[libreoffice-projects] lists without moderators
Hello, I did a quick research, and it seems that the following mailing lists have no moderator yet. So, my question is, who likes to jump in? [libreoffice-projects] Who has issues dialling in?
Hello, I received feedback that dialing in to our conference calls is a problem from some countries, either as the number is busy all of the time, or as there is no direct dial-in. As noted previously, the Skype gateway has limitations. We're currently investigating in improving it, but we cannot promise anything right now. You know, proprietary software... ;-) What I would like to ask all of you is to send feedback if you have problems with dialing in, so we can evaluate the problematic numbers, or take care of getting local dial-in numbers. So far I know about issues with the UK and Slovenian numbers, and about a missing number in India. Hi *, for 3.4.2 rc1, we're now uploading builds to a public (but non-mirrored - so don't spread news too widely!) place, as soon as they're available. Grab them here: http://dev-builds.libreoffice.org/pre-releases/ If you've a bit of time, please give them a try report *critical* bugs not yet in bugzilla here, so we can incorporate them into the release notes. [libreoffice-projects] Reply settings on this list have changed
Hello, this is to inform you that the reply settings on this list have changed (so-called Reply to mangling has been disabled). So far, e-mails had set a reply-to the mailing list address. In other words, with any e-mail client, replies to e-mails on the list were automatically sent directly to the list. In the past, this lead to two major problems: 1. Several times, people have sent direct replies to the public list, where deleting them is nearly impossible. I remember at least one case where confidential information has been sent out that caused lots of worries for the sender and his employer. This happened because people hit reply and thought it would reply to the sender only. 2. I have heard complaints in the past from people, stating that working with the non-developer lists of LibreOffice is a pain for them, because of reply-to mangling, resulting in a lack of communication. This also led to the fact that numerous tasks were done by the same people, who needed to spend more and more time, instead of sharing the work burden with others. While I do not fully believe this argument, there's just one way to find out... Therefore, I have applied a change: Replies to e-mails from the list now only go to the original sender. You either need to use the reply to all feature of your e-mail program, or - preferably - the reply to list/reply to group feature, which will direct replies directly to the list. This is common practice on most mailing lists, and even the default setting for our mailing list software, so we did not re-invent the wheel here. Those seeking for details should have a look at http://www.unicom.com/pw/reply-to-harmful.html I know we had numerous discussions on this topic in the past, but the outcome was that roughly 50% were for this change, and 50% refused it, so I am really sitting between two chairs here, for which I beg for your understanding. On the one hand, those complaining the lists are unusable with reply-to mangling, on the other hand, those complaining the lists are unusable without reply-to mangling. Unfortunately, combining those two, even on a per-recipient basis, is not possible, so they are mutually exclusive to each other. In order to find out the real impact, I simply changed the setting, and again, I beg for your understanding. Do not worry: The mailing lists are for the community, so it's the community deciding how they should work. What I'd like to ask all of you is to try out for a few days if that change is good for each list or not. Should we find out it is more harmful than it helps, I will immediately switch back to the old behaviour. Sorry for this short notice, and I beg for your understanding that I'm somehow sitting between two chairs here. [libreoffice-projects] Does wiki want to come out and play?
Hello, I spent the last week with setting up our new wiki. I've copied all articles, users and most configuration settings, and enhanced them, based on the recent MediaWiki version. What is currently missing: - multiple languages - caching (thus it might be slow) - autopromoting/autoconfirming (spam protection) - WYSIWYG editor (there exists none) I've also enhanced spam protection, but that might trigger false alerts. So, what I'd like as feedback from you now is: - bugs and problems - feature and extension requirements - proposals on what to change Please check your favorite page if it renders allright, please check if all the functions work, and if any of the newly-introduced limitations for spam protection interrupt with your productive work and of course, let me know, what functionality you are missing, since now is the best time to include it. One word of warning, I can't emphasize that enough: This wiki is for TESTING PURPOSES only. Users, articles and settings - in other words: ANYTHING - created here WILL be deleted when the testing is over. There are NO backups. Content WILL break. Do NOT use this wiki for anything productive. So, after you've read all those warnings :) here you get the URL for testing: http://wikitest.documentfoundation.org Please direct feedback to webs...@global.libreoffice.org Thanks a lot for your support, and looking forward to migrationg to the new wiki soon, Florian -- Florian Effenberger, Chairman of the Board (Vorstandsvorsitzender) Tel: +49 8341 99660880 | Mobile: +49 151 14424108 The Document Foundation, Zimmerstr. 69, 10117 Berlin, Germany Gemeinnützige rechtsfähige Stiftung des bürgerlichen Rechts Legal details: http://www.documentfoundation.org/imprint -- Unsubscribe instructions: E-mail to projects+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/projects/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted
