RE: [nysbirds-l] Bald eagle sighting?

2014-07-09 Thread John J. Collins
The nest at Bashakill had one large eaglet in it when I viewed it on June
6th. It may have fledged by now. One of the adults was sitting in a tree
near the nest. This nest is viewed from the boat launch area on the east
side of the kill. I also saw an adult fly over the marsh from Haven Road
the same day.

Best chance to see a Bald Eagle right now is just about equal  anywhere,
although the farther upriver you go, i.e., Putnam and Orange counties ...
the
better the chances.

They are almost certainly all out of their nests by now so there are
probably
25-30 newly-fledged immatures between Westchester County and Albany, plus an

equal numbers of adults, and maybe even more yearlings birds.  The best
strategy
might be to just drive north and visit riverside parks and peninsulas and
see if
they come by. Most adults are quite actively engaged with their fledglings
so
you may even see more than one.

RE: [nysbirds-l] Crow Shoot scheduled in Greene County

2014-03-18 Thread John J. Collins
While Rooks may have been eaten in the past, the rhyme in question wasn’t about
Rooks. It was about LIVE birds (specifically named “Blackbirds” which are
indeed the European or Common Blackbird, Turdus merula) which were placed in
the pie ALIVE so that “when the pie was open the birds began to sing”
(something you would be hard-pressed to hear a Rook do!!!) and fly away
(something nestling Rooks would not be able to do either) to the amazement of
the King. See the very nice Wikipedia entry on this subject at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sing_a_Song_of_Sixpence.

The "Blackbirds" mentioned would almost certainly have been Rooks (Corvus
frugilegus) which were regularly eaten historically in Europe. Usually young
birds taken from nests before they fledged. Adult crows probably aren't the
tastiest of game birds, although I suppose technically edible. I doubt many
will make it to the table in this case though.

Dear Larry and others,
I wrote to the club yesterday and received the following answer. (See Below)
Judging from the way it's worded I don't think they care what any of us think.
It's preposterous that they are "gathering" the crows to eat.

Approaching our government representatives is a good way to go but perhaps some
press coverage of this event my make them think twice. I don't know any
journalists in that area that would take up the story. Anyone else have any
contacts along these lines.

Rick,
Thank you for your input. Your opinion of our event is expected. We applaud
your respect for nature and the crow. The crow is meaningful. We believe in
utilizing the animal for all its worth. It sounds as if you do not realize that
crow can and has been consumed for centuries. I'm sure as anecdotal evidence
you would recall "4 and 20 blackbirds baked in a pie".
You may gather and eat different things, however that does not negatively
define us as sportsmen.

2013-12-30 Thread John J. Collins
I went to Sea Cliff, Hempstead Harbor, Long Island this morning at about 10
AM and then returned after lunch around 1 PM but did not see the previously
reported BLACK GUILLEMOT. In the morning there were two NORTHERN GANNETS at
the mouth of the harbor (one sitting on the water and the other flying
about) an and adult BALD EAGLE flew over and circled a bit before flying
off.

I vote for Chipping Sparrow in non-breeding plumage - the black eye-line is
very strong unlike in Clay-colored giving it dark lores unlike Clay-colored.

Hi,

Had hundreds of migrants stop to drink and bathe in the stream i built over
the summer here in Harriman. However I snapped a few photos of a Sparrow
that I can't really identify.

I'm leaning towards Clay-colored but could really use some expert opinions.

Today, for the 2nd day in a row, I tried for the Red-necked Stint at
Cupsogue County Park, Suffolk Co. And for the 2nd day in a row, I started
too late, thereby insuring the same negative results as on 7/1.

Also, as on the 1st, on my way out to the flats, I met folks who had seen
the bird. First, in the parking lot, it was Bill Hanley, albeit, with the
qualifier it was not being seen at present. Upon reaching the flats, I found
Menachem Goldstein and his very special mother, Karen, both of whom had laid
eyes on the bird, "but not for awhile now". After a very pleasant
"chit-chat", they had to leave, and left to my own devices, did see a 1st
year Arctic Tern and a Roseate Tern, along with 4 differently plumaged
Black Terns. In regard to different plumages, there were at least 3 new Red
Knot arrivals, each sporting much more color than yesterday's birds.

A quick perusal of Westhampton Dunes' Overlook went "stint-less" !

Cheers,

Bob

Just saw a Great Gray Owl on the Campground Rd at Robert Moses State Park.
It was perched in a tree about 100 yards in on the north side of the road.
There is a 40 mph sign right near the location. I spotted it from near the
information booth building. Good thing I did not dismiss it as a Barred Owl!

