
language families, and a second major in IT.

Generalists with English majors seeking work in school and public libraries
probably will have trouble finding employment. Computer savy polyglots with
useful majors in law, business and the sciences will still find jobs. Printed
books seem to be on their way out, just as scrolls and tablets (the original
ones, that you had to bake to make them fixed) disappeared without affecting
librarianship (though I am sure there are people who thought the rise of
printing and use of vernacular languages was the doom of librarianship).

recommend our profession as one with a good future. What do others think? (I
am speaking of librarianship in general, not Judaica librarianship).

Hi Ben,

1. We are using the Common Core Standards and NETS-S at the Oakland Hebrew Day
School library. The standards for research, reading, and research and opinion
writing inform the library curriculum.

2. I think the standards are an excellent tool for developing integrated
lessons with content area teachers in general and Judaic studies. The lessons
I do that address standards these teachers are trying to meet helps them, and
the collaboration with these teachers benefits the library.

Hope that helps.

Chelm stories are a huge hit with my students, too!

In addition, we love the books that Rose Myers refers to in her message, in
which readers/listeners can guess the solution before it's revealed. Actually,
making predictions is something we often do before and while reading many
different texts. I guide the students in making predictions based on the title
and cover of a book, and then at appropriate places in the middle of a story I
pause and ask what might happen next. After frequently doing this together, the
students develop the habit of making predictions on their own, and it's a great
way for a reader/listener to engage with a text and actively think about what's
happening.

I created a chart (see attached) identifying Judaic books that I have
successfully used with upper elementary students. Some of them are picture
books, while others are chapter books and anthologies. Many of the stories take
longer than 15 minutes to read and discuss, so if you can have longer library
periods that may be helpful.

Happy reading!

I have found this age group particularly enjoy Chelm stories. I had several 4th
grade classes that would want to hear the same stories over and over -- just
like younger grades. Once I overheard an older student telling a younger one
that he was really in for a treat because in 4th Grade they got to hear Chelm
stories! They love being read to and I think they miss the experience at that
age.

I would not assume that the 3rd-5th graders will no longer want to have
stories read to them. I am librarian at the Hebrew Day School of Ann Arbor, and
our 3rd-5th graders are still VERY enthusiastic about listening to and
discussing books that I read aloud. I share with them lots of picture books and
chapter books - historical fiction, folktales, midrashim, holiday tales and
more. There are many enriching and thought-provoking choices for this age
group! The students love to discuss predictions, debate characters' actions,
and explore lessons that can be learned. When we do other types of activities,
they often ask when they'll get to hear more books, so I try to balance their
desire to enjoy literature (and my desire to discuss it with them) with my need
to engage them in a variety of library tasks. Perhaps your upper elementary
students will be enthusiastic about listening to literature as well!

  Dear Safranim,

This is a wonderful achievement and Prof. Choueka deserves all the credit in
the world for developing and implementing the advanced computer programming
which makes these types of comparisons possible. It may be worth noting for
historical purposes that the use of digital technologies to search physically
dispersed genizah fragments and to compare them in order to identify matches
was pioneered at the Penn Libraries in partnership with the Taylor-Schechter
Genizah Unit at Cambridge University Library and with the Library of the Jewish
Theological Seminary in New York City.
See: http://sceti.library.upenn.edu/genizah/index.cfm /

Among the librarians who participated in this effort were our own Heidi Lerner
at Stanford University and Naomi Steinberger at the Library of the Jewish
Theological Seminary.. Note also that Heidi and Seth Jerchower, then at the
Penn Libraries, gave numerous presentations and published an article discussing
the MARC cataloging issues they solved in the course of the project. Their
article, which first appeared in Cataloging Classification Quarterly, Volume
42, Number 1, 2006, pages 21-39, can be read on-line via the Scholarly Commons
website at the University of Pennsylvania:

Dear Librarian,
My name is Dr. Baruch Falach and I own one of the largest research collections
in the world pertaining to Jewish Studies, the Land of Israel, and the Jewish
people. My collection is commercial and is available for purchase.
About my store:
My book store specializes in academic, research, and first edition books on
topics such as Judaism, Israel, Zionism, the Holocaust, the history of the
Jewish-Arab conflict, Hebrew literature, to name just a few. We have almost
80,000 titles, most of which are rare, important scholarly books, materials
published by religious schools, bibliophile books, and those published
personally or are out of print. The store has two main departments: the rare
book collection and the academic book department. The business was established
in 2004, based on one of the largest private collections in Israel – with
20,000 books. Since then we have bought dozens of libraries and collections.
We work with museums, private collectors, libraries, professors, and students.
We sell important collections of Jewish Studies, humanities, social studies,
law, and other books to academic libraries.
Among our customers are leading research institutes in Israel and the United
States.
Our main office is located in Israel in Moshav Havatzelet near Netanya.
Warehouses are located in Jerusalem and Netanya.
The store is not open to the general public, but visits may be arranged in
advance.
I will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

  NEWS FLASH!!!

