Re: [nysbirds-l] Nassau Dovekies

Closer to sunset the Dovekies reappeared at West End Jones Beach one pair in the fishermen parking area and another pair further out in the inlet. That pair was scoped from the dunes.Three razorbills swimming together also appeared in the dune area swimming slowly to the inlet. The dovekies dove a fair amount but we’re clearly visible when floating and resting.  A scope was required to get field marks.Sent from my iPhoneOn Dec 30, 2022, at 1:47 PM, Jennifer Wilson-Pines wrote:Jones inlet and point lookout channel being seen from end of Fisherman's roadOn Fri, Dec 30, 2022, 1:40 PM Eileen Schwinn wrote:Found earlier today by Ben B and reported by a small handful of others via eBird, a male Eurasian Wigeon is currently among a small flock of Mallard and Am Wigeon , east side of Long Creek.  Others have reported female as well.  Views with scope from small, cement bridge, Grand Ave, Mattituck.  Head North on Wickham from Sound Ave(route 48) to Grand Ave.

[nysbirds-l] Re: [nysbirds-l] Say’s Phoebe still present at Caumsett Suffolk County

2021-10-31 Thread John Mora
Say’s is still at bull area but ranging farther seen also on tree north of run
and on posts lining wood edge fence in supplemental parking lot.

At least five Vesper sparrows near bull fence area often on fence foraging on
ground and landing in tree or roof top.

Patience was required for the phoebe today. Right now back in bull area.

Regards.

[nysbirds-l] West End Jones Beach - Guard Station

2021-10-05 Thread John Mora
This afternoon there were two Marbled Godwits on the sand bar along with one
adult Royal Tern. Nine black scoters in open water.

Large number of American Oystercatchers with lingering laughing gulls.

Mosquitoes were not bad along the water.

Re: [nysbirds-l] 3 King Eiders, point lookout, Nassau county

2021-04-08 Thread John Mora
Hi the two sub adult King Eiders remain at Pt Lookout - first jetty to the left
when coming down from 911 memorial. Three Harlequins there including one drake.
Two piping plovers & one purple sandpiper at western jetty. Female King Eider
was further west two jetties down.

Fair number of adult Common Eider drakes and fewer Long-Tailed ducks. Two red
throated loons.

Heading home we saw two Osprey at Jones Beach on road on the bay side as we
headed towards the Wantaugh Parkway.

Thanks Kevin.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Spotted Towhee (February 12)

2021-02-23 Thread John Mora
Towhee at park at paved path at bend where bird seed is scattered.

Seen twice in half hour period. Five fox sparrows white throats and two pairs
of feuding cardinals at the spot.

The paved path is near soccer fields. We approached it from the main road at a
stop sign and crosswalk. Another gentleman parked in the soccer field parking
lot. More slushy snow to walk through if you park in the soccer field.

Thanks all.

2020-10-25 Thread John Mora
Three immature White Crowned Sparrows at pond trail on right under pine tree.
Fifty plus Swamp Sparrows. Two Savanah Sparrows near fence tennis court side,
a few juncos, thousands of white throats and resident song sparrows. Three
brown creepers viewed from car at pond. Two palm warblers one Harrier flyover.
Immature yellow crowned night herons.

Flickers and Robin migration also.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Birdingwatching In the Time of Covid-19.

2020-05-29 Thread John Mora
We are in Bellmore on Long Island a few miles in from the bay. This spring We
had Carolina wrens next in our garage - it was a great month to watch them in
our yard despite the poop on my lawn mower. Once they fledged they vacated our
yard in mid May. Only heard them sing a couple of times since.

A pair of mallards flew in and landed in our backyard. They flew off quickly
when our dog noticed them- we have no water feature in the yard. It was
surrealistic.

In April we had turkey vulture fly over. In May one great egret flew by low.
We have chimney swifts - three- over our house this past week.

Migrants were rare in our yard this spring- a few pairs of goldfinch, one
catbird and one male norther oriole. Heard a myrtle or two.

Our infrequent birding trips have been to Cow Meadow in Freeport where we can
maintain social distance. Usual suspects there including yellow warblers,
glossy ibis, yellow crowned night herons and boat tailed grackles. We tried
birding in Tackapausha in Seaford but too many people, most without masks.

My best.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Black-bellied Whistling Ducks Continue at Cow Meadow (Nassau Co.)

2019-05-21 Thread John Mora
An hour ago four ducks were on grass sleeping. Walk on path on the bay side of
the lake past - east- past the first turn - look to town side - they were near
edge of grass close to lakeside vegetation.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Calverton Red Crossbill info

2019-03-30 Thread John Mora
Thank you for excellent directions.

We arrived shortly after twelve - and after walking in on a well maintained
path - we saw a pair, male and female together, with female collecting nesting
material and later siting high up in a pine on a half built nest. Male sat in
open fairly high up for twenty minutes.

Later two pairs - one male clearly approaching adulthood - were in the open in
a dead tree with one male calling excitedly.

