Re: 'Why I still shoot with Pentax'

2020-11-26 Thread Toine
I shoot Pentax because I have the stuff for more than 40 years (+ or -) and
I keep collecting more of the same (K mount). Looking through the
viewfinder of the MX got me hooked. The real question is why I still shoot
DSLR. That's because macro and long glass really needs a DSLR (aps c
please). Anything else is more practical, much lighter with mirrorless.
Q-S1, MX-1, even my samsung S9 shoots raw. Image quality is mind blowing
compared to technology 10-15 years ago. I will probably switch to one of
the mirrorless brands in the future because Pentax failed to continue the Q
line.

That said I blew my mind the last months with the KP, DA300, 100macro and
the 1.4 TC. Never ever will I try another brand and start the 40 year
search for perfection again, that would be biologically challenging.
I'm dreaming of an apc-c KP-super with a tilt screen!

It was just a few years ago I was traipsing all over Denali with it!

I'm holding on to my 250-600 for one last road trip, but after that
it will probably be up for sale.

But, as others have stated, I shoot Pentax because it works for me,
and switching to another brand would be expensive. I'm beginning to
wonder about switching to Olympus, though - every year it gets harder
and harder to carry a bag full of gear around (I think gravity is
getting stronger).

I've related my Pentax history before, but just in case anybody here
is interested:

With my first paycheck from my first job after graduating I took a
trip from Manchester to Leeds Camera Centre and bought myself a
Spotmatic II with the 50mm/f1.4 lens. This was the most expensive
purchase I'd ever made, but it was put into perspective by the
person ahead of me in line, who paid rather more than my setup cost
me for an accessory viewfiner for his Hasselblad ...
(This was in 1972 - a few months before the Spotmatic F came out)

In 1976 I switched to an MX as my primary camera. A couple of years
later I got a one-year assignment in New Zealand, so I stopped off
in Singapore on my outward journey and added an ME, an 80-200 zoom,
and a 28mm/f2.8 to the camera bag (plus a second 50mm/f1.4 - the sum
I'd budgeted for the upgrade went quite a bit further in Singapore!)

That MX served me well - I've still got it - but over the years I
picked up a Super Program (A lenses!), a PZ-1p (auto-focus) & an MZ-S.
I also made the mistake of comparing the results from my 80-200 zoom
and an A* 200/2.8, which opened another hole to throw money into.
By looking around on the used market I was able to replace my old
zoom with an FA* 80-200, and also added an A* 300/2.8 (which, with
the oddball F1.7X AF, gave me a very usable 500mm auto-focus lens).

Then came the digital revolution. Pentax were late to the party, but
I got one bit of good luck from that - some editors began to require
digital image submissions. Apparently one long-time Pentax pro shooter
made the switch to digital and sold off his Pentax gear. I was sitting
at my desk at work one day, and idly browsing the rec.photos.marketplace
newsgroup, when somebody made a joke posting about this 'real bargain'
to be had at Charlotte Camera - an FA* 250-600/f5.6 for 'only' about 40%
of street price (roughly 25% of list price) - still not exactly cheap!
This had always been my dream lens for motorsports photography, but
I'd never seriously thought I'd ever get one - they never came up on the
used market, and even the street price was way above my budget. But this
one was just inside the top end of what I could afford, so five minutes
later it was on its way to me.
As soon as the *istD came out I bought one. Over the years I moved to
a K10D, and later a K-5, plus the DA* 16-50, 50-135, and 60-250 lenses.

If you ask me, 'need' has very little to do with a fair number of Hasselblad
purchases.

That being said, IIRC the item being purchased was a 90-degree viewfinder
adapter.
If you've got the camera set up on a tripod at 5 or 6 feet above floor level,
it's very hard to look down onto a top-mounted ground glass screen.

When did you get that first Pentax, John?

In 1966, I went to the AF PX in DaNang to buy a camera. I had my heart set
on a Minolta 101, which my XO had and let me try. They were out of that
camera, but the clerk in the photography department showed me an Asahi
Spotmatic. He pointed out that Asahi Optical made the finest glass in the
world at that time, and that the Spotmatic was being sold in the US under
the Honeywell brand. I was sold, and never turned back.