[libreoffice-projects] LibreOffice Conference - registration deadline ends tomorrow
Hello everyone, just about one more week, and this years' LibreOffice Conference takes place in Berlin. I would like to remind you that the *deadline* for the registration ends tomorrow, Monday, October 8th, 2012, at 21:59 UTC If you want to attend the conference, and didn't register so far, we urge you to do so within the deadline at http://conference.libreoffice.org/registration The LibreOffice Conference 2012 takes places in a public building of German ministries, and without proper registration, you can *not* enter the event. So, in your own interest, please ensure you meet the deadline. In case you do not want to attend the conference yet, I'd like to advertise a bit more. :) Our program committee has invested lots of time to make this conference an unforgettable, noteworthy event, and we are proud to have a program with a vivid mixture of development, community, marketing, infrastructure and many other working areas of the LibreOffice project: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/File:LiboCon2012.pdf Last but not least, this is your chance to meet the faces behind the LibreOffice community: developers, marketeers, admins, localizers, documentation writers, designers and many, many more. We'll all have a great time in Berlin, and want you to be a part of it! Taking place at the conference center of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi), and sponsored by leading players Canonical, Google and SerNet, it is not only the annual gathering of the worldwide community, but also meeting point for governmental and corporate adopters and innovators. [libreoffice-projects] gerrit downtime on Tuesday
Hello, in order to apply a necessary RAM upgrade, and in order to install outstanding packages, we need to shut down the host that powers gerrit for maintenance. Next Tuesday, November 6th, between 1200 and 1800 UTC gerrit will be on a scheduled downtime. We expect the host to have an effective downtime of only about two hours (up to 1400 UTC), but in order to prepare for unexpected events, please plan with 1800 UTC and take the necessary steps to deal with that situation. All other sites, including FreeDesktop ones and gitorious, will be available as readonly mirrors during the outage. Sorry for the inconveniences and thanks for your understanding, Florian -- Florian Effenberger, Chairman of the Board (Vorstandsvorsitzender) Tel: +49 8341 99660880 | Mobile: +49 151 14424108 The Document Foundation, Zimmerstr. 69, 10117 Berlin, Germany Gemeinnützige rechtsfähige Stiftung des bürgerlichen Rechts Legal details: http://www.documentfoundation.org/imprint -- Unsubscribe instructions: E-mail to projects+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/projects/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted
[libreoffice-projects] Results of yesterday's admin meeting
Hello, I was asked to spread the information about the infra work broadly to the project, so I'm forwarding you this (and probably subsequent) message. If you think it's offtopic, please let me know. For discussions on infra topics, we should use the webs...@global.libreoffice.org mailing list. Florian Original Message Subject: Results of yesterday's admin meeting Date: Fri, 09 Nov 2012 12:38:51 +0100 From: Florian Effenberger flo...@documentfoundation.org Organization: The Document Foundation To: webs...@global.libreoffice.org, hostmas...@documentfoundation.org Hello, yesterday, November 8th, we had an informal admin meeting in Pfronten, Germany. Participants were Alin Creţu, Chistian Lohmaier, Robert Einsle, Alexander Werner and myself. We have all unanimously agreed to the following proposal, which I would like to share with you. The basic problem is that our infrastructure needs to keep pace with the community growth, so it needs to grow rapidly. For that to happen, we need to establish better structures than now, and a better internal communication. To solve that issue, we propose the following: 1. categorizing and prioritizing of services We run various services. Some of them are crucial (like gerrit, email and the download page), others are important, but not that crucial. We need to get an overview of all running services and attach a category/priority to them. For normal services, the four eyes principle should be enforced, i.e. at least two people are fully in the know. For crucial services, a six eyes principle should be enforced, i.e. at least three people are fully in the know. Exceptions can be granted when needed, but the above should be the general rule. 2. creation of a core team To reflect the actual working areas and bandwith of working, we propose the setup of a core team (the name is a working title), composed of those who are experienced and have been involved in many parts of the infrastructure, in other words, those who not only have a focus on one aspect, those who have the big picture. 3. policy for new software and services New software and services should only be installed after the majority of the core team approved them. 4. defining responsible parties For all servers, VMs and services, at least one responsible party needs to be defined. Responsible means that it's their responsibility of keeping the service running and ensure proper updating, especially in terms of security fixes. 5. advance update planning For updates to be applied, especially those involving a restart of services or the reboot of an entire machine, a proper update and reboot procedure should be set in place. This also includes a fixed update window for regular updates, when downtime of services can be expected. However, in case of security updates, there is one major rule: Safety and security first. In other words, as soon as a crucial update is available, it will be immediately installed without any further delay. 