It's called 'Parade Slant' taken a while ago. The interesting thing is that
every shop in this parade is now closed; a developer has bought it. Must
have been tough on the shop in the middle (Empire), which had a major re-fit
and new front about 18 months ago - I'm sure that if they had known leases
were not going to be renewed as they came up, they wouldn't have done it.

Must have been a 'senior moment' ...

While I did prepare an image, and even uploaded it to my personal 'pug'
gallery, it seems I failed to actually submit it.

For the curious, here it is, 'triple tilt':

Taken just over a week, ago, K1 with the Sigma 50-500mm ...

It's small in all the ways to make it /look/ smaller. But it's footprint is

The people repeating the hype of that it's ultra compact seem to be those
who've no actual experience with the Pentax APS-C flagships since the K-7.
Even the K-3 is essentially the same size.

Ricoh has made the right shoulder of the camera smaller by shaving off some
of the top plate, and giving it a smaller battery so that they could have
interchangeable plastic grips, but if you compare the cameras here
the K-5 takes up /less/ actual
space in all dimensions.

True the K-P weighs a bit less, but not enough that you'd actually notice.

It will probably feel smaller in your hand, but not necessarily in a good
way. I've never had used a K-3 but the K-5 has about the best grip I've
ever had on a camera. I've heard it said that the K-3 is even better.

Now that I think about it the K-S1 was pretty much an exercise in design
which satisfied no one, aimed at a market segment they had fundamentally no
understanding of. The same team looked at the criticism of that design and
actually took it to heart. However now they've gone too far in the other
direction aiming at a different market segment they also have no fundamental
understanding of.

You win PJ;

I only own one (so what do I know) and have use several hundred's shots on

I knew this camera was onto a loser straight away because I like it.

I have changed mine to the largest grip and it still isn't great. My feeling
is that they should ditch the small grip and upsize all of them, so you get
a M, L & XL grip. My all black model does not have construction gap issues.

Yes, I agree with nearly all of his review (I think this guy does good
reviews in general) but he seemed to expect miracles from the high ISO which
is bound to be grainy. My feeling is that most here would not use most of
these images.

Here's the thing; tonight I needed to take pictures of a local bus service
after dark of the last day of operation with operator 'x', before operator
'y' takes over tomorrow with different vehicles. The KP took them at a high
but usable ISO at 1/100th of a second. The K3 I had with me wanted 2 seconds
- all of the pictures I had to take quickly by hand and without a tripod. I
think Pentax called it a camera for snapshots; at high ISO you're not going
to be putting A3 prints on your wall. For someone like me who needs a record
of things taken at night, which until now I haven't been able to get, it's
game changer. No doubt ten years from now major improvements will have been
made.

There are many short comings with this camera, and I would have much
preferred it a K3 size (that should be a minimum standard size). It is a
niche market camera. You wouldn't be looking at this as a replacement for a
K5 for example - it's not an upgrade, it's a sideways step into a different
area.

Only the large grip works for me. Despite comments, it does what I wanted it

RE: K-1 first impressions and lens tests

My K-1 arrived last night. So far I've only been able to do some quick
checks with the older FA and third party lenses I have on hand, but
everything seems to work well with it. Some notes:

- Size: not as hefty as I was expecting, though still larger than the K3.
The 28-105 lens is pretty small and light, smaller than the DA 17-70 by a
considerable margin. That closes the gap a bit between K-1 + lens and K-3
plus lens.

- FA 20-35 f4 will definitely be usable. I've only done some basic shots
around the house and yard but the first impression is that it is very good
at f5.6 and f8, though with peripheral softness at f4.

- 1st gen Sigma 70-200 f2.8 mounts without issue and test shots are razor
sharp. If it holds up well in the flare dept it I'll be more than satisfied
with it.

- FA 50 f1.7 also looks fine - I get some CA with this lens wide open on the
K3 so still have to test that.

- Verdict is out on the Tokina SD ATX 400. I stepped outside to do some
brick wall tests and some crows showed up and mugged for the camera.
Results are not as crisp as I've gotten with this lens on the K3 but the
light was pretty bad, I was shooting hand held in a pretty stiff breeze and
the crows kept fidgeting.

