Am 08.03.2018 um 11:56 schrieb Emile Lunardon: How could I let the Miktex update happen? It's very simple, bundle3 displayed a window... OK, so you didn't update MiKTeX manually. I don't know if Miktex was really broken, but LyX was no more able to launch the compilation of the documents. Then, as I wrote you, a Miktex update failed and it is only later that on the Miktex console I have seen that there was proposed a list of packages to be installed with one package inside. After the installation of this package LyX (2.2.3 and 2.3) were both able to compile again documents. Presently all seems to work fine. OK, then the problem I detected yesterday seem to exist since Monday on some mirror servers (I'll check right now if this is now fixed and report back). MiKTeX must be updated to be able to work with it, but the update failed because the main package containing the info of all other MiKTeX packages appeared recently truncated on the MiKTeX mirror servers. Since you had a state of MiKTeX with the new MiKTeX console, it means that the update was partially successful. When I launch in this state the MiKTeX console manually and force another update run, I get MiKTeX fixed. And this is what you did too. So my analysis is that the LyX installer could force the update to the MiKTeX console but the packages and, more important, the links to the packages could not be updated by the MiKTeX console because of the truncated package info. In my opinion you should concentrate on the reason of the presence in bundle3 of this dialog window with only an "OK button" to click as possible answer as we should be in position to decline the proposition to update Miktex In this case we must force an update. You observed what happens if this is not performed or incomplete - MiKTeX can be broken. The MiKTeX package handling changed and the different programs to install and maintain packages do no longer exist. They were replaced by the MiKTeX Console. Therefore we must find a way that users of older MiKTeX get the console because if they do this by themselves (e.g. by installing a new package or in same cases by reconfiguring LyX) a bug in MiKTeX can cause LaTeX to break completely. many thanks for your help with testing and feedback Uwe

How could you decide to let the update run on your own? I realize now that you installed LyX 2.3.0 the first time using version 1 of the LyX installer. This can explain the problems you saw. I tested this now but cannot reproduce. Could you please maybe do me the favor and - uninstall LyX and MiKTeX _completely_ - reinstall LyX using the 2.3.0 RC1/ installer (if you still have it on your PC) - install LyX 2.3.0 over it using the version 3 installer. I finally manage later to recover a working Miktex via the installation of a new package. This what i also don't understand. if MiKTeX is broken, you can try whatever you want. Updates cannot be installed and a package installation doesn't repair MiKTeX. There must have happened something else. Because when a package update succeeds and you can use LyX afterwards, then it could only happen that the package file name database was incomplete. However, I cannot reproduce this. Meanwhile MiKTeX released 3 important bugfixes to its package handling system. I hope that they are available tomorrow for all users. regards Uwe

I managed to have a successfull installation with the installer version of LyX2.3, keeping the anti-virus «Windows Defender» active. So the problem is well linked to the bundle and its interaction with Miktex 2.9. 2018-03-01 17:15 GMT+01:00 Scott Kostyshak: > On Thu, Mar 01, 2018 at 10:26:20AM +, Emile Lunardon wrote: > > I tried again to install LyX2.3 on my PC running on WINDOWS 8.1. I always use the bundle version of LyX for my installations (...LyX2.2.2, LyX2.2.3, LyX2.3 RC1, LyX2.3RC2, LyX2.3) together with a local version of Miktex and it is the first time I have this kind of problem. 2018-03-01 17:15 GMT+01:00 Scott Kostyshak: > On Thu, Mar 01, 2018 at 10:26:20AM +, Emile Lunardon wrote: > > I tried again to install LyX2.3 on my PC running on WINDOWS 8.1. Am 01.03.2018 um 17:15 schrieb Scott Kostyshak: CONCLUSION The installation of LyX2.3 seems to corrupt the Miktex configuration. This is not due to an interaction with the anti-virus (disabled). Hopefully an upgrade of Miktex (if there is a new package to install) repairs Miktex 2.9 and allows LyX to work again. This sounds not good. The problematic is this: MiKTeX released a new version that changes the whole package handling. There are now 3 cases: A: if you have MiKTeX already installed and have not yet updated MiKTeX, LyX will fail to setup MiKTeX because it uses the new package handling infrastructure. B: if you have MiKTeX already installed and run the update wizard of MiKTeX once, LyX will fail too because two update steps of MikTeX are necessary: first to update the update wizard and second one to use it to update MiKTeX's main files. C: you already run MikTeX's update wizard at least once before using the LyX installer or you install MiKTeX together with LyX. Then LyX will perform the second update run for you and LyX is already prepared for MikTeX's new package handling. I am still thinking about a clever solution. Maybe I should change the installer so that it runs the MiKTeX update twice if necessary. I tend to do this but this requires time for testing I don't have right now. If you don't like to wait, uninstall MiKTeX and use the bundle installer of LyX 2.3.0 to install MiKTeX right before LyX. Any suggesting for a proper solution is welcome. Scott, I tend to delay the public announce for LyX on Windows for some days. regards Uwe

Thanks for your help in trying to figure out what's going on, Emile. Reading your previous message, you are using the bundle to install, right? Do you have the same problem if you use the installer? I'm not so surprised that the bundle could mess something up if you already have a MikTeX installation. I tried again to install LyX2.3 on my PC running on WINDOWS 8.1. This time as you have suggested, I have disabled the virus scanner (windows defender) and installed only for the current user. The result is identical to the first installation attempt : neither LyX2.3 nor LyX2.2.3 document compilation works due to problem with Miktex 2.9 (wrong termination of pdflalex, missing classes, spaces in directory paths). Then I have performed a package maintenance of Miktex (one new package downloaded) and I have reconfigured both LyX2.3 and LyX2.2.3. RESULT : both LyX versions manage to compile documents now. CONCLUSION The installation of LyX2.3 seems to corrupt the Miktex configuration. This is not due to an interaction with the anti-virus (disabled). Re: 2.3.0 installer test on Windows 10
Scott and Jose, Installing texlive-babel-spanish fixed the problem. The user guide now compiles perfectly under Fedora 27. Jose: I personally don't require any Babel packages; this just came up during testing. So no need to change the spec file, at least not for me. Thanks! Eric Barkan Earlier Message: I've installed and run the latest 2.3.0 installer from the FTP site on Windows 10. I've done 2 installations, both against TexLive 2017: 1. Windows 10 running natively on a new Dell laptop with Kaby Lake Xeon. 2. Windows 10 under Virtual box on a Fedora 27 host. No problems or errors at all, either during installation, lyx program startup, or compiling the User Guide. The generated User Guide PDF looks OK as far as I can tell. Separately, FYI: I have also built and tested the 2.3.0 tarball under Fedora 27/Texlive with QT 5.9.4. It builds and runs without error on my own documents. However, when compiling the User Guide, it throws two errors: 1. "Illegal parameter number in definition of \captionsspanish" with the Description: } You meant to type ## instead of #, right? Or maybe a } was forgotten somewhere earlier, and things are all screwed up? I'm going to assume that you meant ##. and: 2. "Package babel Error: You haven't defined the language spanish yet." with the Description: \selectlanguage{spanish} % Your command will be ignored, type to proceed These errors appear to be triggered in Section 3.9.2 on the line: "Les incises - même si tout le monde ne les aime pas – sont très utiles." Yes, that's French, not Spanish. After clicking "Show Output Anyway" the PDF compiles without further error and the affected lines in Section 3.9.2 appear normal. Am I missing some package from Texlive? Hope this helps. In any case, thanks to you all for your hard work on this release! Eric Barkan
