The lens is pretty awful on digital (lots of chromatic aberration and

Hi
I have just acquired - and have been using - a late version SMC 500 4.5, I also have
an SMC-A 400 5.6. The telephoto effect and the compression of planes is much more
noticeable with the 500mm lens. The manual diaphragm is a slight drag but not too bad
with an auto camera. I focus at f4.5

I agree that #01 is the best. I can't tell you how delighted I am to
see really fine images done with a thread mount Spotmatic of similar vintage

I also appreciate your information on how you scanned the negatives.

ps you can share? Is there a special filter I should use,
or would a polarizer or ND filter be sufficient? I'm planning on using
my K 500mm f4.5, so I'll probably need to special order a large enough
filter, and I'll need to do that soon.
Thanks,
John

I used to have a screw mount 500 f4.5 SMC Takumar that a previous

inexpensive tool - the lens made colors p

G'day Mark,
Those are all excellent shots. I really like the colours in "Blue

The guy also had a SMC K 500mm f4.5 with original case that could only
be fairly described as MINT. That is a BIG lens with an objective lens
nearly the size of a SAUCER.

I shot lots with this lens but replaced it with the A* 400 f2.8, which with
teleconverters is much sharper, though it can burn you in the Bokeh dept. It
should be noted than the A*400 cost a whole order of magnitude more than the

The stop down aperture was not a major issue once you got used to it.
This was a very high resolution lens, capable of producing great
results on film, but it has a major degree of chromatic aberration. I

The lens is pretty awful on digital (lots of chromatic aberration and
very soft) so I don't have any pics from the Q7 worth sharing. I just
thought it would be funny to see.

One of the nicest things about the 500 f4.5 was that it had a notch and
peg style sight on it which made it very easy to frame up subjects.
