The Just Words! website is due to close in a weeks time.

This is sad news.

The site host, Lycos, is cutting out all unprofitable activities, and although
they promised site hosting would remain until at least the end of March they
have now brought the closure forward to 15th February.

I have been investigating alternative hosts with the intention of making the
site a little more professional and until this weekend was intending to
relaunch the site as soon as possible. I am now having serious second thoughts
and may keep the site permanently closed.

Rewriting the site for a new host will be a time consuming task given the numerous links that have to be changed and I have to consider whether the usage of the site - 9 people per week - justifies this time investment.

QL activities take up much of my time that could be devoted to other things. In particular I have a number of family history projects that are on permanent hold. I have still not kept a promise to a niece that I made 3 years ago.

It is very tempting to abandon the QL to be able to spend more time on family
history. The last time I wrote anything for one of the family history magazines
I was paid generously for my work. The article produced a large number of
reactions including one from a distant relative I had never heard of before and
who had masses of family photos. In return she got a mass of detail from me
that peviously she had known nothing about. The QL prevents from doing more
work like this.

If you want something from the Just Words! website, download it in the next 7
days,

Best wishes,

Geoff

I don't have time to download anything for a few days (health, doctor,
hospital probably). Why not put everything on a CD or allow someone
(Dilwyn?) to put your software on his website?

Hope your decision isn't final and thanks for all you have done for the QL.

Ok I download QOC2 again to make sure I did not have a demo version - no
change
Tried saving to Win7_ ( windows I: drive )that is a plug in HD that
plugs into a socket on the top of the (Medion) computer, this works !

Had a look at the properties of the Win file (Win1_ on C: drive,) the
properties box has an additional tab compared to the properties of the
win file on I:drive, the extra tab is security and allows various
states of control for different user, also the win file on the I: drive
has me as the owner the win file on the C: drive has administrator as
the owner.
I have tried changing the settings without much success, also files get
lost on the Floppy drive if I use it.

Simple solution is just to set Win1_ to the I drive.
Seems like a vista thing, must just keep trying I guess

[Ql-Users] Nebula II

2009-02-22 Thread Dilwyn Jones
Does anyone have any knowledge of a QL game called Nebula II from the 1980s
sometimes?

Who published it? (maybe, just maybe, Pyramide in France???)

Trying to help someone who got in touch via my website form.

Ideally he'd like to buy a copy if anyone has one/

[Ql-Users] SGC/GC batteries

2009-02-22 Thread Davide Santachiara
Hello everybody,

Privately I've checked with Tony Firshman, Roy Wood and Rich Mellor that the
original batteries for SGC/GC are no nore available (kind of discontinued
items). Thanks to Romaldo Parodi it seems we have found similar batteries
which in theory could be easily used to replace the original ones.

Does anyone has a schematic of GC and SGC in order to connect properly these
batteries to the SGC/GC battery socket?

Thank you

Best regards

Davide

[Ql-Users] SINCLAIR QL's 25th birthday - afterma th II

2009-02-22 Thread Urs Koenig (QL)
Logbook: Month one after the birth anniversary of our baby we look how the
web and media took up the story.

As expected there was poor feedback if any in most NewsGroups, only
comp.sys.sinclair took it up:
http://groups.google.com/group/comp.sys.sinclair/browse_thread/thread/6888ea
8b4b1761cc

Good usage of the web-page information. I got 216 downloads of the
PowerPoint presentation and 75 of QPC (the virtual QL to run on the PC) so
far. 4GB traffic in 5 weeks. That’s not bad for an oldy.

German c’t magazine (Issue 3/2009, page 24) took up the line and mentioned
the QL’s 25th anniversary on their regular Prozessorgeflüster (CPU
rumors). They also mention the cloud QLPSION-NetBook-Todays Netbooks:
http://www.heise.de/kiosk/archiv/ct/2009/3/24_kiosk

But it comes even better…

UK’s well known and favourite PC magazine Personal Computer World (PCW) –
who took up the line in their “test bed” blog
http://labs.pcw.co.uk/2009/01/sinclair-qls-25.html just after my message on
January 12th – went deeper into it.

They got in contact with David Karlin (QL hardware designer) and me. David
gave en interview to Clive Akass. I allowed them to use all the information
and pictures from my web-sites. The result can be found in the current issue
(April 2009, Vol. 32 No. 4) on sale since February 19th.
http://www.pcw.co.uk/magazine/thisissue.
- We are in the Editorial of Kelvyn Taylor on page 7,
- then the Interview with David and QL vs Mac comparismn on pages 14
and 15
- and as a goody the full reprint of the QL benchtest from the June
1984 issue (Vol. 7 No. 5) on pages 53 to 60.

I can hardly remind me of such a massive coverage (11 pages) of the QL in a
main street publication ever.

So go out and buy the magazine! Put it on the shelf and tell you children
and grandchildren about the Mac that never was better than The machine
that failed in the market.

For the remaining eleven month of the anniversary you can expect a surprise
every month.

Take care and have a nice weekend, Urs

[Ql-Users] Memory Reduction

2009-02-22 Thread matrassyl
Hello,
I have acquired the Black Knight Chess Program. I was informed it would not
work on modern QL systems but have found that it will when the memory in the
system is reduced. That is Black Knight will not run unless memory is reduced
to 8MB or less, if this is done it will run on QPC2? 3.33 SMSQ/E 3.13 and does
not seem to be upset by the screen size ie fine on 800x600 except that its own
window is v small. My Question is does anyone know of a reasonable way of
reducing apparent memory on a Q60 other than by taking SIMMs out?

Thanks

Duncan