AJL has created a Jewish Library Advocacy Kit to assist libraries as they
educate their communities about the value of their services. The kit includes
materials that can simply be handed to administrators, as well as documents to
be adapted and recrafted for each library's individual situation.

Find the Jewish Library Advocacy Kit on the AJL website at
www.jewishlibraries.org in the Resources section. It is a downloadable PDF
document. Feel free to use the ideas and information when creating advocacy
documents of your own, tailored to your individual situation.

The pdf may also be found here:

We welcome feedback and suggestions for improvement!

Re: [ha-Safran] conferences

2013-02-14 Thread Susan Dubin
Very well said, Elliot. Those are all the reasons a joint conference would be
difficult. For 2014, I met with ALA chairs to explore a possible joint
conference. They were very willing to accommodate us by offering us space for
AJL meetings within their conference. We looked at joining them on Sunday,
having AJL business meetings on Monday, and then extending the AJL conference
for our own special sessions until Wednesday. They said our attendees could
have free passes to exhibits and a reduced registration for ALA. The problem
was that they could not work out the Kashrut with their hotels for the days we
overlapped. Making our own hotel arrangements would have necessitated also
making transportation available to get to the ALA venues --- not inexpensive.
So, we opted for preceding their convention as we have done in the past.(We end
on Wednesday and they start on Friday) The kashrut issue may be something local
to Las Vegas, so I do recommend looking into trying to combine the programs
again in other places.

Subject: Re: [ha-Safran] conferences

First, I apologize for the length of my message, but I think this is a rather
complicated issue for a variety of reasons.

FWIW, even though I am enumerating several obstacles below as to why AJL and
ALA Annual Conferences cannot really overlap except perhaps for a day--as we
have done at some of our joint programs since 1995--I am actually very much in
favor of finding a way to make a convergence of the two conferences work or at
least try it. That said, I want to state a few reasons why this is a difficult
concept to put into practice.

My understanding is that the primary reason AJL has been unable to piggyback
(sorry for the treyf allusion) on ALA Annual Conference is that it is still
very important to enough attendees of AJL Annual Conference to be able to have
most of our meals during conference together, and that in order to accommodate
all types of dietary requirements, these be strictly kosher meals. Apparently,
ALA cannot guarantee such an arrangement. And, even if ALA could do so, the
registration fees for the AJL portion of the conference or pre-conference would
still have to be (much) higher than what ALA conference registration is.
Remember, ALA registration doesn't include any meals. It is mainly the meals
that make AJL registration so expensive.

Another thing that might make it complicated to do AJL Annual simultaneously
with ALA Annual is that we have highly specialized sessions; indeed ALA does,
as well, but they are much broader in overall scope. With hundreds of programs
going on at the exact same time, it is already difficult to select which ones
to to attend. With these taking place sometimes quite a distance apart (unlike
AJL, which is in one hotel), it can be problematic getting from one to another
Indeed, even at AJL Annual with considerably fewer sessions, there are often
simultaneous programs that are of interest, which makes it difficult to decide
which ones to go to. If we add the many hundreds of ALA programs into the mix,
it may dilute attendance even further at the AJL-specific sessions.

Yet another consideration: most ALA Annual attendees tend to be there from
Friday-Monday. AJL has traditionally been held Sunday-Wednesday. Friday and
Sunday would be the strongest possible days for concurrent AJL and ALA (esp.
joint) programming. And, many ALA attendees don't even stay through Monday.
For example, at ALA Annual in Anaheim last June, we had a really fine joint
program co-sponsored by AJL, ALA EMIERT JIC (Jewish Information Committee),
ATLA (American Theological Library Association), ASCLA (Association of
Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies), and the Catholic Library
Association. It was called Virtual Faiths: Cooperative Digitization Projects
http://ala12.scheduler.ala.org/node/931 and included a speaker representing AJL
and the JIC, Rebecca Jefferson of the University of Florida. Even given its
sparse attendance of maybe 30 people, I believe I saw only one other AJL
(Pasadena) Conference Attendee at this special program. And last year, the two
conferences were held one right after the other, only a couple of local
freeways apart.

