It was interesting when Jonathan Agar presented his book at the Institute of
Engineering Technology IET (c2003) that when some of the audience (who'd
created/delivered mobile communications) said yes, but you've missed out some
really important stuff ... he replied by saying that as an historian he can
only write about what has already been recorded and there wasn't that much to
go on.

As Rich says, thanks for the thread. I don't have a short Wired type of article
to offer although I'm working to fill some of the gaps that are still remaining
with some articles on mobile communications history - and mobile phones in
particular. If this thread prompts any unanswered questions I'd be interested
to know what they are, do get in touch.

Dear Katy

Here is a chapter from a mobile phone textbook I wrote with Nicola Green which
draws on Agar and others but tries to be more reflective on what counts as a
history.

Best wishes

Thanks Lee!
I was worried that Agar was too long, but I agree - it is the best out there.

I might have to stretch it out to 2 classes or something.

Thanks!!

Hi Katy,

I use Agar's first chapter of Constant Touch as my background reading, as well
as Carolyn Marvin's first chapter. I've attached the syllabus here for my
mobile comm class. It's from 2010 so it's kind of outdated at this point, but
I thought it might be helpful.

Cheers,
Lee

 Hi all.

I've been looking for a good history of mobile phones article - not terribly
long - for an undergraduate mobile comm class.

Any suggestions? Sometime along the lines of a good Wired or Slate or
 Atlantic article would be best.

 Thanks,
 Katy

Also the Eurostat data, collected with the “Survey on the use of ICTs by
households and individuals in Europe”, could be a useful source to check out.
The dataset covers approx. 30 countries and the 2002-2009 period.

Hello,

I am looking for a reliable source for compared adoption rates for mobile
phones and other technologies or media such as the landline phone, radio,
television, wristwatch...
I don't seem to be finding anything reliable or useful.
Does anyone have a reference I could use.

Thank you

[mobile-society] Directory of Mobile Phone numbers - UK mobile phone users want to be ex-directory

2009-07-15 Thread J.Vincent
In the UK many like to be ex-directory on their fixed phones but it seems that
for mobile phones keeping control of who has our mobile phone number is even
more important - see the story via the BBC link below. I recall that having a
directory of mobile phone numbers was a licence condition for some GSM network
operators but I am not certain it was ever implemented. It would be
interesting to know if the same emotional response to having your mobile phone
number published in a directory has happened elsewhere -t see the link below.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/technology/2009/07/118800_and_a_web_revolution.html

extract from email being forwarded all around the UK:

Maybe you have heard about this but early next week all UK mobiles will be on
a directory which will mean that anyone will be able to access the numbers. It
is easy to unsubscribe but it must be done before the beginning of next week to
make sure that you are ex directory. We have all unsubscribed and you may want
to suggest it to all your friends and family who have UK mobiles or they could
be swamped by unsolicited messages and calls. Removal is recommended by the BBC
- see link below.

The Directory of Mobile Phone numbers goes live next week
