I am planning to use it with the SuperMicro SC836BA-R920B 3U case and
Supermicro X10DRi-T4+ motherboard to build a storage server.

I have another OmniOS system, as well as a Sun SPARC Solaris 10

What is a "zfs subfolder"? Are you refering to a distinct zfs
filesystem? If so, the problem could be that the software you are
using only backs up filesystems and does not recurse into other
filesystems.
