My problem is that in Jersey we have the white breasted nuthatches:

Whereas yours appears to be a red breasted nuthatch:

Seriously, that is a great image. Incredible detail and pleasing color and
bokeh.

Nuthatches are indeed hard to photograph, and they often cling upside down
on the trunk of a tree.
This, however, looks like a black-capped chickadee, which is also hard to

I wouldn't say I prefer grain. I'm ambivalent. I almost always shoot in TAV
mode because the light varies greatly depending on where the birds perch. This
shot is in brighter light, and I used some flash fill. So much lower ISO than
the sparrow pic. No converter, handheld. Just for my personal amusement.

Re: PESO Nuthatch

Thanks a Larry, Most of the birds perch on tree branches before going to the
feeder, so I don't need to encourage it. The nuthatches are somewhat of an
exception, although I have occasionally gotten them on a tree as well -- upside
down, as is their normal stance.

I wonder if you could take some sections of tree trunk or log and hollow
out places to put birdseed, which wouldn't be visible from where you
shoot. That way it would show the birds sitting on what seem to be

Probably last bird photo for a while. I've got a couple of large music

2011-07-05 Thread Tim Øsleby
Thanks to all who looked and commented.

I do see your point Stan.
I did look for a vertical crop, but I didn't find one I really liked.
None of the solutions I came up with was dynamic enough to communicate
the life style of the bird. Always on the run, from one nut to
another.

So I concluded that this nuthatch needs to be horizontal.

Great detail, classic nuthatch pose. Very nice shot!
I would prefer a vertical framing just because these birds are so vertical
in their approach to life. But that is a minor quibble.

As someone who's only recently tried to capture birds, I really
appreciate what a wonderful shot that is! Wonderful feather detail,
interesting pose, very nice bokeh, well exposed and composed. I
really like the way the trunk and branch frames things.

All in all a terrific shot!

cheers,

Excellent, Tim. I'd drop the exposure a tad, but the detail and
background are great. And I really like the framing you got here too.
