Aha, found them. The clue was that noise reduction is only enabled at 1/4 of a second and slower. I just looked at a TIFF shot at 1/20th of a second, and there are a number of hot pixels that match what my prior images had uncovered. The hot pixels disappear at 1/4 of a second, indicating noise

if Vuescan doesn't support Digital ICE and you not shooting Kodachrome or conventional BW, you are in for many more hours in front of Photoshop fixing dust that would have been removed automatically. E-6 and C-41 films are hugely more scannable when using hardware dust and scratch removal.

I've been checking daily since late May. This morning neither BH nor Adorama had it listed. This afternoon Adorama listed it at U.S. $640. That's lower than I expected. Since the lens assembler in Vietnam may soon go on holiday, I pounced and ordered it. Adorama's system took the order. I

it does remove something else. if you print 11x14 and larger and hold the prints very close, you will see a difference. that difference isn't worth it to me. i would rather shoot and stitch a multirow panorama if i need the detail at larger sizes. i got my money's worth out of my Coolscan 4000ED

skill and ability are foremost, but if you have that already, the equipment counts a huge amount. i just read Arthur Morris' book on bird photography. net summary - if you've got the skill, not getting exactly the hardware needed to do the job is a waste of your time. you'll make up for the cost

I don't know how this works exactly, but according to what I've read scanners that have the hardware to support digital ICE have some other options for cleanup in Vuescan supposedly using the same type of technology. I've not been able to try this yet since none of my scanners have the hardware
