PESO: Stealth Fantail

2016-05-27 Thread David Mann
We had a black fantail regularly visiting our garden at the end of summer.
Apparently about 5% of South Island fantails are black. He usually turned up
with a pied (conventionally-coloured) friend.

The lighting in our garden isn't good and I don't have the option of cranking
up the ISO, and with a black subject it was a bit of a struggle to get a photo,
so this blurry blob is the best I could do.

Just realised I should call him Frank...

Cheers,
Dave

Re: OT - Lots of water and tornado touchdown

2016-05-27 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Thanks to all for the kind words!
A follow-up:

What I didn't know last night is that apparently there was yet
another tornado touchdown about 27 miles south of where we live.
Driving to Houston this morning, first, I've noticed some large uprooted
trees. Then I saw several houses with damaged roofs and walls, and then a
few industrial-type, 2-stories buildings with the second floor mostly
missing. Then I saw a trailer portion of an 18-wheeler turned over (it was
parked in the yard of one of the businesses.
And those damages were on both sides of the highway, spread over at least
1 mile. That means that tornado was either moving along the highway or
crossing it in a diagonal function.
This is a major, heavily traveled, divided freeway with two lanes in each
direction and 75 mph speed limit. I wonder what was going on with the cars
that were on it when the tornado went through...

Unfortunately, I had no time to even slow down for taking any photos, -
had to be in Houston for an appointment. IF the weather will not be too
bad, I'll try to take a few shots on the way back.

Yet another observation this morning: lots of areas are severely flooded.
There was a large plot of land next to the 290 freeway on the outskirts of
Houston with a sign "Land for sale". I thought that a good joke would be
if someone attached across that a temporary sign: "Water for sale".

 Darren Addy Fri, 27 May 2016 06:38:40 -0700 wrote:

Thanks for the report Igor. 8 miles is plenty close for a tornado to

Darren: I've mentioned this ones last year, - 20 years and 1 month ago,

blocks away, - in Urbana, IL:

FSF The last of the lenses

2016-05-27 Thread Bill

Now with somewhat lowered prices.

SMC 21mm LTD $250.00

SMC 35mm LTD $300.00

SMC 40mm LTD$175.00

SMC 70mm LTD $325.00

I'm not fire selling them, but I do want them to move.

Canadian dollars, and I am willing to entertain reasonable offers,
though I think these prices are quite reasonable..

I am the original owner of all of them.

They will come with their original hoods, and both front and rear lens
caps, though I will not guarantee that the rear caps are original. I
might have to send one or two out with knock off caps.
They all work, I live in a dry climate, so fungus is not an issue, all
have normal amounts of dust internally. They have all been gently and
quite lightly used and have not been abused.

Lenses are sold on an as is basis, I guarantee that they work properly
when boxed for shipment. All sales are final.
Shipping will be at the buyers expense, I will ship at actual cost
using buyer's preferred conveyance, and at buyer's risk.

Paypal is a suitable means of payment, and funds must be received in
full prior to shipment.

Replying to this email indicates acceptance of my terms of sale.

Nice work, Dan! The more abstract ones work best for me.

Stairwell #1 is just about perfect. The warm sandy tones in this
colour rendition are great.

Were it mine, I'd go straight to b and lots of contrast. It's
perfect for that treatment I think.

Re: OT - Lots of water and tornado touchdown

2016-05-27 Thread Darren Addy
Thanks for the report Igor. 8 miles is plenty close for a tornado to one's
home. A National Weather Service forecaster that I know in Dodge City, KS
is also a storm chaser/photographer and this week is his "Chase-cation"
with some buddies. They knew that Tuesday's action would be right close to
Dodge City, KS. He joked on Facebook that morning that they would just sit
and sip cold drinks on the deck and watch a 3/4 mile wide tornado in his
backyard. That was rather prophetic, as it turns out that there were at
least a dozen separate tornadoes in the Dodge City area on Tuesday. He
reported that one was just 4 miles from his house and when that one
occluded and a new one formed, the new one was 2 miles from his house.
Yowza.

The National Weather Service office in Dodge City tweeted a photo taken
right out of their office window of a nice tornado on the ground.
