[nysbirds-l] Species Abundance Table - Addition of "New Arrivals" Links

2011-08-04 Thread Ben Cacace
I've added a new "feature" to the species abundance by month & season table.

Clicking on the location name in the left column i.e. "New York State" will
bring up an "Arrivals" list in descending order showing the newest arrivals
first.

Here are the current locations with links on the table. The "Arrivals"
report has a limitation where only single locations can be displayed i.e. a
state, a county or a park/location with a single hot spot. They are working
on this for sites like Central Park which currently has a total of 22 hot
spots.

All links are to the eBird.org site. Any issues with the sightings please
contact "eBird.org" ...

I visited Pike's Beach this evening - nothing spectacular or really all that
out of the ordinary but there were two non-breeding plumaged Piping Plovers,
several Greater Yellowlegs, a small group of Ruddy Turnstones and plenty of
semipalmated sandpipers. Photos can be seen here:

[nysbirds-l] Fwd: gull (or no gull) today

To: birdingd...@gmail.com

Hi Andrew,

I can't post to NY Birds but maybe you could forward this to the list

Several of us from Maryland and Virginia drove up today and failed to see
the gull. However we did obtain some information -- two gentlemen (locals)
said they had been at "the spot" (in front of Nathan's) from about 8 AM and
had not seen the bird. Adding, "we heard someone did about 7:30". Later
another birder said he had been told by a policeman (one of those on the
little run-abouts) that he -- the cop -- had seen the bird earlier further
south along the beach -- describing the "gull with the red bill and legs."
We did not meet any birders who personally had seen the gull; however since
we didn't arrive until 9:30 AM, those with early success may well have left.

I don't think the palm sprizter was off today only because it was cool --
the one further south was going full blast all day -- but because there was
a sandcastle-building project with day-camp kids most of the late morning
and early afternoon, and it was located right next to the sprayer. Who
knows? But obviously, if it is important to the gull they need to turn it on
-- all those scores of birders were eating a lot of hot dogs, ice cream
etc.!

Many of us who failed to see the bird will undoubtedly try again so any
reports -- a negative report is as valuable as a positive one, by the way,
if not as good to hear -- so please everyone, keep posting!

It is still at the ocean end of Leeward Ave in Beach Haven. I saw it this
morning and then saw it most of later this afternoon and tonight. Third
day in
a row it has been here. I have taken a number of pictures and will post
them

this weekend. It seems to hang out on the roof tops in the late afternoon
and evening and disappears right around sun down.

[nysbirds-l] Grey-Hood Gull - driving

2011-08-04 Thread Robert Lewis
Here  are some hints for those driving to Coney Island across Queens, having
crossed the Whitestone, Throgs Neck, or Triboro (RFK) Bridges.

First, Google traffic is very good;  go to Google maps and enter: traffic nyc.

In Westchester, avoid the Hutchinson River Parkway (the Hutch).  It is only two
lanes on each side.  The last two miles or so is usually bad, on both sides.
The best highway south through Westchester is the Spain Parkway.  It merges
with and becomes the BRP (Bronx River Parkway).  There is usually no problem
taking it all the way to the Cross Bronx and then going east to the Whitestone.
 Here is a map:  http://150.108.68.34/~rlewis/brpcb.jpg

But avoid the WESTBOUND Cross Bronx like the plague!

Then the obvious route on a map is go down the Van Wyck to Southern
Parkway/Belt Parkway, then west.

The first problem is that there is construction on the Van Wyck as it nears the
Jackie Robinson Parkway, about here 40.7182,-73.8265.  Often the backup starts
at least a half mile north of that.  Even worse, the Van Wyck south of this
point, down to JFK airport, is almost always jammed.  I usually exit at the
Jackie Robinson, then go south on Woodhaven Boulevard to the Belt Parkway.
Here is map:  http://150.108.68.34/~rlewis/mapgull.jpg       (On older maps,
the Jackie Robinson Parkway is called the Interboro.)

On the Belt Parkway, there is construction near here:  40.61,-73.9.  When I was
there Tuesday, it wasn't too bad.

Good luck!

