[nysbirds-l] Birds at Mecox Bay, Long island

2012-05-23 Thread AndyatWH
Hugh McGuiness reported a large number of sandpipers on the sand flats, I
was at the same area at roughly the same time, and had also very good looks
at a Whimbrel, and took some nice pictures( if anyone wishes to see them).
The bird was on the West side of the flats, while the sandpipers and Gulls
were on the East.

[nysbirds-l] Alder Flycatcher - Northport (Suffolk Co.)

I had a singing *Alder Flycatcher* this morning at Fuch's Pond in
Northport. This location can be accessed by walking east down the
right-of-way that crosses Soundview Court; it was in the Red Maples north
of the overgrown pond on the right. Approximate coordinates: 40.916987,

Also of interest in the area were two Saltmarsh Sparrows in Crab Meadow and
a male Black Skimmer on Hobart Beach in Eaton's Neck.

[nysbirds-l] Central Park, April 23rd

2012-05-23 Thread David
Starr Saphir's group had 64 species including 19 warblers in Central Park
today. The Summit Rock area proved highly fruitful early on, with one tree
producing 13 warbler species including a female BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER. In
addition to the birds on Joe Dicostanzo's list we also had these highlights:

Green Heron (west shore of Lake)
Least Flycatcher (tree just south of Castle)
Eastern Kingbird (several)
Blue-headed Vireo (Ramble south of Castle, found by Lenore Swenson)
Gray-cheeked Thrush (Strawberry Fields)
Bay-breasted Warbler (Upper Lobe)
Blackburnian Warbler (Summit Rock, and male Tupelo Meadow)
Rose-breasted Grosbeak (female, King Jagiello statue)

[nysbirds-l] New York City, Central Park, May 23, 2012

2012-05-23 Thread Joe DiCostanzo
My last Wdnesday morning AMNH Central Park walk for the spring got lucky with a
nice fallout of birds. Showers at sunup were replace by muggy, but clearing
weather by 7 am when the walk started. There were good numbers of birds all
around the Ramble, though because of the heavy foliage and the high proportion
of female birds, the birding was sometimes challenging. Highlights included:

Eastern Wood-Pewee (several calling around the Ramble)
Yellow-bellied Flycatcher (by Upper Lobe)
unidentified Empidonax flycatcher (by Upper Lobe)
Great Crested Flycatcher
Warbling Vireo (usual birds on territory)
Red-eyed Vireo (everywhere)
Veery (all around Ramble)
Swainson's Thrush (scttered around Ramble)
Wood Thrush
Cedar Waxwing (small flocks feeding and flying around)
Northern Parula (fewer than in recent weeks)
Yellow Warbler (also fewer than in recent weeks)
Chesnut-sided Warbler (several singing males)
Magnolia Warbler (males and female all over)
Black-throated Blue Warbler (a few singing males, plus females)
Yellow-rumped Warbler (seen by Danny Lynch and John Walsh)
Black-throated Green Warbler (scattered individuals)
Blackpoll Warbler (all over)
Black-and-white Warbler (seen by Danny Lynch and John Walsh)
American Redstart (all over)
Ovenbird (near Azalea Pond)
Mourning Warbler (male by north end of Upper Lobe - thanks to John Walsh and
Danny Lynch for the heads-up)
Common Yellowthroat (all over)
Wilson's Warbler (east side of bridge over Upper Lobe)
Canada Warbler (males and females seem to be well distributed)
Scarlet Tanager (two females by Balcony Bridge)

[nysbirds-l] Coastal Flight Last Night

2012-05-23 Thread Shaibal Mitra
As many of us had earnestly hoped, rumors of an early end to the spring 2012
landbird migration were premature.

On my way to Staten Island this morning, I drove along the barrier beach (not
generally a popular place to watch spring landbird migration), where I expended
almost zero effort looking for landbirds. Even so, I observed a Bank Swallow
and two Northern Rough-winged Swallows at Robert Moses SP, a Ruby-throated
Hummingbird and a Magnolia Warbler at Captree SP, and the following at Jones
Beach West End (most of these from the car as I drove through):

1 Ruby-throated Hummingbird
About a dozen probable migrant Gray Catbirds (difficult to distinguish from
locals, but at least some newly arrived migrants clearly present)
1 Nashville Warbler
4 migrant Yellow Warblers, including at least one apparent amnicola (northerly
breeding subspecies) closely studied
1 Magnolia Warbler
4 Blackpoll Warblers
2 American Redstarts
at least 6 obvious migrant Common Yellowthroats (bouncing westward among
isolated small clumps of veg)

I am certain that with even a little bit of dedicated effort, the thickets
would have been very productive.

A one-hour seawatch at Robert Moses yielded 43 Sooty Shearwaters and 31 Black
Scoters.