Re: 'Why I still shoot with Pentax'

2020-11-25 Thread Ken Waller
Similar to my story.
A work friend loaned me his Spotmatic to shoot a race at Mosport, Canada.
Really enjoyed the experience. It was easy to handle and the controls were
logically placed IMO. I had been using a Voightlander folding viewfinder up to
that point. Locally Spotmatics were going for around $300 (in the Detroit
area) and somewhat cheaper south across the border in Canada. At the same time,
around 1969, a GI friend was in Nam and offered to get a Spotmatic for me and
bring it back when he returned to the states - I paid $98 USD for that one. It
was an Asahi Spotmatic, not the Honeywell version sold in the states.
Been with Pentax ever since. Having accumulated a numbers of Pentax lenses over
the years, I have no reason to switch brands.
I’ve participated in many photo workshop and tours and only once or twice did I
ever run into another participant shooting a Pentax.

Re: 'Why I still shoot with Pentax'

2020-11-25 Thread Alan C
In 2011 I was still shooting film (mostly ME Super at that stage) &
having the negatives digitised. The demise of the local photolabs
basically forced my hand. 2nd hand Pentax digital bodies seemed to be so
expensive I rather bought a special offer Canon 1000D and some EMF
adapters so I could use my Pk & M42 Pentax lenses. It worked well but
eventually became a pain with all the manual work & no AF. Eventually I
found a cheap K110D, later a K7 & finally a K5 with its much better
sensor. I kept 5 lenses & got rid of everything else. As a pensioner,
that lot will have to see me out. Quite good enough for me.

At that time, Asahi was making glass primarily for medical instruments, and
it was considered the best in that field. It was said that Zeiss was still
recovering from the effects of WW II, and that Asahi was, in the opinion of
many at that time (1966) equal or better than Zeiss in photographic glass
as well. The Asahi coatings were in particular said to make them superior
for photographic purposes.

I still use Pentax for the same reason - it still does the job for me. I
also appreciate the quality Pentax puts into its cameras. Over the past
couple of years I've taught a few landscape photography classes and that
has exposed me to other camera systems. Pentax stands out in several
ways - the image quality (especially at at high iso),  the quality of
the view finders, weather sealing, and the many sensor shift features
(IBIS, horizon correction, etc.) all come to mind.

I have a contrarian streak and don't mind not using a mainstream brand.
But I'm also not a brand loyalist - if something better comes along and
changing brands makes sense, so be it. For the time being, Pentax is OK
by me.

Lenses I got since acquiring the P30, P30T, MX (2x), Spotmatic (2x), K2,
*istD, K10D, K-5 and K-1 (all in my display cabinet and still working,
except the *istD) prevent me switching to another brand.
Though the K-5 is still OK, I would like to switch to higher resolution
APS-C for some use, so K-70 or KP are options, but not the future K-3 3
with its fixed screen.

The K-1 is such a complete and solid camera, so no need to replace it now.

Re: 'Why I still shoot with Pentax'

2020-11-23 Thread Rick Womer
My reason is related (but not limited) to age.

When my daughter (now in her mid-30s) was a toddler, she pulled my Mamiya-Sekor
SLR off a table, and it died.

I went to Philly’s best camera shop (Mid-City Camera, now long gone). They had,
in my price and feature range, a Nikon N2020 and a Pentax Super Program.

The Pentax was s far superior in design, construction, and handling that I
bought it. And them a couple of lenses, And then a couple more. And then a
second Super Program body (which I still have).

So when the world turned digital, I got an istD. Then a K10D (which my son just
replaced for the sake of video ability; my daughter-in-law still uses the
K10D). Then a K7 (for more megapixels and higher ISO), and then the K-5 that
I’m still using, for almost 8 years).

Oh, and the lenses… Oy. Way too many to replace.

Rick

uneasy about my K-3.

Then again, the idea of a complete change of system - camera, lenses,
batteries and all the rest of it - just doesn't appeal.

Tjee, I didn't know the KP has no IR remote control! Most Pentax SLR's
have it.
I use this all of the time with my K-1 on tripod and of course in
particular when focus stacking of mushrooms pics in this time of the year.
I bought another 10 euro Chinese shutter control because I always have
troubles finding that small Pentax one in my pockets.

available on the KP.
The KP has a tilt screen and the main reason I got it.

We already have Wifi with the Pentax O-something SD-card. The trouble is
that all these Wifi and Bluetooth links only have a reach of 5 or 6

I had high hopes and already saw myself taking photographs or making
