[MCN-L] cross-platform apps?

2010-06-15 Thread Glen Barnes
Hi John,

I think you will find more and more tools will come out that support cross
platform apps. There are several reasons why there are not a huge number of
them to date:

- Market penetration: Although other smart phones (apart from the iPhone) have
significant market share people do not use apps on them. You will find that
iPhone users use more apps, browse the web more and are more willing to
download extra content at this point. As other App Stores and devices become
more usable then I see this changing.

- Lack of Tools for Other Platforms: The iPhone has the most comprehensive set
of tools to develop on - From the coding environment to the distribution via
the App Store. It is just a lot easier to get apps out on the iPhone platform.

- Cost: Developing for several platforms costs a lot of money so do you support
90% of the people who will be downloading for 20% of the cost of supporting
100% of the people? As a case in point a company I know developed an iPhone app
and Java app (for feature phones). The cost of developing the Java version was
10x the iPhone version and nobody downloaded. The iPhone app is quite
successful and continues to sell well (not in the cultural sector but for
travel).

- Design considerations: Each platform is different and you need to design the
UI for each platform otherwise things just don't work correctly for the user.
Each platform has different standards of swiping, button placements, etc. and
deploying the same UI across platforms just makes the whole experience a bit
lame for the user.

We will be developing our tools to work across multiple platforms (our tour
builder is web based so it is _just_ a case of developing a front end app for
each platform). At the moment I see the platforms of choice are iOS (iPhone,
iPad, Ipod Touch), Android and Windows Phone 7.

Hope that gives you a little background on some of the issues. Does anyone have
anything else they see as issues?

Thanks,
Glen

I see some iPhone apps being developed by museums, including mine. Don't
recall seeing any announcements of cross-platform apps by museums. With the
growth of Android phones I am wondering if anybody has done or plans to do
cross-platform apps. And if not, why not.

We switched to shopify.com last year and I'm pretty happy with it. Very,
very nice admin features, API, and good functionality. Doesn't integrate
with our POS system but it's light years better than the old system that
did, so it's worth the extra admin overhead of syncing stock.

As a side note: If you want e-commerce, accounting and POS to work together
with minimal effort check out VendHQ.com for SaaS POS and Xero.com for
accounting. Both are kiwi based companies making waves internationally.

Vend and Shopify work well together and so do Vend and Xero and Xero and

[MCN-L] Forwarding e-blasts (Ari Davidow)

2012-02-08 Thread Glen Barnes
Hi Ari,

What mailing list software are you using? If you use something like Mail Chimp
you can add forward tags to the mailing:

http://kb.mailchimp.com/article/how-can-i-add-a-forward-to-a-friend-link/

If you have a few big donors you can also get the list of friends off them and
customise the mail blast so it looks a lot more personalised which can look
professional.

Thanks,
Glen

PS: I highly recommend MailChimp - Free for small lists and really affordable
for bigger lists and to remove the branding. The web based email builder is
really easy to use as well.

We have just been through our annual trauma of getting an invite out to our
annual luncheon. The problem lies with message forwarding. Here are some
 truisms:

 1. If you send the information in a JPEG, no matter what happens (assuming
that the image isn't filtered out), people can read it, and it will look as
you intended. They won't be able to cut and paste, they won't be able to
add it to their calendars, etc., but they can read and print it (assuming
that they aren't using a mobile device that has enough bandwidth and
doesn't have too small a screen).

 2. If you point people to the forward to a friend button (which people
seem to miss, anyway), they discover that they are limited to 3 or 5
forwards/hour--an alleged anti-spam setting (I say alleged because many
more sends could be allowed per hour to meet human needs and still avoid
 worries of spam)

 3. If you encourage people to forward using their regular email client, it
may get mangled--and is especially likely to get mangled on forwards of
 that forwarded email.

As opposed to these options, we have just a few big donors who want to
forward the e-vite to just a few dozen of their best friends, something
 that cannot be usefully accommodated.

So, we have gone with option (3), encouraging people to include something
in their forwarding notes that to send this on, use the tell a friend'
link at the bottom of this email so that you are forwarding a fresh copy of
the message. We'll see what happens.

