We're using common names, while Dan is referring to Taxonomic classification. Dedicated bird watchers know the scientific classification down to the sub-species, and can't understand why common names are good enough for the rest of us. Most people wouldn't know a Cathartes aura meridionalis from a hole in the ground, but if you tell them you've seen a Turkey Buzzard, they'll know what you mean right away. Re: Buzzard Pair/Hint of Fall
I don't think they have vultures in the UK. We don't have Common Buzzards in the U.S. The use of "Buzzard" for New World Vultures came from English colonization in North America. Seen from a distance, when they're soaring, the Black Vulture has a similar appearance to the Common Buzzard English colonists would have known. Where I grew up in the South-Eastern U.S., "Buzzard" was a common name for the Black Vulture. Turkey Vultures were called Turkey Buzzards. In any case, I really wish people wouldn't post such nice photos with the 150-450, since I simply can't afford one right now.