Silvia Martin called at 3:55pm and reported that the gray-headed gull had not
been seen since she arrived at 1:30 this afternoon. The bird was seen at 7:30am
this morning, and as late as 8am, but not since. She said that they turned off
the fountain this morning and some think that that may have disrupted its
routine. Silvia was going to call again around 5pm, before she has to leave to
catch a bus.

Does anybody think that the GHGU will still stick around until the weekend?
I have not had the chance to see the bird and I'm worried it has already

anybody reported the Gull as of today (August 4th)?

There's a post from an Illinois birder / gull fancier on the Coney

There seem to be no updates on this Brooklyn gull for Thursday 8/4 so
far,
on this or any other list-serve that I am aware of. If seen, it
naturally ought
be reported - and on all subsequent days of it's occurrence[s] - in

RE: [nysbirds-l] Directions - subway access

2011-08-04 Thread Melanie Barotte
The MTA has a "Trip Planner" on its site - http://mta.info/ - that is quite
good. Enter your starting point Penn Station, Grand Central Terminal) and
destination (Coney Island/Stillwell Avenue) and it comes back with
itineraries and approximate travel time for the day and time you intend to
travel. One of the best parts of travelling by subway is that the trains to
Coney Island are elevated and outside a good portion of the way.

Note: Weekends are very dicey. Due to construction, there are planned
service changes and this can add considerably to your travel time. Last
Saturday, I took the D to Coney Island and it took forever because the train
was sharing a track with 2 other lines in Brooklyn. Looks like this week
it's the opposite - D okay on the way to Coney Island but rerouted coming
back into Manhattan. Do look at the Planned Service Changes if you are
intending to go on the weekend.

The Q also stops in Brighton Beach which is east of Coney Island and much
quieter if you're actually looking for some beach time. Or a Russian
restaurant in lieu of Nathan's. A walk of about a mile along the boardwalk.
The B train terminates at Brighton Beach but only runs Monday through
Friday.

outsiders need. I live in Suffolk County; I'd take the LIRR to Penn

not even be sure Penn Station was the best choice. Can we get some

Re: [nysbirds-l] Grey-Hood Gull - subway access

2011-08-04 Thread Sara Burch
We come in from Suffolk and on our original trip took the LIRR to Atlantic
Terminal (in Brooklyn), and then the Q down to Coney Island. It works really
well, and it's a somewhat shorter subway ride than going all the way from Penn
Station. If you were going in to Penn you could walk to the Q or the F at
Herald Square and take those all the way down. If you want to check your
options based on the time of day you're going, Google Maps also has public
transit directions that are decent. In any case, coming from Long Island it's
definitely better to take public transit than drive!

I think the problem with the subway idea for people who live outside the NYC

[nysbirds-l] GHGU directions Some alternative suggestions for out of NYCers

2011-08-04 Thread Meena Haribal
1. GHGU location
2. FW: Gray-Hooded Gull 8/2 late afternoon
3. RE: GHGU location

If someone is coming from out of state, then I think it would be far more
easier to drive via I 278 Staten Island and Belt parkway using Verrazano
Bridge, which is crowded but not later in the day or on week-ends. Even if it
is crowded it takes much lesser time than through city. Also remember the exit
for Belt parkway is to the left, so keep left on the bridge.

I have used this route when I have to drive to JFK. It is way faster than going
through the city.

Even if you plan to drive to city there is always problem as to where to park
your car to take a metro. So then the option I have chosen is to go to Hoboken
and park in the parking garage near NJ transit on Water st. and then take NJ
transit into NYC.

Hope this helps someone.

I am hoping someone can post directions to the Coney island bathhouse, from
the LIE. Thanx in advance Dan Furbish.

Step 1 is getting to the Belt Parkway.

From points north (e.g., Throgs Neck and Whitestone Bridges) and east
(Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk Counties), I suggest googling directions from
your starting point to JFK airport and using these as a basis for getting to
 the Belt Parkway.

 2. From the Belt Parkway, take exit 7, Ocean Parkway, south toward the
 Aquarium.

Go south on Ocean Parkway as far as you can, then right (west) on Surf Ave.