6. documentation New services will only be installed after they have been properly documented beforehand. Exceptions can be granted by the core team. General rule: No productive services without proper documentation. We will come up with a proposal on how to document. Wiki and ODT have not been working out, so we will evaluate other options. An idea was to use RST files (restructured text), using Sphinx. Those text files could be managed via a git repository. We will come up with a proper template, e.g. for layout, but also with some basic principles (paths, commands, scriptable configuration and the like) for documentation. In addition, etckeeper and git will be used for tracking changes and manage the configuration. Furthermore, certain policies on when to use either source packages, or distribution packages, or a self-hosted repository will be defined. 7. OTRS We will make more use of OTRS in the future, especially for change management. 8. regular meetings Since e-mail is basically filling everyone's inbox, it becomes incredibly hard to keep up with all important aspects. We therefore plan at least monthly admin phone conference meetings to keep up with recent developments. In addition, depending of time availability and budgets, we plan to have one real life meeting per quarter. 9. todo/task management Every admin currently has their very own todo list. We will try to make these lists public, using one common tool. 10. housekeeping We will check the current recipient list of the internal admin list, removing those not being active for months. 11. adding new team members In addition, as a general rule, we try to involve new participants even better. Due to a lack of time, structure and enough VMs we failed at that, but it's important for the future growth of the admin team. As a general rule, we will be very careful of granting root access to all machines. There is no need to grow that current list of account holders
[libreoffice-projects] Personal wishes at the end of the year
Dear friends, Dear community, the end of the year 2012 is approaching with large steps, and in most countries around the globe, whether they celebrate Christmas or not, the holiday season has just begun. People meeting with old friends, their families, their beloved ones, thinking about what has happened in the past twelve months, and looking forward to what is to come the next 365 days. For the LibreOffice community, The Document Foundation and also me personally, the current year has been an extraordinarily exciting one. One year ago, we weren't sure whether our plan to set up TDF in Berlin the way we wanted it to be - independent, meritocratic, open and transparent - would work out, or whether we had to redecide for another country. Shortly before Christmas, we received several concerns we had to address, but as all of you know, luckily everything went well, and on February 17th, The Document Foundation was finally incorporated in Berlin, marking not only a milestone in the history of free office suites, but also, I dare to say, in the history of foundations under German law (Stiftung). Since the creation of our very own legal entity, the LibreOffice project has seen a massive boost in activity once again. Individuals, governments and corporations from around the world have a rapidly growing interest in what we do, how we do, and how we govern ourselves. The LibreOffice community has been invited to dozens of events around the world, giving speeches, talking to major stakeholders, and, most important, fascinated more and more people to become a part of our community. This October, we have gathered in Berlin and celebrated a wonderful conference at the physical hometown of The Document Foundation, which to me marked the highlight of this year. I am very proud for being part of this community. Exciting times are behind us, and even more exciting times are ahead. When we started TDF more than two years ago, one of our strongest wishes was to keep this spirit and this momentum we have seen during the very first days - and today, I feel this spirit and this momentum have even grown further and continue to drive us day by day. I would like to thank all of you personally for what you have contributed to LibreOffice, The Document Foundation and free and open source software at large. I am honoured to be part of the free office community since summer 2004, and still, I am fascinated day by day to see this activity all over the world, people dedicating their heart and their passion to work on our common goal. In all those years, I not only met fantastic colleagues, but even more, true friends. We can all be proud and thankful for what we have achieved, and can anticipate the year 2013 with confidence, as great times are ahead - the best is yet to come. I wish all of you a wonderful holiday season, lots of time to spend with your beloved ones, time to recreate your soul and to relax, and time for those things in life that are truly important. Have a wonderful start into the new year, with lots of joy, health, success and luck, to achieve your goals and make your dreams come true. On behalf of millions of LibreOffice users worldwide, and very personally, thank you very much for everything you do, and looking forward to be working with you in the next year! Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year! [libreoffice-projects] DOWNTIME of mailing lists and downloads
Hello, as if the usual release stress wasn't enough, bilbo, our server responsible for e-mail, mailing lists and downloads, just experienced another SSD crash. [libreoffice-projects] Happy Birthday, Document Foundation!