Great views, thank you again.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Extralimital Boreal Chickadee in NJ -yes

2019-03-03 Thread John Mora
Hi - the Jersey boreal chickadee still at visitor center feeder today, coming
in about every thirty minutes for a peanut. Pine Siskin and red breasted
nuthatch also at feeder.

At nearby hawk watch platform at the reservoir’s dam, there was one hen
Barrow’s goldeneye, many common goldeneye, good number of northern pintails
and over 1000 snow geese in flight then settling down.

Worth the long drive despite threatening winter storm.

Re: [nysbirds-l] NYS eBird Hotspots: Recent Changes to wikipages

2017-01-22 Thread John Mora
BTW the golf course has put up "no trespassing" signs on all paths leading to
the links. These were not there two weeks ago.

We stayed on pavement near the club house and after ten minutes a waiter came
out to ask us what we were doing. We explained we were looking for a rare
goose and were not going to walk into the links and he did not object to our
scoping the birds from there.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Barnacle Goose present at St. Charles Cemetery

2017-01-22 Thread John Mora
Having seen this post we rushed to the cemetery but all geese where gone.

Located pair of common ravens in tree in the Barnacle area. Revamps called,
preened flew to a telephone pole and finally flew off towards the Southern
State.

At the private golf course next to Pinelawn we saw the Ross goose and the
immature snow goose next to each other. This was near the southern pond and
after 15 minutes these geese joined 40 Canada geese and walked over the
hillside.

Not many geese at Belmont Lake - no Barnacle.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Townsend's Solitaire YES and Ross Goose

2017-01-14 Thread John Mora
Good evening.

The Townsend Solitaire was active and visible in the afternoon. It was alert
and stood often at top of pines and telephone lines. We observed it eat a
juniper berry. Number of times it defecated indicated a well fed bird. Good
news for its likely survival.

The Sound near the Solitaire revealed small rafts of White Winged Scoters, one
Common Loon and one Red Throated Loon.

We were at at Belmont Lake State Park at 10:30 AM and the Barnacle Goose was
not present. Most Canada geese were gone. We saw One pair of Common
Mergansers and 6 Ring Necked ducks. Coots remain.

The private golf course near the cemetery had large numbers of grazing Canada
Geese and one adult Ross Goose. Pines near links entrance had many Red
Breasted Nuthatches. We had three in one glass in the parking lot. No
Barnacle, alas, again.

Cheers.

Tundra swans were still on the lake this afternoon. Flew in to the far side
near large white building.

This nice find was supplemented by an impressive number of common mergansers.

We spotted a female hairy woodpecker on a nearby tree as we prepared to leave
the lake overlook.

Thanks, David.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose at Hendrickson Park, Nassau- Red Headed Woodpecker

2016-12-23 Thread John Mora
Goose was on the far shore opposite from the tennis courts - tame and resting
and in the water very close to the path.

Woodpecker was active and vocal. Walk on the tennis court side heading north
along bike path past bridge. A number of houses up there is a brighter yellow
house. The red headed woodpecker is in that general area. Bird's head is
turning red...

We also saw the tamest immature red tail hawk. It was on the ground with dead
squirrel in its talons - people jogged five feet from the bird. Who was not at
all stressed by humans.

Also present of note: one immature yellow bellied sapsucker, a great blue
heron and a active belted kingfisher. Kestrel flew fast through the scattered
trees then flew past the park and landed on top of the high school dome.

No cackling goose for us today, alas.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Ash-throated Flycatcher, Lido Beach Park West

2016-12-04 Thread John Mora

Flycatcher was still in the same western area mid afternoon.

This bird is very flighty and is often hidden. Seen twice flying off the park
inland to two pines beyond red storage hut adjacent to last large gravel
parking lot.

Northern oriole is still present as well as a flock of house finches and the
scattered red breasted nuthatches in the pines.

On the beach there were 10 dunlin mixed in with 25 sanderlings. Also seen was a
tight knit group of a dozen horned grebes performing synchronized swimming and
diving. Also present were a large number of red throated loons and fewer
common loons, often five birds in the glass. One adult cormorant flew West far
out likely double crested.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Jones Beach

2016-10-29 Thread John Mora
My wife and I birdied for two hours at West End commencing at 3 PM.

Nice sized groups of foraging yellow rumps. One Blue Headed Vireo. One Royal
Tern fly over. Two easily spooked White Crowned Sparrows along roadside
heading towards police station. Only one Red Breasted Nuthatch. Some picture
perfect White Throats mixed with on territory Song Sparrows.

One flock of flickers and a steady slow stream of migrating Tree Swallows.
Male Harrier and one quick darting accipiter. A few Robins and 3 Red Winged
Blackbirds in high flight.

We always appreciate seeing Brandt. There were about 18 Black Bellied plovers
and two Oystercatchers.

One Phoebe earlier at Fishing Pier earlier in the day. Also Ruddy Turnstones
foraging on the pilings under the Pier.

We saw a perched Merlin atop dead pine near the Pier when heading home.

Hi - the bird was still there at far end of pond at sunset.

Very active.

Thanks Deborah for the trailblazing roadmap.
