I use a different approach entirely because I like how it looks in the
reports that I do for my clients and for myself.
I use 10 underlines in a row for a name. In using this to send reports
to family members, I find they fill in the blanks easier and faster than
seeing 'Unknown in the
enter them as unlinked. If you find the proof later, then link them

I know I can put the person and his family in as an unlinked person,
but, because of the given names used, there is a strong possibility
It is NOT pendantic at all.I choose to be
historically/genealogically correct and record EXACTLY how each instance
of the name appears in that person's life with the first available
document from the birth being the first/preferred name.
For example - this is my 3rd great grandfather
I have a much more standardized approach to the names. I would approach
it very simplistically
I record EXACTLY what is on the documents. If the birth document stated
the surname is PETER, then I would record it as that. If a later
document for the same person shows PETERS, then I would
And I disagreeI believe you should always use the FIRST logical

I am entering the records for a town in Sicily and have over 48,000 in
my file. I check to see first if there is a relationship to someone who
Jenny,
I could be because I started my file originally in 1994 in FTM and
imported it into Legacy. Legacy did not see both names as the surname
and I had to hyphenate them to make it work properly.

Ruth,
Do all of the Sconza Testa's appear in the index as Sconza Testa for a
surname or are they under Testa for the surname? It appears from the
reports you show that it is NOT recognizing the first part of the
surname and only recognizing the Testa.which would mean that
