[nysbirds-l] marbled godwit

2012-08-09 Thread MICHAEL HIGGISTON
The marbled godwit was seen west of the Ponquogue Bridge this morning
around 9 AM at low tide. It was best seen from the end of Road K,
bayside, looking to the northwest. There is a dirt spit with reeds,
just west of the big island. The godwit was seen just beyond the dirt
spit in the water preening. It was still there at 9:30, when we left.
A scope is recommended.

[nysbirds-l] whip-poor-will

2016-06-08 Thread MICHAEL HIGGISTON
I would like to correct my email from last night, as it was misleading.
Rereading that post, it would seem to indicate that the bird was in the
parking lot.  It was not.  The whip was calling from a distance, west of
the refuge, probably from the grounds of Westhampton Airport.

The refuge manager told me that he had heard the chuck calling on
several occasions this spring from around the refuge.

[nysbirds-l] red headed woodpecker

2017-04-19 Thread MICHAEL HIGGISTON
The red headed WP was seen this morning around 8:30 in Sunken Meadow
SP.   We were lucky as the bird was very quiet and remain perched in one
place for about 15 min.

Directions:
The main road into SMSP includes a bridge.  at the end of the bridge,
there is a road, Naples Road, that leads to the golf course.  Park in
lot immediately to the right.  Follow Naples Road (it is so marked at
the intersection) until you pass the closed parking lot.  continue until
you see the first lightpole on your left.  About 10 feet before this
pole, you'll see a chain hanging from 2 trees.  That's the trailhead.
Take the (winding) trail about quarter mile until you come to a dried
out sandy streambed.   Go up the other side and look for the WP on the
right side of the trail.

Thanks to Jim Osterlund, Suzy Feustal, Peter Reisfeld for helpful
directions and to Vinny Pellegrino for finding the WP.

[nysbirds-l] North Fork sightings

2016-07-20 Thread MICHAEL HIGGISTON
On Tuesday, a bobwhite was heard at 8:30 in the field north of Oregon
Road at the corner of Bridge Lane in Southold, Long Island.  This is our
go-to place for bobwhite.

Later, around 9 AM at Cedar Beach, a whimbrel was spotted in the marsh
behind the beach.  Whimbrels are seen in this marsh nearly every summer.

Two marsh wrens were heard, then seen, on Narrow River Road in Orient
about a half mile south of North Road on the berm around 9:45 AM.