Four Sample shots are here:

http://www.markcassino.com/b2evolution/index.php/k-1-imgp0001?blog=9

The first shot is image #1 taken with the camera, using the 28-105 lens,
uncropped.

The next three crow shots were taken with the Tokina ATX 400. Crow in the
tree is uncropped, the others were cropped about 50%.

that. I'm just pointing out that it's not particularly compact compared to

to be making a big deal over it.

The K-3 took a pretty big hit in battery longevity over the K-5 family with
the same battery. There seems to be a smaller hit taken with the KP with a
smaller battery, merely for the "appearance" of a smaller camera.

I'm not buying the hype about size, plus there's a lot of people who think
that keeping the same metaphor in camera controls is boring, but there's a
reason that Canon hasn't made a major change in it's camera body design in
unpteen zillion years.

If you pick up a Canon camera, and you've used an EOS built in say the last
20 years, you know pretty much know where everything is and how it works.

I've moved from a *ist-D in conjunction with a Ds, to a K20D, then to a
K-5II each time there's always been a serious period of adjustment. I
sometimes still find myself trying to press the green button on the K-5II
and end up pressing the exposure compensation button, and the K-5II has been
my primary camera for about three years now. I still occasionally shoot
with the K20D, and I have to get used to it all over again

__

I take your point on the size. The battery is a pain, and I'll have to order
another on Monday, as I can't swap them about.

I've not found swapping cameras about a problem, but I do use different

RE: Enablement

2017-02-25 Thread Malcolm Smith
P. J. Alling wrote:

Alright in the first two paragraphs I already have issues with this review.
First there are the incorrect terms, the reviewer confused mechanical with
manual (as in "manual shutter"), then there's the size issue.

The reviewer talks about it's compact size. Well go to Camera size and
compare it to the K-5II and the
K-3 there is no significant
difference in size! It will take up exactly the same room in your bag, and
if you use the deep grip, in your hand.

Hyping how much smaller it is than a K-3, then comparing it to a mirrorless
camera is foolish, unless it's a Panasonic DMC-GH3 and even that is about
30% lighter!

It's a lower spec K-3 crippled by it's smaller battery, with a K-1-ish UI a
slightly improved AF module, and all new battery grip, the one for the K-3.
Maybe it's high ISO performance is a bit better, or maybe not. But I'm not
excited about it. There are too many steps backward for the two steps
forward.

_

Having now held it, I can make a reply. My cameras live in the same bag
whilst I'm out, so in the bag it doesn't matter if it's a KP or K1 sized.
There seems to be a rush to make things smaller. The size reduction wasn't
the selling point to me, only the higher ISO capability. By making it
smaller the big trade off to me is the new battery and charger, which I
consider a negative. I like interchangeability.

Maybe there is a market for smaller cameras that I'm missing the point of. I
would still have happily bought the KP if it had been the size of the K3, or
indeed, a K1.

Anyway, that's as much as I can say about it until I've used it for a while
and learnt more about it. First impressions are that it will do the job I
wanted it too.

Pentax K-P

2017-02-25 Thread Malcolm Smith
It arrived as one of the last courier deliveries of the day, and as it has a
different battery and charger (not great but part of the 'make it smaller'
drive), I was forced to charge that, and it was dark by the time it was
fully charged.

It comes with the small grip attached - one Allen key bolt with Allen key
provided - and I'm not sure who will use the small, as my wife with small
hands found that grip too small. The camera is indeed smaller, but it is
well laid out control wise. With a small lens, a 40mm pancake maybe, it
would pass for a point and shoot from a small distance, and I think that
might work well for street photography, and the tilt screen is useful.

The different grips are a good idea, although as I have big hands the large
will be the only suitable grip for me. I wouldn't want the camera any
smaller.

However, this was all about the high ISO abilities to me. I attach two
photos, one of the box, and one I took indoors. So far, I've only taken 5
pictures with it, and so I have much to get used to with it. One of the
pictures I took outside at 204,500 ISO just to see in the dark to see if it
could get a moving car, and whilst the image looked like a surveillance
photo as it was so grainy, I was astonished to see the registration
number/license plate readable. The K3 wouldn't work on this at all - I
tried.