 3. The gull frequents the beachfront just south of Surf Ave, between the
Aquarium (8th St, I think) and 15th St, a small road with lots of metered
parking. If you can't find a space at 15th St, go back out onto Surf and look
for meters to the east (people have reported finding parking of various kinds
along Surf and at 12th and 10th Streets).

If you still have trouble (unlikely on a weekday), turn around and repeat the
process. If you get frustrated, you can pay for safe parking at the aquarium.

 4. Make note of what Street (e.g., 8th, or 12th, or 15th) you've parked near,
walk out onto the boardwalk, then navigate to a point even with 12th St
(three short blocks east of 15th or four short blocks west of the aquarium).
You will see the Wonder Wheel behind you and a fountain on the beach side
shaped like a palm tree. The gull likes this fountain and also perches on the
yellow volley ball net poles nearby, or on the beach, or on the signs above
the boardwalk businesses. When present, it is usually conspicuous, moving
around among these spots but seldom wandering west of the big pier or east of
 the aquarium.

RE: [nysbirds-l] Directions - subway access

2011-08-04 Thread Melanie Barotte
The MTA has a Trip Planner on its site - http://mta.info/ - that is quite

The B train terminates at Brighton Beach but only runs Monday through
Friday.

[nysbirds-l] Fwd: [Origins of Gray-hooded Gull (long post)]

2011-08-04 Thread Tom Fiore
There's a post from an Illinois birder / gull fancier on the Coney
Island bird:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ebirdsnyc/message/9301

There seem to be no updates on this Brooklyn gull for Thursday 8/4 so
far,
on this or any other list-serve that I am aware of. If seen, it
naturally ought
be reported - and on all subsequent days of it's occurrence[s] - in
the U.S.!

[nysbirds-l] Grey-Hooded Gull?

Does anybody think that the GHGU will still stick around until the weekend?
I have not had the chance to see the bird and I'm worried it has already
moved on, and the only time I can get down to Coney Island is Saturday. Has
anybody reported the Gull as of today (August 4th)?
Thank you! :)

[nysbirds-l] GHGU was seen this morning...

Just pulled this from the MA list serve. Apparently the bird was seen early
this morning but not since (see below)

Silvia Martin called at 3:55pm and reported that the gray-headed gull had not
been seen since she arrived at 1:30 this afternoon. The bird was seen at 7:30am
this morning, and as late as 8am, but not since. She said that they turned off
the fountain this morning and some think that that may have disrupted its
routine. Silvia was going to call again around 5pm, before she has to leave to
catch a bus.

Good luck!

It is still at the ocean end of Leeward Ave in Beach Haven. I saw it this
morning and then saw it most of later this afternoon and tonight. Third
day in
a row it has been here. I have taken a number of pictures and will post

this weekend. It seems to hang out on the roof tops in the late afternoon

[nysbirds-l] Fwd: gull (or no gull) today

2011-08-04 Thread Andrew Baksh
Please see the e-mail below from Gail Mackiernan, who asked me to post this
on the list serve.

-- Forwarded message --
From: Gail Mackiernan katahdi...@comcast.net

Subject: gull (or no gull) today
To: birdingd...@gmail.com

Hi Andrew,

I can't post to NY Birds but maybe you could forward this to the list

Several of us from Maryland and Virginia drove up today and failed to see
the gull. However we did obtain some information -- two gentlemen (locals)
said they had been at the spot (in front of Nathan's) from about 8 AM and
had not seen the bird. Adding, we heard someone did about 7:30. Later
another birder said he had been told by a policeman (one of those on the
little run-abouts) that he -- the cop -- had seen the bird earlier further
south along the beach -- describing the gull with the red bill and legs.

[nysbirds-l] Species Abundance Table - Addition of New Arrivals Links

2011-08-04 Thread Ben Cacace
I've added a new feature to the species abundance by month season table.

Clicking on the location name in the left column i.e. New York State will
bring up an Arrivals list in descending order showing the newest arrivals
first.

Here are the current locations with links on the table. The Arrivals
report has a limitation where only single locations can be displayed i.e. a
state, a county or a park/location with a single hot spot. They are working
on this for sites like Central Park which currently has a total of 22 hot
spots.

All links are to the eBird.org site. Any issues with the sightings please
contact eBird.org eb...@cornell.edu ...
