While Rooks may have been eaten in the past, the rhyme in question wasn’t about Rooks. It was about LIVE birds (specifically named “Blackbirds” which are indeed the European or Common Blackbird, Turdus merula) which were placed in the pie ALIVE so that “when the pie was open the birds began to sing” (something you would be hard-pressed to hear a Rook do!!!) and fly away (something nestling Rooks would not be able to do either) to the amazement of the King. Approaching our government representatives is a good way to go but perhaps some press coverage of this event my make them think twice. I don't know any journalists in that area that would take up the story. Anyone else have any contacts along these lines. We applaud your respect for nature and the crow. The crow is meaningful. We believe in utilizing the animal for all its worth. It sounds as if you do not realize that crow can and has been consumed for centuries. I'm sure as anecdotal evidence you would recall 4 and 20 blackbirds baked in a pie. If you are looking at this and are subscribed to a different Listserv please pass along the word so other people can continue do enjoy this bird during appropriate hours. "Hi Frank - As we discussed here are our guidelines: We are OK with people coming to the house to look for the bird as long as the following are respected: No weekend visitations as our kids are outside all the time and the chaffinch is unlikely to be present during this time frame. Monday - Friday with the earliest time to arrive being 7:30 AM. We have a large cul-de-sac next to our driveway where parking is safe and ample. As you walk up the driveway please bear to the right as soon as the lawn appears and make your way around the house to the porch. This is the best viewing location and will prevent the possibility of a birder coming up a different way and potentially scaring the bird off. The feeders are in our back yard which is where the bird has been observed multiple times. It typically comes in with the White-throated Sparrows and juncos but has occasionally been observed individually. The bird has been spotted in both the morning and early afternoon hours. ... I am an avid birder and understand that many wish to observe the Chaffinch but please respect these guidelines and our property so that many can hopefully enjoy the bird while it remains here. RE: [nysbirds-l] off topic/ AviSys
I completely disagree. AviSys is the easiest, most intuitive and powerful software going. I’ve been using it for years and have only had a problem once which AviSys technical support cleared up in a jiffy! I can’t imagine why John is having a problem downloading from the AviSys web site? I’ve also never had a problem with that. John J. Collins Raritan, NJ <mailto:jjcb...@verizon.net> jjcb...@verizon.net "God desires that all the world be pure in his sight. Wow. Without these notices I would not know about these trips which I like to know about so I can see great birds in our local area! Please don't chase Paul off this list!! John J. Understand that it's a weather forecast, so they may be wrong, but right now it's looking pretty good. Our plan is to work the inshore areas that we normally just pass through for Common Murre, Thick-billed Murre, and maybe even Black Guillemot, all of which we've seen on past trips. The water is still fairly warm (well, warm to an alcid) inshore so if we get out far enough, we might even have a shot at Dovekie or Puffin. We'll be chumming along the way to keep gulls behind the boat, and have a good shot at Glaucous, Iceland, and Lesser Black-backed Gulls, and possibly Kittiwake. We can also expect more inshore species like Gannets, loons, and waterfowl. Visit our web site or contact us for more information or to sign up. If you plan on taking the train to Freeport, let us know so we can arrange a rides between the train station and the boat. Hope to see you aboard. -PAG -- Paul A.