Again with the picture of my cat, I tried to make it as hard as possible for
the camera, with really low light, so I had trouble seeing her, a smallish
aperture, quick shutter speed and then processed and cropped the image in
Lightroom, to further stress the image. Obviously that's not a picture
you're going to use day to day, but for a hand held shot (where the K 3
wanted several seconds exposure), this opens up a new world for me. I'm
happy. I'll certainly be able to use a much higher ISO than I currently do
and be useable.

I think they've made a camera that suits me, but time will tell if it suits
anyone else. If it was a choice between a K3 (K3 II) or a K-P, it would be
an easy choice for the former. I'm therefore not sure if I was buying a
Pentax DSLR for the first time I'd even look at the K-P.

Enablement

2017-02-22 Thread Malcolm Smith
In the hope this one finally gets through, I've seen few posts about the KP.

The project I'm trying to work on involves me going out at dusk in low light
(an ongoing urban fox project), and whilst I don't expect any of the really
high ISO images to be useful, I was surprised at how good sample photos have
appeared. Anyway, with a very good part exchange deal on a very old but
working fine K100D, I pre-ordered one a week ago.

I have no idea if I'm buying into something good or bad, but the deed is
done. I'm told they arrive at the end of the month.

RE: OT: Diesels

2016-12-10 Thread Malcolm Smith
Steve Cottrell wrote:

Actually I agree with you Ralf.

The problem is that back in the 1980s and 1990s, here in the UK diesel was
pushed as the 'cleaner' fuel and hence was cheaper in price than petrol. the
government promoted diesel heavily and the car manufacturers followed suit
by making more of them.

Now we are seeing the true legacy.

It all boils down from the oil lobby and the car makers, simple as that.
Without the need to pander to oil-rich nations, we would all have been
driving battery, even hydrogen powered cars years ago. Instead we line the
pockets of certain nations who shall remain nameless but have lots of sand
and camels.

I need a big utility vehicle for work, but if I had a choice of a less
polluting method of propulsion, I would jump at it.
++

Some 20+ years ago, I was involved with retro fitting 'green' diesel engines
in a large fleet, along with new exhaust systems which made them quieter and
had increased particulant traps. You'd have probably seen them on the
streets of London, as they were large and red. Now in 2016, there are hybrid
diesel electrics and hydrogen vehicles being rolled out.

On a personal level, it's difficult to find a replacement for my Land Rover.
I need something which takes up to 9 people fairly often, tows a horse box
and is generally good with unmade roads in poor weather. I had no choice
other than to buy a diesel version, as they phased the V8 petrol out as an
option long ago, and having in the past had one, I couldn't live with 12 MPG
as an average - go off road and that looks good. I get twice that with the
diesel. I'd like, in a few years' time a Range Rover again, when I'll be
able to manage with less seating, but it's really too plush and will get
scratched in the lanes pulling into gaps in narrow lanes. I have a really
good dealer I've dealt with for 20+ years, and have no intention of swapping
makes. I'd also like a petrol version, but that will come down to
economy/how much I then use it, which may actually be more.

I also may be forced into buying a petrol version, depending how London puts
in place 'ultra-low emission' boundaries for diesel vehicles in the not too
distant future.

I've no objection to spending money on a decent battery - it's under a third

You use yours I presume daily; nowadays mine goes out twice a week as I've
replaced car travel with cycling/walking as far as possible (parking is a
nightmare). Td5's need a lot of battery juice to initially crank them over,
and the use I give mine, particularly when it's had a couple of days in the
cold without use, reduces battery life.

Yes but no experience of such cold operating conditions.

Despite the UK's reputation of a cold dreary place, the coldest winter
minima we would normally expect would be something like -8 to -12 deg C.
That's well within range of the winter diesel fuel supplies, so we just
don't have the starting issues.

I have to say that one thing I would invest in for operating in your temps
would be a Webasto (or similar pre-heating system). Is this what you mean by
'plugging in the block heater' ?) They can be operated remotely or set on a
timer. I would imagine the engine would start up pretty much instantly with
a warm block and the added advantage of a warm cabin.

