Yes, this is possible using node anchors and \hpos etc. The interface is
slightly cumbersome, mainly because you have to make sure that anchors are
unique.
I sometimes use such constructs in my presentations, but not often enough to
build a nice interface

Your example does indeed show the issue I had reported on with Simpleslides:
the backgrounds of the slides are not as expected.
So it seems that beginning with version 2022-10-15 something has changed with
Metapost or the background mechanism.

no weekend update ... Mikael and I are working on / upgrading some math
stuff (numbering) and don't want it to be too bad, as well as (new /
improved) metapost stuff that we need to test first (and that also
involves quite some experiments and documentation)
