Hi all,
I was on a walk this morning (10/4) led by Michael Bochnik at the Marshlands
Conservancy in Rye.
Highlights:
2 NELSON'S SPARROWS
2 SALTMARSH SPARROWS
5+ sharp-tailed Sparrow sp.
2 Clapper Rails (both seen well)
1 Red-breasted Nuthatch
49 species total.

Then I noticed a group of around 15 vultures perched close together in a
group of trees, but I was unable to identify them all to species as we drove
by.

American Pipit 4 -- On the beach.
Northern Harrier 1 -- Flying SW not 3 feet off the water, fighting the wind.
Also of note, I counted 346 Canada Geese flying southwest in several groups,
probably being pushed south due to the recent snowfall. A Horned Grebe
around too.

65 COMMON REDPOLLS this afternoon at Read Sanctuary. A flock of 40 in a birch
stand, and a flock of 25 that came in off the sound and flew right overhead.

three singing Kentucky Warblers in this general area. I wonder if there are any
females around...unlikely, I would guess, as these birds are singing frequently
in midday--and so are probably unpaired. Still, something to keep track of!

Palms migrate later than Yellow Palms, so perhaps one is more likely to

Interesting. I could well be wrong, but I wouldn't typically think of geese
departing farm fields as doing so relatively uniformly on a broad circular
front. Some groundtruthing might be worthwhile...

Northern Harrier 1 -- Flying SW not 3 feet off the water, fighting the wind.
Also of note, I counted 346 Canada Geese flying southwest in several groups,
probably being pushed south due to the recent snowfall. A Horned Grebe
around too.

stand, and a flock of 25 that came in off the sound and flew right overhead.

telephone pole toward the end of Lazy Point in Napeague.

drifted ~100 m further south, but
still very visible from the path. There were several Bonaparte's Gulls around
too, plus scattered Purple Sandpipers. No sign of the adult gull.

three singing Kentucky Warblers in this general area. I wonder if there are any
females around...unlikely, I would guess, as these birds are singing frequently
in midday--and so are probably unpaired. Still, something to keep track of!

At least one LAPLAND LONGSPUR on top of the capped landfill this morning.
Plus about half a dozen Snow Buntings, a smattering of larks and pipits,
and two Vesper Sparrows. A number of flyover Purple Finches were my first

Palms migrate later than "Yellow" Palms, so perhaps one is more likely to
run into *palmarum* amongst these (relatively) later migrants than earlier
in the month--be in the lookout!