Hello everyone, exactly one year ago, February 17th 2012, The Document Foundation was established as a charitable Foundation under German law (gemeinnützige rechtsfähige Stiftung des bürgerlichen Rechts). So far, it has proven to be the ideal entity for reflecting the LibreOffice's community needs. I am proud and honoured to be part of this project, part of this community, and part of TDF. I would like to thank all of you who have contributed to the success of our common goal - all developers, marketeers, localizers, administrators, designers, testers, donors, adopters, users and everyone else involved. [libreoffice-projects] server outage tomorrow 0900 UTC
Hello, once again, a hard disk in our mail, mailing list and download server crashed. Tomorrow, Thursday, at 0900 UTC, our ISP will check and if needed replace the hard disk. We will experience a downtime of about 30-90 minutes for the mentioned services. Sorry for those inconveniences - we plan to separate several services soon, to avoid those kind of outages. For questions, please write to hostmas...@documentfoundation.org or - during the outage - on #tdf-infra at Freenode. Thanks to Alin for investigating the problem! [libreoffice-projects] short downtime of bilbo (again)
Hello, since last time our ISP did not change the disk, we will have a short downtime of bilbo again, our mail server for mail, mailing lists and downloads. This time, the disk will be replaced. In parallel, I'll now order the replacement hardware for bilbo, so those painful and extremely odd disk outages hopefully vanish in the future. Because of the frequent disk outages, I expect some other hardware problem, hopefully cured by a shiny new server. Admins are available at #tdf-infra on Freenode during the outage. [libreoffice-projects] server downtime, once again
Hello, you are probably as annoyed as I am by these kind of e-mails, but bilbo needs another downtime due to a disk replacement. This time, it's not the SSD dying again, but the regular SATA disk. After a few years of service, this is rather normal, so today, 1400 UTC, which is in approximately two hours our download server and mailing list will have a downtime of hopefully only a few minutes for disk replacement. [libreoffice-projects] testing IPv6-enabled download site
Hello, as part of the move to a new infrastructure, I've also enabled an IPv6-capable download page for testing purposes. As the GeoIP module was a bit too old, I had to compile it manually, and that's why I seek your assistance. ;-) Those of you having IPv6 connectivity, can you please go to http://download-test.documentfoundation.org/TIMESTAMP.mirrorlist and check if you get the country you're located in as result? It should look like List of best mirrors for IP address 2a01:4f8:190:3144::2, located in Germany (DE) with your IP and country respectively. In case you get only IPv4 - that's normal, nothing to report, might be related to Happy Eyeballs. [1] In case you get IPv6 and the right country is shown - no need to report either. ;-) But in case you have IPv6, and a wrong or unknown country is shown, please let me know, so I can investigate. From time to time, this can happen with tunnels, especially those from tunnelbroker.net based on my experience, but in general, it should be working. I only want to enable IPv6 for the production site when all is working. Thanks for your feedback in advance! [libreoffice-projects] Re: testing IPv6-enabled download site
Hi, Christian Lohmaier wrote on 2013-04-30 17:24: maxmind's demo shows the same result, so no misconfiguration on your part, but rather some bad data - HE is in US, so if the ip-addresses are attributed to them, then it is irrelevant where the actual endpoint is seems we have the same tunnel endpoint. ;-) Yep, that's HE's Frankfurt POP. [libreoffice-projects] Seeking for list moderators
Hello, at the moment, we are looking for volunteers who could help moderate this mailing list. If you are interested, the only requirement is that you are subscribed to the list yourself and read its mails in a somehow timely manner, but that's about it. Moderation means dealing with e-mails that do not automatically make it to the list, which you then manually forward, or reject. This happens either when an e-mail comes from an unknown sender, e.g. when a project member uses a different address for posting. It also occurs when someone unexperienced writes to the list, thinking it's a private account, but in fact it's a public list. You'll receive the message to be moderated via e-mail, which you then can either moderate through, or reject. Is someone interested in joining our efforts? It'd be much appreciated - just drop me an email (please also copy me directly, and not only the list), then I'm happy to add you to the list of moderators. Thanks! [libreoffice-projects] Gerrit downtime on Thursday
Hello, this is just a short reminder that the Thursday, June 27th, Robert, Alex and I will try to migrate Gerrit from the current LXC instance to a KVM host. We expect to start at around 1600 UTC (1800 German time). While we try to keep the downtime as short as possible, we cannot estimate the efforts required yet, so it's hard to predict how long it will take. If you have done modifications to the Gerrit machine, please ensure that it is in the documentation repository of TDF infra, as we have to rebuild the base system from scratch, and only can use what we have on file. During the migration, admins are available via the hostmaster@ alias or on #tdf-infra at FreeNode. [libreoffice-projects] AskBot downtime at 00:00 UTC
Hello, for migrating our database to the new AskBot instance, Evgeny (AskBot author and contracted by TDF for this specific task) has to shut down our instance temporarily, tomorrow, July 3rd, at 00:00 UTC AskBot will be unavailable during the time of copying the data. Hallo, thanks to the great support of Robinson, I managed to install a first test-drive of the Etherpad. [libreoffice-projects] Etherpad is now available
