On a very birdy morning at Rapids Lake MVNWR, I found my first for Minnesota
Prairie Falcon hunting in the grassland northwest of Rapids Lake. For

more of a reversion to the mean. The March thaw began at a reasonable time

I birded Carver county in the New Germany/Mayer
area including the Tacoma wetlands and found everything
to be either dry or no mud flats. Birded south of Cologne
also (150th St.) and it was dry. In three hours and over
100 miles I found one tiny wetland
With the posts about the lack of birds recently, I thought I'd share some of my
totals so far this 2019 fall season. Keep in mind that these are found in
areas with prime habitat. My Chaska neighborhood has never really been
productive for much of any migrant activity the last 10 years.
With the very cold February this year, I was not sure what to expect this
spring. Luckily things began thawing out normally in mid-March here in Carver
County.A lot of waterfowl habitat became available in traditional and
non-tradition flooded farm fields.Unfortunately, waterfowl was

several days of April and first few in May, the last two nights of more
favorable weather for migrating has led to an influx of recent migrants the
past 2 days. I saw 11 first of year birds yesterday and 6 more today.
After two warm springs in 2016 and 2017 and a mix of normal and warm springs in
the several years prior to that, we were due for a cold and snowy spring in
2018. With around 65 inches of snow from January 22 thru April 15 in eastern
Carver County, I was able to salvage March and early April

Just putting this quick note out there for anybody interested in searching,

A quick visit to this spot south of Cologne yesterday showed only modest
numbers of waterfowl present despite abundant water levels. With the opening of
water elsewhere the waterfowl has moved on. No need to make any visits to this
area for waterfowl.

There is always a difference in year to year migrations, and this fall has been

We observed nice mix of migrants today, with several Broad-winged Hawks giving
us nice looks. Plus a large number of Blue Jays were observed and also a good

passage and great warbler numbers yesterday afternoon at Carver Park, I was

While leading a walk at the Rapids Lake unit this morning, we observed some of

day this past week has yielded a first of year species for me. That's not
particularly difficult, since I spend so little time out during the winter
months and Carver County is not exactly a hotbed for birds during

This morning I found a total of 92 species in Carver County: 89 at Rapids Lake
MVNWR, 38 at Chaska Lake MVNWR, and a Common Nighthawk in Chaska. There were
a total of 6 raptor species, 5 flycatcher species, 3 vireo species, 21 warbler
species, and 11 sparrow species at Rapids Lake. At Chaska
After seeing 17 warbler species yesterday(May 7) at both Rapids Lake MVNWR(13)
and Carver Park Reserve(14) combined, today(May 8) I found 85 species at Rapids

On our way home from viewing the Hutchinson Snowy Owl today (we couldn't find
the Hawk Owl!) we spotted a Snowy atop a power pole along Highway 7. This
location was seven miles west of the roundabout at Highways 7 and 25 here in
Carver County, timing was around 6 PM. We were very surprised to

across eastern Carver County. The later arriving fall warbler are beginning to
meander across the county as well as a few of the other typical later arriving

I spent about 5 hours birding the Minnesota River valley this morning with good
warbler variety and numbers. Despite the numbers of birds I counted, there
are still stretches of trail without any activity and many warbler can be
easily missed as they silently(or very quietly) feed. Warbling

Following the directions of Doug Kieser, we went to the Wahibo marsh last night
and saw two ibises foraging together around the edge of the marsh on the east
shoreline. One was clearly a white-faced, but the other did not have the white
markings and may have been a glossy. I have some digiscope

My waterfowl count was up this morning at Rapids Lake MVNWR. All waterfowl
are being seen in the ever-growing areas of open water in the Minnesota River
besides any migrating flocks. Most have been in the river though. Eagle were
keeping the waterfowl quite skittish. Rapids Lake is

This morning I startled not one but three Long-eared Owls near Parley Lake at
Carver Park Reserve. They were roosting together in the same tree on a low
branch with some of the denser underbrush in the area when I walked by(within
10-15 feet). Luckily they did fly one by one, as I may not
Normally the Surf Scoter at Lake Waconia on Saturday(thanks to the report by
Doug Kieser) would have been the highlight of the week. Today, though, a
Hudsonian Godwit was at Chevalle wetlands(Chaska) taking the honors for the
week. I believe this was a juvenile but could be wrong about that.
It appears the strong west winds have guided the Brewer's Blackbird flocks to
Carver County slightly early this fall. There was a blackbird flock of mainly
Brewer's(some Red-winged) with 1250-1500 birds this morning southwest of Mayer.
A 2nd flock of only Brewer's Blackbird with around 250
October yielded the expected species this first week of the month. Over the
week I found 74 species in the county. Highlights are below.

A nice variety of mainly the usual late migrants/stragglers continue through
the area with 4 vireo, 10 warbler, and 12 sparrow species over the past few
days.

The variety and number of warbler/vireo in the area has sharply declined being
replaced by kinglets, sparrow, and in the past couple of days the usual surge
of Yellow-rumped Warbler. This month most of my time has been spent at Rapids
Lake, as both Carver Park and the arboretum yielded less
