[nysbirds-l] Niagara Falls Great Egret Colony

2011-08-17 Thread WilliamWatsonSr
August 17 - There appears to be a disruption at the Niagara Falls Great
Egret Colony. Today (between 10:00 AM and 10:40 AM) I again observed the
Great Egret Colony from Three Sisters Island at Goat Island. I observed
four egret on one nest ( based on previous observations one of the four was
probably an adult with three full size nestling). Through the foliage I
observed two adults one of which could be seen feeding a nesting. With other
egrets between thes nesting locations I observed as many as eleven Great
Egrets. (Compared to only six seen on August 1st.)
However, when I observed the colony from the Canadian side I was disturbed
that I did not see any nests where I had observed four nests with a total
12 nestlings on August 1st. The maximum number of egrets observed today
from the Canadian side were three adult Great Egrets. I also observed 14
Common Mergansers and two Peregrine Falcons at Niagara Falls Ontario. It is
strange that the only nest left is the one that had the most mature Great
Egrets. The colony is located above the Canadian (Horseshoe) Falls on the
islands near the sunken barge. Also observed along the river in Niagara Falls
were TWO PLAYFULLY SOARING PEREGRINE FALCONS, seven Black-cr. Night Herons,
and 14 Common Mergansers.

Back in New York along the Niagara River the Osprey nest at Liberty Road
(Wheatfield) had SIX Ospreys on it. In the evening along Feeder Road at
Iroquois Nation Wild Life Refuge there the WILSON'S PHALAROPE with 23 Lesser
Yellowlegs, an adult Common Gallinule with 3 very small chicks, and 139
roosting Great Egrets.

August 16 at Rock Point Provincial Park (on the north shore of Lake Erie
35 km west of Fort Erie) there was the START OF WARBLER MIGRATION with
Nashville Warbler, Black-and-white Warbler, and two Yellow-rumped Warblers, in
addition to the breeding warblers. Also 37 Semipalmated Sandpipers, at least
2 Sanderlings, 3 Semipalmated Plovers, 12 Least Sandpipers, 3 Lesser
Yellowlegs, and a Yellow-billed Cuckoo. From Rock Point taking Downy Road
north
2 km and making a left on Rhymer Road to Mosaic Ponds where there were 4
Bald Eagles, 4 Dowitchers, 1 Greater Yellowlegs, 6 Lesser Yellowlegs, 4 Least
Sandpipers, 17 Caspian Terns, 4 Green-winged Teals, 2 Blue-winged Teals,
and 6 Great Egrets further west just passed the Innophospate plant. There
were also good birds in Fort Erie.

Best Wishes for Great Birding,
Bill Watson

Re: [nysbirds-l] Marbled Godwits, Jones Beach sand Bar

2011-08-17 Thread Ardith Bondi
Although we didn't keep track of numbers, Carole Berglie and I (Ardith
Bondi), arriving at about 1PM, saw quite a few of the smaller shorebirds
on the Jones Beach CGS sandbar, despite swimmers and boaters. They
included Semipalmated Plovers, Semipalmated Sandpipers and Sanderlings.
We also saw Black-bellied Plovers, Short-billed Dowitchers (at least 2),
Ruddy Turnstones and at least one Willet. Down the fishermans' trail
past the Coast Guard station, aside from some rather vocal juvenile
Common Terns and some Ruddy Turnstones, we spotted a Spotted Sandpiper.

Does anyone else think there is an inordinately large number of
Semi-palmated Plovers and Semi-palmated Sandpipers this year? Over the
past two weeks, I have seen very large numbers of them. In the Nickerson
Beach Parking lot and on the lawn there there were probably 1000. A few
days later, they virtually carpeted the beach at Long Beach Island, NJ
early in the morning before the beachgoers took over, and today, there
were still quite a few at the Coast Guard Station sandbar.

one of the half dozen or so birders noticed the MARBLED GODWIT among the
large group of remaining AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS and WILLET. It had been
sleeping, bill tucked in, and obscured by the mass of birds. As I
scoped, it picked up its head, showed its bill and stretched its wings
showing no upper wing stripe and lovely rusty under wing coverts. It
promptly went back to sleep and all but disappeared into the mass of birds.
As previously reported, the swale is a lake. I went over to see if the
missing shorebirds went there. No such luck. I returned to the Coast
Guard Station, scanned the bar and found TWO MARBLED GODWIT.

[nysbirds-l] Cupsogue Beach, L.I. Update, Aug. 17th

2011-08-17 Thread Carl Starace
Hello All,Dick Belanger and I were quite pleased this early morn
to find the flats at Cupsogue empty of all the usual: numerous and quite
serious clam muckers, noisy bayside scamperers, large running dogs , but
most particularly that deafening, MOSQUITO CONTROL HELICOPTER that has
twice, just recently, made shorebird viewing at Cupsogue flats a lost cause
for us. Without the aforementioned we were treated to unobstructed and
lengthy views of 6 Marbled Godwits and a juvenile Whimbrel. Four of the
Godwits, the Whimbrel and 2 "Western" Willets preened and rested for almost
an hour together across the little channel that feeds the encroaching tide
from the west. The two other Marbled's were casually feeding/napping just to
the east of them. Dowitchers,Turnstones, and Greater Yellowlegs were about
but the "peeps" had less presence today and there was no sign of the Black
Terns. Good August Birding, Carl Starace