How do other people handle this?

Putting in forward tags isn't the problem! The problem is HOW MANY
forwards a person can make before anti-spam measures take over, and the
knowledge that there are legitimate cases where someone wants to forward to
10s of people, where most forward tools limit one to 3-5/hour (or worse).

To how many people can you forward a MailChimp message before you run into
 that limit?

Not sure. Maybe an email to their support email would work? But if MailChimp
won't support that particular use case then I guess the point is moot.

If it is in the 10s, then MailChimp may be a good choice for
this purpose (albeit, for us, not sufficiently sophisticated to support
 complex campaigns--but that's another discussion).

I'm always of the opinion to simplify everything ;-)

Hope you find something that works.

[MCN-L] Suggestions for Web Analytics software besides Google Analytics

2010-04-15 Thread Glen Barnes

Hi Bilkis,

You can track the downloads pretty easily using the _trackEvent tag [1]:

_trackEvent(category, action, optional_label, optional_value)

The key here is not to manually add this to _every_ link you want to track. I
can't find the exact page[2] that you want to access now but basically on page
load you have a default piece of javascript that adds the correct Javascript to
each anchor tag. Here[3] is a script that does it using the old method of
generating 'fake' page views (the new way of using event tracking is the
recommended way).

Hope this helps.

Thanks

 Hi everyone,

We use WebTrends and Google Analytics (GA) for analysing our web
statistics at Museum of London. However, WebTrends has become
increasingly very expensive for us and we want to move away from it to a
new, preferably free, package and would appreciate all your
recommendations. I am aware of some of the software out there that has
been mentioned in previous emails, but I would like a recommendation of
one that you think is really good.

A couple of things that the software should do that GA doesn't:

 * Allow reanalysis of web log files
 * Allow analysis of visits to downloads

Any other comments or suggestions are welcome.

 Thanks.
 Bilkis.

[MCN-L] App stats

2012-10-26 Thread Glen Barnes
People just don't use their Android devices anywhere near as much as iOS users
so even though the installed base is bigger the usage is a lot lower. I would
hazard a guess that a lot of Android users don't even really know they have a
'smartphone' and have no idea how to use most of the functions. It reminds me
of the days of Symbian - The phones could do a _lot_ of things but the
population that actually anything other than make phone calls and store
contacts was tiny.

As Android starts to become a user friendly OS (which is slowly happening) we
might see an increase in usage. I are seeing that in other verticals where
Android usage is creeping up above 25%. Also let's not forget Windows 8 which
is due for launch next week. It could be 3rd time lucky for Microsoft.

I was looking for more actual user stats. I'm wanting a picture of what
devices are actually being used to access museum content and in what
 ratios.

And with the stats I've gather from colleagues it seems to be very
interesting that even though the Android platform is the top mobile
platform, it's the Apple devices that are dominating in actually access
 content.

[MCN-L] Different Copyrights / Different Image Resolutions

2014-03-14 Thread Glen Barnes
Hi Kate,

Speaking from an NZ perspective here. I've found that in NZ institutions
tend to limit access to higher quality images and have separate licensing
on these (rather than copyright). You are free to use the web published
version but if you want anything extra then you need to jump through hoops
to get a high res version, possibly pay for it and agree to restrictive
licensing terms. It is changing but only slowly.

Also in response to this comment:

There can be no valid copyright in images that are merely slavish
reproductions of two-dimensional works, no matter that some institutions
may continue to make such claims. So with respect to those slavish types
of images, questions about resolution and size are simply irrelevant from a
legal perspective -- and no CC license attached to any such image could be
valid.

Maybe in the US but in NZ organisations are claiming copyright over scanned
photos and other images. I don't think this has been tested in court. IANAL
so I don't know if they have valid claims or not.

Thanks,
Glen

[MCN-L] Cloud Computing (Cindy Mackey)

2014-06-23 Thread Glen Barnes
A few of my notes in answer to, and +1 to things raised in the responses:

If the cloud server goes down, you have no ability to fix it. You just
 have to wait.