Hello, good news, everyone! I've just put Etherpad into production, to be used by the wider community! The service is available at http://pad.documentfoundation.org In order to fight spam, pad creation has to be manually requested at the moment. Everyone can edit existing pads, but not create new ones. Be advised that all pads are listed on the index page, and are publicly accessible - editing of confidential information should happen elsewhere. To request creation of a new pad, please write to hostmas...@documentfoundation.org Data you put into the pad from now on will be preserved in our MySQL database, so it's now officially in production mode. We still need to gather some experience, but I think we're good to go to use it. :-) I propose to use the respective project's/mailing list names for the pads, like qa, marketing, website, and prefix it with the language code where needed, like de_marketing or it_qa. Enjoy, and thanks a lot to Robinson for the initial kick-off of this! [libreoffice-projects] LibreOffice Conference - Registration is now open
Dear community, in less than four weeks, the LibreOffice Conference 2013 will take place in Milan, Italy. LibOCon is the global and annual event for the whole LibreOffice community and ecosystem, with creators, adopters and users meeting and gathering, exchanging ideas and thoughts. After the Call for Papers has been finished, we are currently working hard to prepare the schedule out of those many great proposals we have received. In order to help the organizers with their plannings, we today ask you to register if you want to take part in this year's conference. This helps us in estimating the amount of attendants and ensuring that enough capacities are available for everyone. We also need this information to send you last-minute updates via e-mail. Registering is easy - just send an e-mail to confere...@libreoffice.org and state: 1. your first and last name 2. your e-mail address 3. your organization/affiliation, if applicable 4. your IRC nickname, if you want Participation at the conference will cost 10 € per person, payable directly at the venue, which helps the local organizers in producing required material. [libreoffice-projects] Advance notice of upcoming board elections
Dear community, Dear members of TDF, this e-mail is to inform you about the upcoming board elections, encouraging you to decide whether you want to stand, and inviting you to meet with the current board in Milan and discuss any questions you may have. As per § 7 II of our statues, [1] the board serves a term of two years, which ends on February 16th, 2014, with the new board in charge the day after. In addition, the statutes foresee a 45 days period before the elections, when the official announcement has to be sent, including a detailed timeline. This official announcement will follow soon, but already today, we would like to illustrate the rough plan of the transition phase between the current and the new board: - In Milan, people will have the opportunity to talk to current board members, asking about the work and their experience during the last two years. Likewise, they also have the chance to talk to the community during the conference and decide whether they want to stand. - Very shortly after the conference, we plan to start the nomination phase of candidates, which will approximately last between one and two weeks. This (and not now) is the time to publicly propose people or nominate yourself. - After the nomination phase has ended, with self-nomination being explictly allowed, the official election and challenging/confirmation of the election will happen, which will take another two to three weeks. - If we are in time, we plan to have the new board elected by November or December. They will then officially be in charge beginning February 17th, 2014. - With this timing, the new board and the current board have approximately two to three months where they can work together, so the transition is as easy as possible, with the current board introducing the new board to their duties and the way of working, and jointly defining the future strategy of TDF. In total, 10 board members are up for election, amongst them 7 seat holders and 3 deputies. Per § 6 III every member of TDF is eligible to vote for the board, and to be elected into the board. There are only two limitations in place: Members of the membership committee cannot be in the board at the same time, as per § 6 III, and only one third of the board may have the same affiliation/employer as per § 8 IV. We are happy to answer any questions you may have, either via mailing list, or at the LibreOffice Conference in Milan. [libreoffice-projects] SQL server was overloaded
Hello, Joren and Robinson made me aware of a problem with the wiki, ownCloud and other sites on the kermit server using SQL backends, including the main website. The SQL connections were all in use by the MediaWiki upgrade script that has been running for a few hours already over the wikihelp instance, which seem to have an _extremely_ large cache (a magnitude of the regular wiki cache). Sorry for these issues - we will try to fine-tune MySQL again (already invested a fair amount of time in doing so before), and if that doesn't help, we probably need to invest in some more hardware. We're growing heavily these days - which is good news, of course, but has even higher infra demands... to give you a number: SQL sucked up to ~30 GB of RAM. Note that neither the mailing lists, nor the downloads are affected, as both are on other machines. It's 9:30pm here now, so I just interrupted the cache purging and let the maintenance script finish without that, so we should be back to normal soon. [libreoffice-projects] improving our Plone sites
Hello, Andreas Mantke has spent a large chunk of his time to set up various Plone sites that are extensively used by the project (thank you so much for your ongoing work on this!). While these sites genereally perform quite well, there are some areas that definitely need improvement, and probably some work on the main Plone code. TDF's board is currently evaluating options of involving an external party to improve the most pushing items in due time. For that to happen, Andreas, Christian and myself would like to compile a list of needs and wishes, but also of bugs and problems, that currently occur on the extensions and templates website. (For ODFAuthors, FrODeV is in charge, and for the conference, we will not use Plone anymore in 2014.) If you have feedback on this, please add your items to http://pad.documentfoundation.org/p/infra We will review and prioritize those, to come up with a first batch of things to be done. Please be sensible with your wishes - this first round is for targetting the most urgent needs and problems, and not for a complete rewrite of the pages. ;-) For discussions on this project, feel free to use the webs...@global.libreoffice.org mailing list. [libreoffice-projects] notes on travel refunds
