I arrived on the parade ground at approximately at 7:10 this morning to
scout for my NYC Audubon Van Cortlandt Park bird walk. Shortly after my

The West Pond birding was a disaster today compared to what it was for
many years! There were no birds at all in the west pond except one lonely
Great Egret! Not even ruddy ducks, blacks, mallards, swans or brant! ( There
were about 30 Brant however in marshes in the bay).

ELIAS/ QWR Fall Seed Sale, held at the Quogue Wildlife Refuge in Quogue.
While helping customers get their purchases (seed, bird feeders, etc.) out
to their cars, I was rewarded with a very close, and unobstructed view of

These pics are from friday. The most surprising thing I saw was a Northern
Harrier flying low over the waves past Breezy Point heading west, quite far
from any shore. It was heading into a strong NW wind. What a bird.

The Buffleheads are back! Buffleheads were observed on my first bird walk for
Bartow Pell Mansion. I will be doing two more bird tours, Dec 21 and Jan. 9th -
Prowling for Owls.
The Mansion is a great place to bird because its north side borders a marsh and
it's south side is Pelham Bay Park

At about 5:55 this morning I saw a single Short-eared Owl West of the Fire
Island National Seashore visitor center next to Smith Point county park. I
watched it for perhaps a minute before it dropped out of sight - I hung
around until I thought it was getting too light, but never picked it up
Dave Klauber just called to report that he and Bobby Rosetti just found a
Western Kingbird along the upper lot at Captree State Park.
Good luck if you try for it.