NO WEEKEND VISITS

A reminder that the home owner requests NO WEEKEND VISITS. If you are
looking at this and are subscribed to a different Listserv please pass
along the word so other people can continue do enjoy this bird during
appropriate hours.

"Hi Frank - As we discussed here are our guidelines:

We are OK with people coming to the house to look for the bird as long as
the following are respected: No weekend visitations as our kids are
outside all the time and the chaffinch is unlikely to be present during
this time frame. Monday - Friday with the earliest time to arrive being
7:30 AM. We have a large cul-de-sac next to our driveway where parking is
safe and ample. As you walk up the driveway please bear to the right
as soon as the lawn appears and make your way around the house to
the porch. This is the best viewing location and will prevent the
possibility of a birder coming up a different way and potentially scaring
the bird off. The feeders are in our back yard which is where the bird has
been observed multiple times. It typically comes in with the
White-throated Sparrows and juncos but has occasionally been observed
individually. The bird has been spotted in both the morning and early
afternoon hours. ... I am an avid birder and understand that many wish to
observe the Chaffinch but please respect these guidelines and our property
so that many can hopefully enjoy the bird while it remains here. Good luck.

Yes, this is a Troupial (Icterus icterus). It is the national bird of
Venezuela and is (as stated by Steve Hilty in his "Birds of Venezuela" - 2nd
edition) a commonly kept cage bird prized for its beauty and rich song.

Late this afternoon, I received a call from Erik Miller about a mystery
Oriole like looking bird that was found by Mary Normandia at Gerry Pond Park
in Roslyn NY. I got out to the area and took some documentation shots for
review. Erik later called and left a message indicating that he had
identified the bird as a Troupial (see the Birds of the West Indies) for
reference. I think Erik's ID is spot on. Here is a link to a few photos
posted on my blog.

Subject: [nysbirds-l] Troupial at Roslyn NY...

Hi all, just curious, has anyone seen Juncos yet? Or White-throated
sparrows?

I saw my first-of-season Juncos and White-Throated Sparrows this past
Sunday, in Falls Village, CT (in the northwest corner of the state). It was
a small, active flock of maybe 6-8 birds and one of the sparrows sang for a
bit.

I know it's not NY but since I've seen them further north, i'm wondering how
long it's going to be before we see them in the NYC/LI area.

Those birds mean winter's almost here chop the firewood!

Unfortunately, the Hooded Crow did NOT appear for me from 1:30 PM thru 5:00
PM today. (However, I did add 21 species to my Richmond County list.) At
least 5 juvenile BONAPARTE'S GULLS were present on the beach and 4 ROYAL
TERNS flew by at one point. I found it interesting that a FIELD SPARROW was
singing in this habitat as well.

The Hooded Crow continued to put in appearances this morning in the vicinity
of the previously
mentioned fisherman's parking lot. Although it was somewhat skidish, it was
seen repeatedly in and around the dead pine on the right side of the gravel
parking lot. A conversation with a park attendant who cleans the beach
behind the lot revealed that he has seen the bird frequently scavenging dead
fish and garbage all along the beach. Upon learning this my wife and I
walked the beach and were rewarded with a lengthy view of the bird flying
out over the water, almost to the far shore line before it turned and
returned to the wooded region adjacent to the gravel parking lot. Best of
luck if you go. This bird is attracting quite a bit of attention with
birders that I talked with traveling from as far away as Ohio and Illinois.

I completely disagree. AviSys is the easiest, most intuitive and powerful
software going. I’ve been using it for years and have only had a problem once
which AviSys technical support cleared up in a jiffy! I can’t imagine why John
is having a problem downloading from the AviSys web site? I’ve also never had

anyone out there can assist me, it would be greatly appreciated. please contact

if any average computer user, is looking for birding software, to manage

The marine forecast as of the last update is for very calms seas in the

good.

Our plan is to work the inshore areas that we normally just pass through for
Common Murre, Thick-billed Murre, and maybe even Black Guillemot, all of
which we've seen on past trips. The water is still fairly warm (well, warm
to an alcid) inshore so if we get out far enough, we might even have a shot
at Dovekie or Puffin. We'll be chumming along the way to keep gulls behind
the boat, and have a good shot at Glaucous, Iceland, and Lesser Black-backed
Gulls, and possibly Kittiwake. We can also expect more inshore species like
Gannets, loons, and waterfowl.

Visit our web site or contact us for more information or to sign up. If you
plan on taking the train to Freeport, let us know so we can arrange a rides
between the train station and the boat.

Hope to see you aboard.

at Dovekie or Puffin.