Hello, as I've been handling quite some travel refunds, and often stumbled upon the same issues, I'd like to briefly mention four important hints: (1) Please do not send your requests to SPI on your own. Only send them to TDF's treasurer, who then will ask SPI if they can refund from the LibreOffice budget. (2) If you drive by car, please keep invoices from the gas stations. While we do have a per-km-rule, at least when we ask SPI for refunds, invoices are needed. (3) Please do not send in receipts for events you attend when nobody approved it so far. As per the board's decision, all expenses must be approved by one of the budget holders. (4) As a general rule, TDF can only refund the cheapest fare possible, i.e. only regular hotels, usually between 3 and 4 stars, and only 2nd class fares. Notable exception to the latter one is if a trip by 1st class is cheaper. In those cases, however, refunds are only possible if you send in proof that at the time of booking (!) the higher class trip indeed was the cheapest one. Sorry if I am nitpicking here, but chasing those issues usually suck up a fair amount of time. :-) Thanks for making the life for our treasurers easier, Florian -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: projects+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/projects/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

Re: [libreoffice-projects] multilingual TDF planet feeds
Hi, Charles-H. Schulz wrote on 2014-01-06 15:01: Okay. Well, I'd like to experiment with the first option: multiple languages on one planet. There are indications that the path we chose first may have been demotivating for some non-English blogging authors :-) I personally feel strongly _against_ such a solution, as having a zillion of languages mixed in the current planet setup will cause nothing but confusion. However, this is just my personal take on that, so - if there are no objections from the community, I won't vetoe. Of course, I assume that we would still need one maintainer per language? Yes, that would help to judge the blog's content, indeed. Re: [libreoffice-projects] multilingual TDF planet feeds
Hi, Charles-H. Schulz wrote on 2014-01-08 12:19: Florian, Christian, would this take a long time to set up? We don't necessarily have to set that up in January, but at least if it's feasible after FOSDEM without too much hassle, I think we should give it a go... my proposal is to have a look on this after the website relaunch has been done. The latter one will take quite some time, and I think it's more important to have this dealt with first also from the infra side (which requires some time, especially when native language communities start localizing the new site in a staging area we need to setup), and then look at the Planet. So, yes, it's doable, but not before the website relaunch is done. Unless, of course, someone comes up with a ready-to-implement solution that requires no work from my side, besides adding it to our machine. :-) Florian -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: projects+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/projects/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted
[libreoffice-projects] update on project management/ticketing system
Hello, having worked with Cloph on some real-life examples today (thanks a lot for your work and time!), I'd like to give you an update on the project management/ticketing system. TL;DR:Redmine looks very promising. Some further evaluation to come, final decision within the next weeks. Most of you know that a few weeks ago, I invited the community to test our Redmine instance at https://intranet.documentfoundation.org/redmine/ - and in fact, you still can participate in testing! Reason for looking for such a tool is that with all those tasks and projects, and also people working for TDF these days, we need some easy mechanism to see where stand. I am not a friend of overly exaggerated project management, but some basics can help for sure. ;-) Note that we do _NOT_ intend to replace BugZilla with it - I can't emphasize that enough. BugZilla is a different tool for different use. We also do not plan to fold all other tools into Redmine for the moment. Where it's possible, we will, but looking at what it provides, neither the calendaring, nor the wiki, nor the file repository are likely to fulfill even our basic needs. We'll look further, but for the moment, my main area of investigation is the project management and ticketing. So, the good news are: We really love Redmine so far when it comes to ticketing and project management! :-) It fulfills all the mandatory (plus many more) requirements pointed out at http://pad.documentfoundation.org/p/infra (a bit further down the page) The only drawback - and difference to OTRS - is that Redmine expects, like BugZilla IMHO, an account for each user. The OTRS-style Cc'ing of external addresses does not work. There was a plugin for older Redmine versions, which unfortunately crashes with recent ones. We might be able to fix it (we have many developers in the community, I heard :-) - but it does not work out of the box. Plus, OpenID is supposed to work, but failed in our tests. Besides, Redmine looks really attracting. So, how to continue: I will work with Cloph on some more real-life experience with concrete tasks, to see what can be improved and what could be a blocker. I'd also like to have a look at the forks ChiliProject and OpenProject, if they have some benefits to us (I read something about a meetings assistance feature in OpenProject which might be nice). I'm not heavily in favor of looking at other systems, as to me, Redmine or its forks simply is it. Feedback on other tools welcome, of course. Then the infra team will have a call the next one to two weeks to further clarify details. If possible, we'll make this a public call for everyone to join. Before, we will also have a closer look at OTRS again, which contains lots of current data and is preferred by a few contributors as well, to have a fair comparison. There is no final decision yet, and feedback is always welcome - but so far, there are lots of sympathies for it, so to speak. More then later... [libreoffice-projects] updates on project management software