And the fact that Saturday is a prime day for ALA Annual Conference
automatically prevents a number of AJL attendees from taking part in any of the
events on that day for obvious religious considerations. They would have to
arrive early on Friday, late on Saturday night, or on Sunday to be able to
attend sessions on Friday and Sunday.

As Shoshanah correctly points out below, since 1995 we have had a number of
joint programs with ALA's JIC (and other groups). Even when AJL and ALA met in
the same city (and even at a hotel used by both associations; ALA usually needs
all the

I just updated the list of software for small libraries. it is on the web site

Re: [ha-Safran] Recommendations for adult congreg-wide read withchildren's book tie-in

2012-05-25 Thread Susan Dubin
Dear Hillary,
Why not do something on the Civil War? For children, Yankee at the Seder was a
wonderful book with lots to talk about. For adults, March by Geraldine Brooks
was outstanding. So was The War Within for young adults/middle grade readers. A
nonfiction adult book is American Jewry and the Civil War or Lincoln and the
Jews. A personal favorite for adults was All Other Nights by Dara Horn.

Subject: [ha-Safran] Recommendations for adult congreg-wide read withchildren's
book tie-in

All,

I am hoping that someone amongst you will be able to provide book
recommendations and suggestions for the following:

I am trying to plan a synagogue wide read for my congregation and I know
that it is usually only the adults and, perhaps, young adults who are
encouraged to participate in such events. But I would like to select a book
for the adults and then also select a children's book relating to the same
theme(s) or, at least, having something in common with the adult selection.
That way, when I plan events connected to the book, they will be of interest to
everyone.

If anyone can recommend an adult and children's book that would go well
together, I would greatly appreciate it. Neither book needs to have been
recently published.

Thank you in advance,
Hillary Finkel

  Sendak Sendoff
by Victor Dubin

Author and illustrator Maurice Sendak died this
week. Like many of you, I must have read his words and marlveled at his
illustrations thousands of times in my life. He gifted us with Pierre (A
Cautionary Tale), Chicken Soup With Rice, In The Night Kitchen, most famously
Where The Wild Things Are, and many others. His work has the power to transport
us, to open our minds, and speak to our souls. I hope that the music we played
to honor him helps to do the same.

[ha-Safran] Silent Auction -- Call for Your Talents

2012-02-29 Thread Susan Dubin
Calling all creative librarians:

We will hold our 2nd annual silent auction at the Convention this year. We have
some great items so far, BUT we need more! Please donate something special for
our auction or ask people you know. We are looking for interesting items, but
not books unless they are collector’s items since we will be selling books of
authors who are coming. We don’t want to conflict with their sales. Some
ideas---
handmade items like quilts, tablecloths, baby items, jewelry, artwork. Basket
of goodies like popcorn, dvd, or movie passes. Services like computer repair,
photos, etc. or

Please send items for the auction to:
Sinai Temple Blumenthal Library

Subject: Re: [ha-Safran] Question about posting our catalogue online

We started to play around with ours this Sunday. We are going to go with
Library Thing. http://www.librarything.com/. The catalog was originally
cataloged in ProCite 5. They use the Weine Classification System. From ProCite,
you can export a file into a .txt document and then upload it into Library
Thing. It costs $25 to add more than 200 records. You pay the fee only once for
the whole life of the library. It has the Dewey and Library of Congress
Classification numbers already in Library Thing. This is really nice for a
synagogue library that hasn't placed classification numbers on the books yet.

I discovered a couple problems with using the website. It does not always
recognize all of the records that are uploaded. This could be because there is
a duplicate record, because the edition is out of print and you have a
different ISBN number on the book, the book is extremely rare and not in
Library of Congress or amazon.com, or a previous record in Library Thing had
too many mistakes. I found a record had previously been entered into Library
Thing with the first name and last name reversed, as well as a record with just
a last name. So I had to select those to add to the catalog by hand and correct
the incorrect records. After uploaded the list, I checked all of the records in
Library Thing with those in my files that I uploaded to make all of the
corrections needed and add the additional copies that we had to the Library
Thing catalog when we had more than one copy of the book. So far we have only
uploaded 174 books, which is our Juvenile Fiction section. We have nearly 4000
books. You can see how this has turned out at
  http://www.librarything.com/catalog/OakParkTemple.

Once we have finished we can link to this from the Synagogue's website
and announce it in the newsletter. Hopefully that will bring in more attention
from the members and more books will be checked out.

Our library is preparing to post our small catalogue on our synagogue
website. For those of you that have done this, what are the issues you think
we need to consider before posting?

Thanks in advance for your help
