I am now at home running knoppix (thank you Klaus!), following the steps
described in one of the comments to the post I mentioned. These steps
involve
dd if=/dev/hda3 of=/mnt/hda5/hda3.img
losetup /dev/loop0 /mnt/hda5/hda3.img
reiserfsck --rebuild-tree -S -l /mnt/hda5/recovery.log