Hello, TL;DR:The infra team is close to the final decision for ticketing and project management. I'd like to give you a brief update on the project management software. I have now tested the Redmine forks/derivatives OpenProject and ChiliProject. Both seem to be based on Redmine 1.x (current version is 2.x), but are rather comparable in terms of functionality. Slight differences occur (e.g. OpenProject can send tickets in the language of the account holder rather than in English), but per se, they seem to be very comparable. One killer feature for me is to create private tickets, e.g. with confidential data, or private comments - both of which Redmine supports, the others don't. In a nutshell: Right now, Redmine is my clear favorite, and I'd like to soon come to a final decision. Cloph and I have been started to use Redmine for a real life evaluation, and so far it performs quite well. Some annoying drawbacks I've found so far: 1. You can only assign a ticket to someone who's a member of the respective project. So, e.g. Italo as member of certification could not be assigned a ticket in infrastructure, where he is no member. 2. There are no default owners for tickets, only for ticket categories (which have to be chosen explictly). 3. You cannot have third parties/externals be notified via e-mail about a ticket status. Everyone needs an account at Redmine. Nothing of that is a real deal breaker for me, but I still wanted to mention it. Hopefully this week, the admin team plans a final call on the topic to see whether to make the switch from OTRS, and what the advantages and disadvantages are. I'd like to soon finish that topic, so thoughts welcome.

Hi, just a quick note: We have now put Redmine into production mode at https://redmine.documentfoundation.org Most accounts have to be recreated by you (we warned you :-) I'll follow up with some details on how to get admin rights and create projects, we all need to learn how best make use of it and structure things. [libreoffice-projects] update on AskBot
Hello, I finally found time to talk to Evgeny about our AskBot instance. I worked myself through the BugZilla entries (and commented on a few ;-), and compiled a list of all open tasks and issues I am aware of. I think there has been quite some communication problem in the past - looking at the requests, there have been some that are clearly out of scope of a regular service contract, as they were asking for heavy rewriting or feature implementation of AskBot itself. Other tasks, however, are clearly bugs that need fixing. As usual, many people yelling at the same time in parallel doesn't make things better and as we have seen, utterly delays the real important tasks. :-) I have now sent Evgeny a list of all these tasks, with my estimation on what is a bug and what is a feature. He will review it by next week, let me know if he shares my view :) and makes a proposal on a service contract including maintenance and bugfixing, plus his hourly rate for feature implementation should we desperately need some of these soon. As with regards to other languages, I now learned that the ease of setting those up depends of the support of the SOLR search engine. Some languages are easier, others not. I will send Evgeny a list of languages required, and he will let me know what works quite easy and what not - I asked to, even if some functionality is missing, roll out as many as possible soon, to finally make people happy. The list I currently have is: - Spanish - Arabic - Croatian - Japanese - German Are there more languages where we have people willing to moderate (and if necessary translate the interface), so I can put it on the list? One last comment: Given the amount of (unsuccessful) communication in the past, please poke *ME* or this website list for requests, so I can coordinate. Everyone sending Evgeny their wishes is not the most fruitful option available. ;-) Thanks, and sorry again for those delays, Florian -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: projects+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/projects/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

[libreoffice-projects] AskBot localization, finally
Hello, good news, everyone - we finally have localized AskBot instances running. So many thanks and kudos to Alex and Evgeny for making that happen! The following AskBot localizations have been set up: http://ask.libreoffice.org/de/ http://ask.libreoffice.org/hr/ http://ask.libreoffice.org/it/ http://ask.libreoffice.org/ro/ Some notes: - I have copied everyone who has requested localization to this mail. However, nobody has registered an account so far, so you can't administer. Please do register and mail your account name to hostmas...@documentfoundation.org (not to me!), so you can get admin rights. - All instances share the same databases, which yields to some issues, e.g. with tagging and separation of kudos and the like. However, the problem seems to be deeply in AskBot, requiring a fair amount (estimation ~100 hours) of work to be fixed. We need to look into budgeting whether that's possible short-term. If you do make changes to your instance, chances are it affects _all_ languages, so please be cautious. - If there are further languages we need to deploy, please write to hostmas...@documentfoundation.org (not to me!) with your account name, so Alex can set it up. I remember some more languages required, but during the last call for feedback, only those mentioned above wrote back to us. Enjoy, and thanks again! Please do NOT enable other features (discussions, files, wiki etc.) without talking to the infra team. [libreoffice-projects] infra analysis and status quo
