Re: ACR Enhanced Noise Reduction Photos

2023-04-22 Thread Larry Colen
I used the latest LRC to process a bunch of photos I did of a friend’s CD
release/birthday party.

I basically did the processing the day before I moved, so I just narrowed the
sets down to “proof” level. One of my final steps was to do a mass application
of noise reduction. Some photos (wide angle) were taken with the K-1, the
tighter shots were taken with the K-3 III.

They were mostly bracketed in Tav, basically getting me two frames with an
under exposed frame as insurance against blown out highlights.

These basically show what half assed application of the new LR noise reduction
does.

These were mostly K-3 III
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/albums/72177720307556130

These were mostly K-1
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/albums/72177720307553706

It seems to do a pretty good job.

These don’t show cutting edge, max performance, just how it works going through
a bunch of stuff quickly.

At some point I hope to go back and clean up the best ones, but I’m currently
400 miles from home and m good computer.

I have a lot of pics I shot at 51200 when I was photographic tavern pool

I disagree. I use LR almost exclusively, but if at any time I needed/wanted to
use Photoshop, I can download it, use it for what I need/want, and delete it to
save disk space. LR with a perpetual license was about $129 retail list, often
discounted to $90, and was updated about every 18 months with the update
costing $25-50. Photoshop was about $400 and updated on a similar schedule for
about $200.

So call it six years I'd been using LR perpetual license. That's one purchase
and three upgrades or about $190 or so. If Photoshop, it was about $900-1000.
If both, add them together.

Now you get both for $120/year, regardless of which you want to use or how
much, and you get updates about every two months.

So one or both now price out to the same $720 over six years, which is a bit of
a cost increase for the only LR user and a significant reduction for the PS or
PS+LR user.

Nothing forces you to do an update … you can continue to use an older version
as long as you want as long as you keep paying the monthly. You do have to keep
paying the monthly, however. This is probably a good thing even for you, not
only for Adobe, since it implies that Adobe might remain in business and have
software that works and that you're accustomed to available for your use when
the Pentax K XXXVI ships. ;)

The first image is the raw file at whatever defaults Lightroom opened it

The second is with Denoise used, no other changes.
I left a small amount of noise in to give the skin some texture. If you
don't it starts to look waxy very quickly.
I did have to save the original at a lower quality setting to keep the file

Ransomware is what Adobe has been called since they went to the
subscription service. It's an unfair pejorative.
If you stop paying for Photoshop, then it stops working.
If you stop paying for Lightroom my understanding is it keeps working in a
read only mode. You have access to your files with Lightroom adjustments,
and you can export them with adjustments but you can no longer use any of
the editing or other functions such as Import, or resave the file.
If you have files stored in their cloud service (I don't), and stop paying,
you can no longer upload files and you have a full year to download them or
otherwise deal with them before they are no longer available.

There has been a lot of misinformation being disseminated regarding the
Adobe subscription service.
It's not as bad as it's made out to be.
I'm renting the use of both Lightroom and Photoshop. I believe it is
costing me less this way than the cost of upgrading to a new version every
couple of years which I tended to do to keep Adobe Raw up to date with my
camera, which also seemed to change every couple of years, usually soon
after the most recent Camera Raw update.

Mmm. That's not correct. I could stop using LR tomorrow and not lose anything
except my un-completed edits. It's a matter of both workflow and policy.

- When you edit metadata in LR, if you save to disk occasionally (like you
should) the metadata and any editing parameters are stored in a sidecar file
with each raw format image or embedded in the image itself if the image is DNG
or JPEG format.

- When you complete a rendering in LR, you should export it as a finished
image. This wraps together all the image edits as well as any metadata you've
annotated the image with and creates a new file will all that information
completely outside the LR environment. Any image processing app that opens JPEG
or TIFF output would be able to display exactly what you did, and all the
metadata annotation, that was created with LR.

AND if I were to decide a year later that I'd like to use LR again, just
re-open the database with a newly downloaded version of LR and everything will
pop right back into place.

Just the ability to access the work that you’ve done, and make updates later.

For people who use photoshop $10/month is a great deal. For people who only
use lightroom, it’s not such a good deal, as much or more as we were paying for
annual upgrades, and we simply lose the ability to continue using an older

Hmm. A $90 app that requires a multi-thousand dollar investment in higher
performance computing equipment isn't really my idea of a good deal. ;)

My raw image library has been stored on fast, locally-connected USB3 (since
USB3 came out) spinning and SSD media. And I have the top of the line 6-core
Intel-i7 3.2Ghz Mac mini with 64G RAM and a 2T SSD internal drive where the app

The trouble with the shot of the Bruges is that it can only be taken
from the top of another ferry, so you'd have to go to England and back
for that. And with the mess at Dover which is getting worse by the day I
don't see us doing that any time soon.

Re: ACR Enhanced Noise Reduction

2023-04-22 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Ralf, I'm glad ON1 is working so well for you.

I tested it pretty thoroughly some time back and found that it was near to
unusable for my work. It seems to never stop processing and be finished with a
job, no matter how small the number of files I gave it to work on. After a
month of trying to use it, I gave up and erased it on my system.

I had similar experience trying to use Capture One, which some other folks I
know never cease to extol the benefits of … I have tried to use it several
times over the past 10 years and simply cannot get the hang of it. Just
importing image files into it seems horrendously over-complicated and prone to
making errors.

For the moment, I pay the $10/month fee for LR Classic and Photoshop, haven't
bothered to even install Photoshop. LR Classic does an excellent job, every
time. Such it is, eh? :)

Re: ACR Enhanced Noise Reduction

2023-04-22 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
The latest update of LR Classic incorporates this "AI noise reduction" as well.
I'll have to go backwards in time to find some older photos that need it, that
I have already processed in older versions of LR and saved as TIFFs, so see
what difference it makes.

In general, none of my current cameras produce files that have any problems
with noise. I don't think I've touched the noise reduction sliders with any of
my photos for a couple of years now, at least. My more usual adjustment is to
sharpening … where I find LR Classic tends, with some cameras, to over-sharpen
by default.

All major image processing software appears to have some AI based
denoising function nowadays.

As some of you might know, I've ditched Adobe's ransomware in favour of
ON1 Photo RAW and its denoising never ceases to amaze me. Best of all,
it doesn't only work on RAW files from digital cameras but also on TIFF
files with analog film data and the results with scans of 25 year old
400 ISO stock are incredible.

Whatever I throw at it, noisy stuff from my *istDS or grainy colour
film, I've got a bunch of shots that I'd never have published otherwise.

The same goes for DxO Photolab 6 but sadly it only works with RAW files,
not scans.

Here's an example from ON1. ISO 400 colour negative made even worse by
having it processed in a 1-hour-minilab, scanned after 25 years.