Which is just the same as an onsite server. Amazon/etc. have teams of
people dedicated to just keeping the servers running and to deal with
security. Local IT person just can't compete with that. If you can find a
local IT company who are experts at supporting your services running on
cloud services then this is a much better proposition.

When your data is off-site with a third party you don't have control over
it. You will think you do though!

I think this is a really important thing to consider. You often don't 'have
control' over it if you host it yourself either. If you are help to ransom
by 'IT' then this can be just as bad. I think a good disaster recovery and
backup plan is essential. Consider things like Amazon Glacier for long term
back ups. Mutli-availablity zones and local backups. Also look for services
that let you recover from accidental deletions and can recover items.

Having multiple users accessing the same files at the same time can get
 tricky with off-site storage

Google Docs is an option for any of the Office style documents. Being able
to collaboratively edit documents is a godsend. You can also easily share
the docs with external people such as vendors and contractors and not have
to email versions of Word docs back and forth.

I am now exploring wikis, and especially Sharepoint (not a wiki, but a very
useful way to organize files and related ephemera), looking for better ways
to ensure that files are grouped together in ways that facilitate work,
rather than adding to backup costs These, too, are sanest hosted in the
 Cloud.

Try Confluence https://www.atlassian.com/software/confluence from
Atlassian for a wiki. It fits the bill of being an easy to use and being a
wiki ;-)

The file server is the hardest piece, because it is so dependent on your
external internet connection speed (mostly) and latency (the time it takes
your action to travel over the wires to an externally-hosted document).

If you are storing content on Amazon s3 then check out the storage gateway
(and its competitors) - http://aws.amazon.com/storagegateway/. This service
has a local cache which means less data across the wire.

And lastly even if you continue to host internally you should be thinking
about how you can harness some cloud services for things like backup and
caching. If you publish your collections online you will be amazed out how
much better performance you get if you cache the images using Amazon
CloudFront.

Cheers from down under!

[MCN-L] A working list of free/low-cost alternatives to Adobe Creative Cloud products

2014-06-28 Thread Glen Barnes

For audio, Audacity is a solid and free cross-platform editor. FFMPEG
to replace Adobe Media Encoder is a natural but could use a GUI (Miro
Video Encoder used to do but has recently gotten bloated with browser
 add-ons, any suggestions?).

Check out Zencoder (http://www.zencoder.com) or Amazon Elastic Transcoder (
http://aws.amazon.com/elastictranscoder/) if you want to do bulk
video/audio transcoding. 5 cents a min for a pay as you go and it take
basically anything and output basically anything.

Audacity is is good for quite a few things and I've also found Fission to
be good (http://rogueamoeba.com/fission/). Just yesterday I had to batch
convert 30 wav files to mp3 and it was a simple drag, drop and a couple of
clicks.

For image editing on Windows I used to use Paint.net (
http://www.getpaint.net/index.html). I'm all Mac but if I have to use a
Windows box to do something then I install this.

http://alternativeto.net also has lots of recommendations (Although their
website seems to be a bit broken right now).

Cheers
Glen

[MCN-L] Gift Shop Point of Sales Solutions (Blackwell, Katherine)

2014-07-11 Thread Glen Barnes
I would have to put a plug in for fellow kiwi company VendHQ who are making
waves worldwide with their cloud based POS system - http://www.vendhq.com.
The main thing I have seen feedback on is that whatever you choose you need
to make sure you set it up properly to start with - Make sure the
accounting department is on board, you hook it in with existing systems,
etc.

One of the key strengths of a cloud based POS system is cost - You can get
up and running at a fraction of the cost of traditional POS systems. The
data is also available across multiple sites so you can just pick up an
iPad and use the same POS system at an offsite event or separate venue.

Thanks
Glen

I'm investigating point-of-sales systems for use in a gift shop
environment. I noticed some discussion in the archives about Retail Pro,
Gateway and Counterpoint. I'm curious what other solutions people are
 using.

If you are using a gift shop POS system, I would love to know:

 1. How well the system has been received at your institution by key
 stakeholders (end users, IT, finance).

 2. What key strengths and weaknesses have been observed.

 3. What the hosting model is. Has anyone used a cloud solution?

Your insights are much appreciated. Thanks!

