[nysbirds-l] Franklin Mt. Hawkwatch--2013 wrapup
The 2013 season at the Franklin Mt. Hawkwatch came to a quiet end today, with no raptors recorded on light to moderate westerly winds. This marked the 25th consecutive year of counting at the site. The season began on August 20, and in between, 674 hours of coverage were put in on 111 days by our team of dedicated counters, including Andy Cooper, Larry Dake, Fred Fries, Becky Gretton, Steve Hall, Andrea Lodovice, Randy Lynch, Andy Mason and Tom Salo. The total count of 4859 raptors is below the 12 year average of 5335, since full time counting began at the site. This number would have been lower if not for a good count of 1993 Broad-winged Hawks, 40% above the 12 year average. Broad-wings provided two excellent days at the lookout. On Sept. 14, Larry Dake tallied 523; this was followed on Sept. 17 by 916 broad-wings counted by Becky Gretton-breaking the previous high daily count of 900 for the species at Franklin Mt. The day's total raptor count of 962 birds fell just short of the record of 975 set in Oct., 1990. The only other positive species was Bald Eagle at 157 birds for the season, just slightly above average. Notably low counts included Osprey, at 49 the lowest count in 17 years; Northern Harrier, 33 birds-down 53% from average; and Red-tailed Hawk, down 23% with 1427 counted. Golden Eagles came in at a low 129 birds, 29% below average. However, these Franklin Mt. favorites did provide four double-digit days-Nov. 3-16 birds; Nov. 12-11; Nov. 19-15; and an excellent late season flight of 18 on Dec. 7. Another notable sighting was the second Black Vulture ever at Franklin Mt., spotted on Sept. 16 by Randy Lynch. [nysbirds-l] Western Grebe - Sea Cliff, L.I.
I stopped at Sea Cliff about 1PM today to check for the previously reported Black Guillemot at the intersection of Cliffway and the Blvd. I did not see the Guillemot but instead a large grebe caught my eye. In my bins in back light I was thinking it was a Red-necked Grebe. When I got my scope on it I realized the bird was a WESTERN GREBE. I took a few poor digi-scoped pictures before the bird took off and flew northwest towards Sands Point. I had distant scope views of it across the bay but I lost track of the bird and couldn't relocate it. Sea Cliff and the beach at Sands Point might both be worth checking for this bird in the coming days. Happy New Year to all! [nysbirds-l] Some Brooklyn Birds
Had a good start to a New Year of birding with several nice sightings in Brooklyn. At Coney Island a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL and first year GLAUCOUS GULL continue on the Coney Island Creek side of the peninsula. In addition, there was a RED-NECKED GREBE feeding in the rip off of Norton Point. At Green-Wood Cemetery an immature RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was a quick find, only about 50 yards up the road from the main entrance. [nysbirds-l] Jones Beach WE2
Late this morning I went to Jones Beach WE2. Found the Northern Shrike on a tree directly south of the parking lot (just west of the large swath of un-vegetated beach) without even trying. After I took one photo it was gone. [nysbirds-l] King Eider - Bayville Beach (Nassau Co.)
Happy New Year everyone, A female King Eider was far offshore from Stehli Beach (the westernmost beach on the Bayville strip). I was standing just beyond the little pavillion about halfway down the parking lot and looking due north. It was associating with a long line of White-winged Scoter (and almost nothing else) a couple of hundred yards offshore. I thought I saw a report of a female from this area sometime in the last couple of weeks but can't find it now - and I assume this was the same bird the Northern Nassau CBC reported. There was one flock of goldeneye there - no Barrow's. A second group was halfway between the big parking area for Ransom Beach in Bayville and the apparently private overlook on Merritt Lane to the east. A cursory look showed no funky goldeneyes, although apparently a female was there this morning per Angus Wilson on eBird. Also no luck around Sands Point, although Andrew Baksh had a drake there this morning as well. [nysbirds-l] Jan 1st birds
I saw 1 SNOWY OWL & a light phased ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK at the Syracuse Airport around 10:00 this morning. Both birds were in the north section of the airport, seen from near the State Police barracks. The Snowy was a heavily barred individual and was sitting on the ground, while the Roughie was hunting along the back edge of the field. The white GLAUCOUS GULL was at the Inner Harbor hanging out with a mess of Great Black-backed Gulls, while the harbor was full of HOODED (87) and COMMON (65) MERGANSERS, along with some MALLARDS, 3 GADWALL, and 2 CORMORANTS. [nysbirds-l] Red-headed Woodpecker, Hauppauge (Suffolk)
Today, I observed the immature Red-headed Woodpecker that has taken up residence in my yard and my neighbor’s yard since November 22nd. Since I first saw it on the 22nd, it spends all its time caching food in the various large oak trees on the properties. It never comes to any of the suet feeders and aggressively chases other birds, even Red-bellied Woodpeckers, and even squirrels once in a while. Nice bird for New Years Day. Not sure what it’s doing in such a suburban setting. We’ll see how it does with tomorrow’s storm and Friday’s temperatures. A Gyrfalcon continues at Cedar Beach LI. The bird was teed up in a Cedar tree out in the marsh and was pointed out by a couple of PA birders. Observed with Doug Futuyma and Bob Pronoviewych. [nysbirds-l] Jan 1st birds
I saw 1 SNOWY OWL a light phased ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK at the Syracuse Airport around 10:00 this morning. Both birds were in the north section of the airport, seen from near the State Police barracks. The Snowy was a heavily barred individual and was sitting on the ground, while the Roughie was hunting along the back edge of the field. The white GLAUCOUS GULL was at the Inner Harbor hanging out with a mess of Great Black-backed Gulls, while the harbor was full of HOODED (87) and COMMON (65) MERGANSERS, along with some MALLARDS, 3 GADWALL, and 2 CORMORANTS. Drake King Eider patrolling along Fort Tilden shore today. It was moving eastwards with a small flock of mergansers, heading towards Riis, when we saw it around noon. [nysbirds-l] King Eider - Bayville Beach (Nassau Co.)
