I was asking owners of the CPS1 how they rate its performance with various
types of cylinders. I'm in touch with Mr. Levin.

Re: [Phono-L] 1A owners Model M question

2018-04-02 Thread Immortal Performances via Phono-L
Dear Steve:

I've never tried to attach the I-A mechanism my Opera.

To adjust height of raised Diamond A, "M'" or "L" reproducers on an Opera
or Amberolas I-A, I-B or III I've sometimes found it necessary to tweak both
the lift supporting the reproducer loop attached to the floating weight &
the lift lever attached to the stanchion on which it rests. Take care with
bending.

All good wishes...

Very truly yours,

Jim Cartwright

You are correct on the 1/8" or a bit less. The lever on the stanchion can be
tweaked to rest closer to the lever on the reproducer. Sometimes tweaking is
required to get any of those reproducers to lift far enough.
If you need them I can get measurements as I have all 3 machines.

[Phono-L] Brunswick "Cortez" Questions

2018-03-27 Thread Immortal Performances via Phono-L
I recently obtained a Brunswick "Cortez" phonograph which I have long
wanted. Have taken steps to obtain the best possible sound quality from it
by sealing the tone arm joints with vasoline & using putty to seal the
connection between the base of the tone arm to the top of the passage
leading to the horn but am still disappointed in the results, noticeably
inferior to the similar size Columbia Viva-tonal 800 & 810 & the Victrola
Orthophonic "Credenza" as well as the Victrola 10-50 changer. ( For playing
acoustically recorded records the earlier Brunswicks with the "Ultona"tone
arm & soundbox & much smaller horns than the "Cortez" actually sound better
than the "Cortez" - in nearly all cases I find them best of all acoustic
phonographs for playing acoustic records.)

The "Cortez" horn itself appears to be in excellent condition without any
noticeable cracks or open joints which might cause air leaks. This leaves
only the sound box which also appears to be in excellent condition though
the gold plating is worn.

Have any of you with Brunswick "Cortez" machines found that the reproduction
is improved by having its sound box restored? If so, who would you
recommend to undertake the restoration or is this something that can be done
by the local repairman? Are appropriate gaskets, etc. available for
restoring a Brunswick "Cortez" soundbox?

Am still searching for the knife hinges for the front doors of the "Cortez"
& one missing front door knob.

Any ideas will be much appreciated.

[Phono-L] Brunswick Parts Needed

2018-03-12 Thread Immortal Performances via Phono-L
Just bought a Brunswick "Cortez" phonograph from an estate. The late owner
had removed the lid & doors so he could strip the outside of the cabinet &
never replaced them after the stripping & two of the door hinges are
missing. Also missing are one door knob, needle cups & many screws. Can
anyone furnish the door hinges & knob? The hinges attach to the tops &
bottoms of the doors. I've found some needle cups which fit but the top
of the used needle cup is nickel plated, not gold. The tone arm & lid
supports are gold plated which makes me think the original needle cups may
also have been gold plated. If so, I'd like to get gold plated needle
cups & possibly since the lid supports & tone arm are fairly rusty,
replacements for these too with finish in better condition.Any help in
finding these parts will be much appreciated. Many thanks! (I've
already asked Ron Haring.)

[Phono-L] Edison Grand Opera Cylinder Question

2017-08-10 Thread Immortal Performances via Phono-L
I'm dubbing my 2 minute Edison Grand Opera cylinders to CDs using a stylus
from Expert Stylus and Cartridge in England in a Shure cartridge, the motor
& mandrel from an Amberola 30 & the Rabco SL-8E linear tracking tonearm
which gives excellent results. In dubbing B-21 which is the Bach-Gounod
"Ave Maria" sung by Marie Rappold the record had a very quiet surface during
the announcement but when Mme. Rappold began to sing there was a constant
hiss which continued through her singing but ended as soon as she finished.
I observe no visible difference in the grooves This leads me to think that
this particular recording may have been from a dubbed master.None of the
other cylinders sound like this. Any ideas?

Re: [Phono-L] Edison Triumph A 2/4 minute conversion kit?

2017-01-08 Thread Immortal Performances via Phono-L
Dear Mr. Medved:

Your reputation for restoring reproducers has been widely praised.

Each year on February 11th I host an Edison Birthday Celebration here in
Austin, Texas for local & visiting antique phonograph collectors. A couple
years ago, some superb professional jazz musicians attended & then high school
student Colin Hancock assisted in recording them on wax cylinders using his
restored Recorder on my 2 minute only Edison Triumph Phonograph.

Colin is now in college & won’t be able to attend this year’s Party to which
some amateur jazz musicians are invited. I want to again record wax cylinders
of the musicians but one of my Recorders fails to cut a groove & the other
provides too weak a recording to accommodate a dozen musicians even though a
platform & high stools are provided for certain instruments, etc.

Do you restore Edison Recorders to peak performance? Or, would you have such
for sale?

Also, wanted in a less timely manner, are you able to restore the Reproducer of
a Columbia “BC” Twentieth Century Graphophone?

Many thanks & all good wishes…

Very truly yours,

Hello Ron,

Edison links vary from .0175 to .0192 in diameter. I use .020 annealed
stainless steel wire to make links for them all except for the O and M which I
use .018 annealed steel wire. The O link is longer than the M link.

Staple wire is too small in my opinion as it is .0175 on one side and .0186 on
the other as it is not round. The length is about right for the bent weight N
but too long for the C or H.

I was wondering if there are any printed or "known" specifications for the