Hello, the infra team has met to review the past issues, and would like to make its analysis public to the community: I. introduction We have three big servers running, called dauntless, excelsior and falco. The first two were put online in October, the last one in December. The planned platform was oVirt with Gluster, with CentOS as the base system. All servers are comparable in their hardware setup, with 256 GB of RAM, one internal and one external Gbit networking card, server-grade mainboard with IPMI, several HDDs, and 64 core CPU. All three hosts were connected internally via a Gbit link, with oVirt managing all of them, and Gluster being the underlying network file system. II. before going productive Extensive tests were carried out before going live with the platform. The concrete CentOS, oVirt and Gluster version used for production was tested twice, on separate and on the actual hardware, with the IPMI and BIOS versions used later; that included two desaster simulations, where one host was disconnected unannounced and oVirt behaved exactly as expected - running the VMs on the other host without interruption. When the platform was ready, to not endanger anything, first all non-critical VMs were migrated, i.e. mainly testing VMs where a downtime is not critical, but that still produce quite some load. Working exclusively with these was done over several weeks, with no problems detected. After that, several other VMs were migrated, including Gerrit, and the system worked fine for weeks with no I/O issues and no downtime. III. downtime before FOSDEM The first issues happened from Wednesday, January 28, around 1440 UTC, until Thursday, January 29, early morning. Falco was disconnected for up to a couple of minutes. The reason of this is still unclear. - The infra team is looking for an oVirt expert who can help us parse the logs to better understand what has happened. At the same time, on an unrelated reason, a file system corruption on excelsior was discovered, which is a failure that has been in existence since January 5 already. - The monitoring scripts, based on snmpd, claimed everything was ok. Scripts have already been enhanced to properly report the status. Each of the errors on their own, if detected in time, would have caused no downtime at all. With that, 2 our of 3 Gluster bricks were down, and the platform was stopped. (Gluster is comparable to RAID 5 here.) Gluster detected a possible split-brain situation, so a manual recovery was required. The actual start of the fix was not complicated, in comparison to other networking file systems, and could easily be handled, but the recovery took long due to the amount of data already on the platform and the internal Gbit connectivity. Depending on the VM, the downtime was between 3 and 18 hours. oVirt's database also had issues, which could however be fixed. In other words, the reason for most of the downtime was not finding a fix, but waiting for it to be completed. - Situations like these can be less time-consuming with an (expensive) internal 10 Gbit connection, or with a (slower, but more redundant and cheaper) internal trunked/bonded x * 1 Gbit connection, which we will be looking into. - Work in progress currently is an SMS monitoring system where we seek for volunteers to be included in the notification. SMS notification is to be sent out in case of severe issues and can be combined with Android tools like Alarmbox. - In the meantime, we have also fine-tuned the alerts and thresholds to distinguish messages. All infra members including several volunteers were working jointly on getting the services back together. However, we experienced some issues with individual VMs, where it was unclear who is responsible for them, and where documentation was partially missing or outdated. It worked out in the end, however. - Infra will enforce a policy for new and existing services. At least 2 responsible maintainers are required per service, including proper documentation. That will be announced with a fair deadline. Services not fulfilling those requirements will be moved from production to test. A concrete policy is still to be drafted with the public. On a side note, we discovered, although it has worked fine for months, and survived two desaster simulations, that oVirt does not support Gluster running on the internal interface, and the hosted engine and management on the external interface. This fact is undocumented in the oVirt documentation and was discovered by Alex during FOSDEM, when he attended an oVirt talk, where this was mentioned as a side-note. - An option is to look into SAN solutions, which are not only faster, but also probably more reliable. We might have some supporting offer here that needs looking into. During FOSEM, Alex also got in touch with one oVirt and one Gluster developer. We also talked to a
[libreoffice-projects] Infra call agenda in Etherpad
Hello, based on what we have in the Redmine ticket, I quickly hacked together an infra call agenda in Etherpad. Everyone joining the call is invited to in parallel open http://pad.documentfoundation.org/p/infra in their browsers.
[libreoffice-projects] infra status update
Hello, I'd like to send a brief infra status update. The good news is, all productive VMs are back to normal We have moved, at least for the moment, to a stock Linux system with plain KVM virtualization, without any network file system or complex layer in between. Non-production and test-VMs will be migrated over the next days, some of them are already online again. The crashtest machine will be back in service soon as well, getting a dedicated machine. We will have two meetings with the infra team tomorrow and on Monday to further analyze the situation. Shortly after that, we will host an infra call, where everyone is invited, to recap the situation and talk about the further plans. Thanks a lot, Florian -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: projects+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/projects/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted
