On a point of grammar, the collective noun for cormorants is not 'flock' - we
say 'a mess of cormorants', and 'a shag-bag'.

Usually the tripods in thrift stores aren't worth the postage to mail

With all the money I saved not having to replace a lost tripod and head,

And I agree with Ann about that B portrait: it stands on its own.

I know that type of challenging light quite well: it is very popular in the
blues and jazz/swing music/dance community. So, I appreciate the

challenges and the outcome.

Now, Ann's comment about purple people eaters raised in my mind the old
debate about how the photos reflect what we see/saw in real life.

When we have an incandescent light and yellowish faces, we are trying to
compensate for that yellow cast (filters and probably some film processing in
the era of film photography, or color balance for digital).

But the people do look under that light as if they had jaundice.
It's just that our brain corrects/compensates for that in real time.

So, the question is: should or should we not compensate for that
while taking the photos (filters/color balance/...) or in post-processing?
The same question applies to recording a video.
After all, in many situations (these days, when different color lights are
available), - people purposely choose "warm light" (2700K) to create

a certain mood.

And now, for the purple/coquelicot/smaragdine/mikado/glaucous/fulvous lights:
They do create a certain atmosphere. So, why we do not get shocked seeing
those glaucous faces in the room, but many people get the reaction like that
of Ann's by any face color short of sarcoline in the photos? Those colors in
the photos should reflect the "real" look of that room and people in it and
convey that mood. Right?

Cheers,

Igor

PS. I am not being critical of Ann's reaction, I understand it.
Rather, I am thinking out loud about the interesting effect our
brain plays on us. These thoughts are also a followup to the
previous conversation about "truthful" images in photography.

PPS. Strange color names? Look them up! ;-)

The super saturated light from LEDs can make photography very challenging.

Hi All,

Asahi Man (a reputable Pentax-insider information leaker on dpreview)
indicated that Pentax has a big focus on FF cameras and lenses in the
upcoming year (which is apparently a big 100 anniversary year for
Pentax, or, more exactly, Asahi Kogaku Goshi Kaisha).

In his recent posts, I haven't seen any mentioning of the APS-C line.
The last flagship APS-C camera (K-3ii) was released 3.5 years ago
(Apr. 2015), about 1.5 years after K-3 (October 2013).
I might be wrong, but it seems to me (and it looks like some other
people, including at least some PDMLers were of the same opinion) that
KP, announced in January 2017 (more than 1.5 years ago) was positioned
a bit below K-3, even though it is clearly above the "second-tier"
(K-50, K-70) product line, and its release is in the time line
corresponding to the flagship line. (Actually, my memory is a bit
vague about the parameters that made KP inferior to K-3.)

(You can see the summary of DSLR production years e.g. here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentax_cameras#K_Series_(Digital)  )

This suggests that Pentax probably somewhat lowered their top APS-C
line in favor of the FF line, and the next APS-C body when and IF it
comes out (which I'd expected to happen before the holiday season, but
it didn't happen, - so, maybe in spring of 2019), - it might not have
all the desired features that K-3/K-3ii had.

The impression I've got is that APS-C cameras might no longer be a
priority for Pentax R, and Pentax will just continue some
incremental releases in this area.

I realize that its a pure speculation at this point, but I was curious
about the thoughts of other PDMLers on this issue.

Cheers,

Re: What do you think about the future of Pentax "flagship" APS-C-camera line?

2018-11-14 Thread P. J. Alling
I would agree except, they can't really afford to give up any ground.
Pentax is known, as far as it is known, for having one of the best, if
not the best line of dedicated APS-C lenses, many like the limited line,
of extremely high build quality.

The K-1 is needlessly large compared to the K-3/5/P cameras, if you want
a relatively light compact DSLR, and you've got a bunch of DA limited
primes, telling people they live with a K-1 ff camera in crop mode at
15mp, and selling for 1 1/2 to 2 times the price of a 24mp, APS-C body
will drive prospective users to someone who makes what they want.

Ricoh's APS-C flagship doesn't have to have any thing near the
specifications of say a Nikon D500, but Pentax has to have at least be a
serious, contender to the N7xxx.

There are enough rumors of Pentax' eminent demise, not having a viable
APS-C flagship, with at least some actual improvements over the K-3II
will not help.  There needs to be a Pentax APS-C flagship just to remain
viable in the minds of the buying public. (Let's not get started on
advertising and distribution, that's another story).

I might be wrong, but it seems to me (and it looks like some other
people,
including at least some PDMLers were of the same opinion) that
KP, announced in January 2017 (more than 1.5 years ago) was positioned
a
bit below K-3, even though it is clearly above the "second-tier" (K-50,

K-70) product line, and its release is in the time line corresponding
to the
flagship line. (Actually, my memory is a bit vague about the
parameters that made KP inferior to K-3.)

(You can see the summary of DSLR production years e.g. here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentax_cameras#K_Series_(Digital) )

This suggests that Pentax probably somewhat lowered their top APS-C
line
in favor of the FF line, and the next APS-C body when and IF it comes
out
(which I'd expected to happen before the holiday season, but it didn't
happen, - so, maybe in spring of 2019), - it might not have all the
desired features that K-3/K-3ii had.

The impression I've got is that APS-C cameras might no longer be a
priority for Pentax R, and Pentax will just continue some incremental

releases in this area.

I realize that its a pure speculation at this point, but I was curious
about the thoughts of other PDMLers on this issue.

The k-1 works just fine as an aps camera. With their limited resources it would
make sense to only have one flagship.

Re: OT: Best Selling Beer Brands

2018-11-14 Thread Paul Stenquist
No problems. The stats on the Budweiser site are U.S. only, where Bud Lite is
the top seller. The list is worldwide, and only sales of the American Budweiser
are included under the Budweiser name. Europeans and Aussies don’t like to
admit it, but the bland Bud sells well internationally. It’s not good beer, but
ice cold on a hot day it’s refreshing. More importantly, it drinks like water
but intoxicates like most other mid-alcohol beers, so it’s a favorite of bar
crowds who like to get hammered in a hurry.

Re: Camera not reading lenses: what could be the reason?

2018-11-14 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Thank you, John, Larry, and P.J, for your responses.

Cleaning/inspecting contacts and deep-power-cycling didn't help.
Upon coming home and inspecting the camera mount carefully, I could not
see any visible problem with the contact.
Besides displaying "F--", the camera refuses to do any operation that
requires the lens. (I.e. no shutter activation, etc.) So, I suspect, it is
not just the "A" contact, but something more, probably happened to the

main board.

Argh...
Now, I am considering my options: trying to repair this camera, getting
a K-3, or even a K-1 (most likely used). This "forced" upgrade was
not planned or budgeted...

Any ideas on what could be the culprit and what I can try "in the field"?

On of the members, Karin van Zyl, recently posted this amazing once in
a lifetime Lion Cub photo taken in the Pilanesberg Game Reserve. It is
currently the Banner Photo on Facebook & will be featured in a local
travel magazine "Weg" in January.. Most of the members photograph
nature in one form of another. Still many film adherents too!