Has anyone used (or considered using) KWI as a point of sales solution in
their museum shops? KWI is a cloud inventory management and point of sale
 solution.

Re: [MCN-L] High efficiency scanners

2015-03-01 Thread Glen Barnes
I'm not sure what you have to scan but have you looked at what the Internet
Archive offers? 10 cents a page. https://archive.org/scanning

Brewster Kahle gave a talk at NDF last year and I was very impressed with
their setup. They will be bringing out a DIY $10K scanner this year which
looks like a great option for cheapish, high volume scanning.

Re: [MCN-L] handheld GPS devices for recording object locations

2015-06-11 Thread Glen Barnes
I'm thinking you should just use an app on a smartphone? There are tons
around but it sounds like you need something basic - An app that allows you
to go to a location and record a POI with some form of data and then export
the list. iOS or Android should be fine. Just check how good the GPS unit
is on the device or you could use something like this app which averages
GPS coordinates to give a more accurate location:

So in short save $200 and use what you have in your pocket!

 Hi all,
I want to see if anyone out there has a recommendation for a handheld GPS
device. We are going to attempt to use GPS coordinates for recording
specific locations of objects on the grounds of our 66-acre campus. There
seems to be a few big names in the market (Garmin, for example), and I'm
thinking of something in the $200-$300 range. But I'm having trouble
 narrowing it down.
Has anyone researched such equipment and have any advice they would be
willing to share? Thanks in advance for your help!

Edit: That app did seem like it hadn't been updated in a while. Try:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.blogspot.solheimsoftware.gps.location.saverhl=en

I've used Ultra GPS Logger in the past while drive testing some tours;

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.flashlight.lite.gps.logger

And try this search on the Google Play Store

https://play.google.com/store/search?q=ultra%20gps%20loggerc=appshl=en

Plenty of options ;-)

Re: [MCN-L] Data-driven museum maps?

2015-07-23 Thread Glen Barnes
I do a bit of work on OSM in New Zealand but haven't yet done anything for
indoors. I'm not sure OSM is really the right tool for the job although
there have been several attempts -
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Indoor_Mapping#Projects

Since I last checked the IndoorGML spec has been published which looks
interesting - http://indoorgml.net.

In terms of delivery of maps MapBox seem to be the only ones doing
interesting open source stuff and storage in MBTiles seems like the way to
go.

I would be interested to see where you get with your project. Feel free to
ping me offline.

Re: [MCN-L] CZur book/document scanner Indiegogo

We’ve just ordered one to test out. I’ve got a DIY Bookscanner kit which
I’m just getting my head around and it will be interesting to see how this
scanner pans out. I’m really interested in using cheap but good hardware
for digitising local heritage. I do wonder how hackable it will be in terms
of storing images locally and coming up with your own workflow but for $200
it is worth a punt.

I will post something when we finally get a hold of it.

[MCN-L] Cases for Android devices

2015-11-12 Thread Glen Barnes
Hi All,

There seems to be a few options for protective cases for iPods and iPads
around but I haven’t had any luck finding cases for Android devices. Does
anybody know of decent protective cases for rental devices for Android
based devices? We haven’t selected any hardware yet so it could be for any
reasonably modern phone/tablet. Also charging solutions that would work for
multiple Android devices would be good.

And recommendations appreciated!

Re: [MCN-L] Online Collections Tagging

2015-11-16 Thread Glen Barnes
We’ve just done some initial testing with Clarifai
 for
auto-tagging images. The tags are not 100% but I think there is an
opportunity there to tag using something Clarifai and present these tags to
users - “Do any of these tags describe the work? painting, barn, landscape,
tractor”

They have 5000/month free plan which is good for testing. I would be
interested to see if others have had any experience with this or similar
systems.

Cheers

Hi Ntae,

I hadn’t but just tried with one image and the results weren’t as good. I
will take a closer look though. The great thing about Clarifai is that
there is transparent pricing on their website and self serve signup.
Alchemy allows you to get a dev key easily enough but upgrading is a
“Contact Sales” scenario.

Cheers for the link.