I have a Ford 2.4 litre 4 cylinder engine in the Land Rover and it pretty
much just keeps plugging away. It's a 2012 model year and because of the
nature of my work it does spend time idling, but does not have the latest
anti-pollution spec fitted. It does have a re-map and larger intercooler
taking it from the 122 BHP to 180 BHP. After splitting the exhaust manifold
in two, I've now attached a chalk-board eraser underneath the gas pedal ;-)

As you are no doubt discovering, getting used to low-rev torque takes a
while but I would imagine the output from the Cummins is pretty amazing.
+++

My in-laws run a pre-heater for their Land Rover. It plugs in from an
electrical socket in the house and takes moments to remove. After a cold
night (not your cold but much colder than the worst London temperatures and
often with deep snow) it starts easily first time and gets to running
temperature in a few minutes. Living 400 miles south, I've no need for one
here but would not hesitate to use one if I lived there. My Land Rover has a
Td5 diesel engine, and it is very heavy on battery life, particularly over
cold winters if not used daily. They give up without warning and I replace
mine every three years. I haven't owned a petrol car in some years.

That's a trade-off I've found, I don't know where he falls on that balance.
Both reach and buffer size are alleviated by shooting in crop mode. Does
anyone on the list have a k70?

Interesting comments.

I'm happy in most respects for using the K3 & 55-300mm for horse events. Why
I'd prefer the K1 & DFA 150-450, apart from the extra megapixels, doesn't
really trouble me about capturing movement - it's light. The K1 performs
better at higher ISO, and some of the venues I go to, particularly in the
morning, can be bright sunshine on one side and really dark on the other.
They are often held in large indoor schools (although one side is often
without a wall, just roof supports) and photography is only often allowed
from one side, and of course often the side furthest from the action.

When taking pictures of horses in fields, even running around at speed, I'm
usually using a tripod, or leaning on a bale of something. The K3 is fine
for that and the reach of a crop sensor does me a favour.

Malcolm you did well to buy the 31 mm Prime - the best lens for Street

The Pentax 150-450 Zoom would have looked like a BAZOOKA on the K-1, scaring
a lot of people on the Streets.

As it is a DSLR is a slight disadvantage for Street Photographers because of
its size.

Happy shooting - post lots of photos please.
+++

Thanks Bipin. My choice was really between street photography and equine
photography - the need for the DFA 150-450. I figured I could hold out a
little while more for the longer lens, as I have the 55-300mm with a K3. I
don't really have anything suitable for street photography, other than a
zoom or a 50mm. I did consider the 21mm LTD but I want to slowly get FF
compatible lenses. The 31mm will push me out of my comfort zone, and is what
I need right now. I'm taking pictures in part, from too far away, or not
quite getting the composition right in camera.

I suspect I'll use it a lot on livery yards too, so a win win!

Street photography enablement.

2016-12-03 Thread Malcolm Smith
I've spent some time taking street photos again, always with a zoom and with
very mixed results.

The next lens I wanted to buy was the DFA 150-450mm, but I really wanted a
prime for street photography. The K1 warrants decent glass. I thought long
and hard, the Black Friday sale helped too, and I've gone for the 31mm LTD.
I've not owned a LTD lens before and I'm delighted after so long to finally
own one. I'm looking forward to seeing what I can achieve with this
combination, and I'm particularly pleased to have a prime lens again and use
my legs as the zoom.

Loads of expense just erecting platforms/scaffolding to do such work. I

Well ... it was also a play on the old Star Truck meme "Dammit Jim! I'm a
doctor, not a [insert job description here]."

I actually have nothing against lawyers, but lawyer joke are funny.

I understand full well the line from Shakespeare's Henry VI, Part 2 was NOT
a proposal for a good thing. It was a prescription for how the characters
were plotting to overthrow the government planned to implement their
tyranny. They expected lawyers to stand against them in their coup d'état.

FWIW, I tell blond jokes too, and I'm a natural blond.

And, yes Larry, they match.

... and musician jokes. "How do you know when a drummer is at your front
door?"

By the time those railings have to be replaced, the developer will have