Happy New Year everyone, A female King Eider was far offshore from Stehli Beach (the westernmost beach on the Bayville strip). I was standing just beyond the little pavillion about halfway down the parking lot and looking due north. It was associating with a long line of White-winged Scoter (and almost nothing else) a couple of hundred yards offshore. I thought I saw a report of a female from this area sometime in the last couple of weeks but can't find it now - and I assume this was the same bird the Northern Nassau CBC reported. There was one flock of goldeneye there - no Barrow's. A second group was halfway between the big parking area for Ransom Beach in Bayville and the apparently private overlook on Merritt Lane to the east. A cursory look showed no funky goldeneyes, although apparently a female was there this morning per Angus Wilson on eBird. Also no luck around Sands Point, although Andrew Baksh had a drake there this morning as well. Late this morning I went to Jones Beach WE2. Found the Northern Shrike on a tree directly south of the parking lot (just west of the large swath of un-vegetated beach) without even trying. After I took one photo it was gone. Had a good start to a New Year of birding with several nice sightings in Brooklyn. At Coney Island a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL and first year GLAUCOUS GULL continue on the Coney Island Creek side of the peninsula. In addition, there was a RED-NECKED GREBE feeding in the rip off of Norton Point. At Green-Wood Cemetery an immature RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was a quick find, only about 50 yards up the road from the main entrance. [nysbirds-l] Western Grebe - Sea Cliff, L.I.
I stopped at Sea Cliff about 1PM today to check for the previously reported Black Guillemot at the intersection of Cliffway and the Blvd. I did not see the Guillemot but instead a large grebe caught my eye. In my bins in back light I was thinking it was a Red-necked Grebe. When I got my scope on it I realized the bird was a WESTERN GREBE. I took a few poor digi-scoped pictures before the bird took off and flew northwest towards Sands Point. I had distant scope views of it across the bay but I lost track of the bird and couldn't relocate it. Sea Cliff and the beach at Sands Point might both be worth checking for this bird in the coming days. Happy New Year to all! [nysbirds-l] Franklin Mt. Hawkwatch--2013 wrapup
The 2013 season at the Franklin Mt. Hawkwatch came to a quiet end today, with no raptors recorded on light to moderate westerly winds. This marked the 25th consecutive year of counting at the site. The season began on August 20, and in between, 674 hours of coverage were put in on 111 days by our team of dedicated counters, including Andy Cooper, Larry Dake, Fred Fries, Becky Gretton, Steve Hall, Andrea Lodovice, Randy Lynch, Andy Mason and Tom Salo. The total count of 4859 raptors is below the 12 year average of 5335, since full time counting began at the site. This number would have been lower if not for a good count of 1993 Broad-winged Hawks, 40% above the 12 year average. Broad-wings provided two excellent days at the lookout. On Sept. 14, Larry Dake tallied 523; this was followed on Sept. 17 by 916 broad-wings counted by Becky Gretton-breaking the previous high daily count of 900 for the species at Franklin Mt. The day's total raptor count of 962 birds fell just short of the record of 975 set in Oct., 1990. The only other positive species was Bald Eagle at 157 birds for the season, just slightly above average. Notably low counts included Osprey, at 49 the lowest count in 17 years; Northern Harrier, 33 birds-down 53% from average; and Red-tailed Hawk, down 23% with 1427 counted. Golden Eagles came in at a low 129 birds, 29% below average. However, these Franklin Mt. favorites did provide four double-digit days-Nov. 3-16 birds; Nov. 12-11; Nov. 19-15; and an excellent late season flight of 18 on Dec. 7. Another notable sighting was the second Black Vulture ever at Franklin Mt., spotted on Sept. 16 by Randy Lynch.