Re: [MCN-L] data archiving (Matt Wheeler)

2016-01-12 Thread Glen Barnes
The base _costs_ for online storage through Amazon s3 is ~$370/year. Plus
there are costs for pushing data into and out of the archive, another
copying in Amazon Glacier, plus developing the archival software so
$1200-$2000/year isn’t too bad but can be expensive for smaller
organisations.

You could try and roll something yourself if you basically wanted multiple
copies stored offsite. I would look at Amazon Glaicer + another storage
option that can have more on demand access. Backblaze have launched their
cloud offering at $0.005/GB month which comes out at $62/year for storage
with free upload. Add Amazon Glacier at $82/year and you have quite
reasonably priced storage across 2 different cloud providers.

You would have to manage all of the _preservation_ aspects yourself but the
storage becomes quite cheap in this scenario.

Thanks
Glen

[MCN-L] Metadata description language

We use iTours Australia/China Digital for our translations -

For our app work (menu’s, etc.) and any small one off work (say a single

beat it for speed and price and the quality seems to be OK.

We also use Transifex to manage our translations for our apps -

Re: [MCN-L] Platform for accessing text, images and videos in gallery spaces

There are plenty of different apps for iOS and Android that will allow you
to create interactive ‘presentations’ that can be run on kiosks or you can
use something like Kiosk Pro (http://www.kioskproapp.com) and author your
content as HTML and lock down the device.

In terms of devices, define affordable :-). If you can stretch to iPads
then you can get the new iPad for $329. You can get Android tablets cheaper
but just make sure you test them out first and see if they work for what
you want. Quality varies widely but check AliExpress for some options -

Re: [MCN-L] Managing and storing video content for website

2017-07-09 Thread Glen Barnes
So we don’t manage a museum website but we do manage 1000’s of audio and
video clips at My Tours. We use Amazon s3
<https://aws.amazon.com/s3/?nc2=h_m1> for storage (Backed up to Backblaze B2
<https://www.backblaze.com/b2/cloud-storage.html>) and Amazon Elastic
Transcoder <https://aws.amazon.com/elastictranscoder/?nc2=h_m1> for
converting the source content into different formats (streaming, HD and SD
download, etc.).

We also use Amazon CloudFront <https://aws.amazon.com/cloudfront/?nc2=h_m1>
as the CDN to serve it all up. You can hook it all up so that as soon as
you drop the source file into S3 the ElasticTranscoder does its thing so
not a lot of set up required.

Re: [MCN-L] Examples of augmented reality in museums

2017-09-29 Thread Glen Barnes
I don’t know what others on this list think but this post seems like
blatant advertising? As a vendor myself I am very careful to only post
response to questions where we can add value to a discussion. I would hate
to see this discussion list to turn into a LinkedIn group ;-)

Re: [MCN-L] Preparing for quickly approaching GDPR deadline

2018-02-07 Thread Glen Barnes
"The GDPR not only applies to organisations located within the EU but it
will also apply to organisations located outside of the EU if they offer
goods or services to, or monitor the behaviour of, EU data subjects. It
applies to all companies processing and holding the personal data of data
subjects residing in the European Union, regardless of the company’s
location.”

If you collect data on an EU resident it counts. We have had to abide by
rules the US has pushed on the rest of the world in relation to money
laundering, travel and other areas for years. Our bank is making small
businesses in NZ who have no business outside of the local community fill
out forms declaring US based income, etc. (See FACTA:
https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/79049481/thousands-of-bank-customers-called-on-to-reveal-us-connections
)

The US is about to get a taste of its own medicine ;-) So yeah, welcome to
the club!

[MCN-L] Bulk charging stations

2018-08-23 Thread Glen Barnes
Apart from the Parat Solutions charging bays/cases has anybody had any
experiences with other vendors? Who else is out there that supplies this
type of equipment? Looking for something iPod Touch and also something
Android (for outdoor stuff that needs GPS).

Thanks

Just a word of caution here for interpretative text.

IMHO nothing is better than machine translation if dealing with culturally
significant text. Do you really want to trust a machine to translate
nuanced interpretation about ethnic cleansing or colonisation? This may
land your organisation in some sticky situations if the translations
somehow trivialised certain historical events.
