very recent svn versions of numpy/mpl/ipython.
I hadn't updated in a while (weeks) prior to the last update, so I am
not exactly sure when the bug appeared.

coexist beautifully, except for a few small
exceptions. 'load' is one. (There are others I have run across as
well).
I think mpl should play nice even for folks like me who occasionally
like to abandon separate namespaces.
