Re: [ql-users] basic HTML viewer?

2002-05-20 Thread Darren Branagh

Hi All,

To Answer Jim, There are a few HTML based viewers floating about

1, QMOSAIC - I think this was a UNIX port, and a bit buggy. Available in
the freeware libraries (Dilwyn?) and probaby the QUANTA library.

2. LYNX - A text only HTML browser ported by Jonathan Hudson from the
unix/linux sources. Available from his Website (follow the link from
Dilwyn's Page) This could even run from a disk on gold card systems if I
recall, and was basic but worked. This is probably your best bet, but it is
pretty big I think.

3. HYPERBROWSER - What norman was talking about, by Tarquin Mills. I don't
know if this was ever finished (tarquin?)

4. DOC2HTML - A useful utility that converts quill doc's to HTML - Written
by Dilwyn Jones and available on his web page.

There is always the Prowess reader, but as you said, not all people are
running prowess.

BTW Jim, nice to hear you're still playing with your QDT...heh, heh...
(private joke guys!)

 Guys,

I am thinking of using rudimentary HTML file viewing capabilities for
the QDT help system. I could use some recommendations for programs to
look at (if there are any) that give the following:

 1) works in normal pointer environment (or could be adapted to)
 2) does not require PWS (not all users will be running it)
 3) has hot links (open different files from a link)
 4) can display some graphics

Any suggestions? These could even include other open source code from
the Unix world as long as it isn't too complex. I am only looking for a
basic capability (tables and figures at the most).

 Thanks for the help,
 Jim

2002-05-20 Thread Darren Branagh

Hi Jim,

Another system you may want to look at is the lastest version of Dilwyn
Jones VIEWER program - this has a links ability in it, not really HTML, but
works beautifully. Can link to items within the same document via the line
its on just by putting the cursor over it and ENTERing, on load in another
doc by using a different kind of link which you pre-embedd in the text.

I'm using it to convert a freeware encyclopedia for the PC to the QL which
has links in it, which is about half done.

Quanta and NESQLUG are pleased to sponsor the US 2002 QL Show to be held
at the Park Inn in Oxon Hill, Maryland on Saturday 1 June 2002. Several
European vendors are expected including J-M-S, QBranch, and Q-Celt. Jim

a NESQLUG meeting open to all attendees. A Maryland Crab Fest is planned
for Sunday.

The Park Inn is a newly renovated motel just off the I-95/I-495 beltway

$59 per night for 1 to 4 people. There is a swimming pool, game room,
free parking, free local phone calls, and free continental (coffee,

Oxon Hill is the first town in Maryland after you cross the Potomac

Washington, I-495.

Driving Directions: (Exits refer to exits in Maryland.)

I-95 South - exit 4A, St Barnabas Road, Through 5 lights, Hotel on Right.
(St. Barnabas Ys into Oxon Hill Rd.)
I-95 North - exit 3A, Left off ramp, Through one light, Hotel on Left.

There are numerous fast food restaurants slong Oxon Hill Road near the
Park Inn. Plus there is the nearby Rivertown Common Shopping Center.
Oxon Hill has a petting zoo if you bring younger children. Oxon Hill
also has harness racing at Rosecroft Raceway.

The Washington, D.C. Mall stretches about 2 miles from The US Capitol to
The Linclon Memorial near the Potomac River. Attractions on or just off
the Mall include The Vietnam Veterans Memorial, The Korean War Veterans
Memorial, The White House, National Museum of American History, The
National Aquarium, The National Museum of Natural History (includes
dinasuars!), National Gallery of Art, US Botanic Garden, Voice of
America, National Air and Space Museum, The Hirshhom Museum and Sculture
Garden, plus The Smithsonian Institute with several art, invention, and
historical buildings. Most of these attractions are FREE!

In the summer, the Mall often hosts various events. The last time I was
there was International Day with music, food, and displays from all over
the world.

My sources indicate the Hot Night Spots are in nearby Crystal City and
Arlington rather than D.C proper.

For those who arrive Friday, many of us plan to eat supper at the Beijing
Hunan Chinese Restaurant, 6049 Oxon Hill Road not far from the Park Inn.
Tel: 301 567 1900. We will gather in the Park Inn parking lot at 6:30PM
to share rides to the Restaurant.

What is a Maryland Crab Fest?
by Al Boehm

Well for starters you wear very casual clothes. Very casual. That's
because eating crabs is a very messy enterprise. In the old days a Crab
Fest was always outdoors. Newspaper was spread on the table. Now they
often use a large roll of white or brown wrapping paper to cover the
tables. Afterward the remains are wrapped in the table cloth,
discarded, and a new paper applied.

The Chesapeake Blue Crab is one of the World's delicacies. Just ask
anyone from Maryland. But the real secret is the Old Bay Seasoning which
is used abundantly when the crabs are steamed. You will need to eat four
to six crabs or more to get filled. Thus, crabs are generally sold by
the dozen or even by the bushel.

I am not a big beer drinker - maybe six bottles in a year. However, that
Old Bay Seasoning is made to mix with beer. Usually beer is sold by the
pitcher at a Crab Fest. If you can't take alcohol. consider a
non-alcoholic beer. The unmatched

Still have about 400 original cassette programs on tape too. All in the

I agree totally. Whats more, not only is programming more difficult, but

some of the games (Driller, Knight Lore, JSW, to name a few - running on an

You'd probably be better off picking up a trump card or similar 2nd hand

bought it prior to getting a (then) cheap trump card from Steve Johnson of

I also think you could use it to link the QL and PC versions of the game
Fleet tactical command that he sold.

So, network gaming was first on the QL.;-))

I bet Dilwyn remembers.. He has a great memory for stuff like this.

Hi John,

Unfortunately, these wouldn't be of much use to me as they are undoubtedly
UK based and I'd be making a long distance phone call for my emails -
ouch!! I'm based in Ireland don't forget...

Reminds me of the trouble the Irish branches of Dixons got into recently.
They are supplying the same modems here as they do in the UK - their own
brand PC Line ones. They were dirt cheap (about 15 euro) , so several
hundred people bought one in the run up to Xmas and installed them in their
machines - including the UK based freeserve ISP CD that came with them!!
Unknown to the masses, they were dailing a UK number for their internet
access!! Dixons had neglected to remove the Uk CD-ROM from the box when
they imported them into Ireland, Now dixons are being sued but several
people over it - one case made the papers, where one family got a telephone
bill for 4,500 pounds just after Xmas.

I have a choice of millions of web based free email services, but what I
need is an ISP that I can set up on Lookout Express or whatever mailer I
what to use, and ALSO access via the web when I need to (eg. when
travelling) that is Irish based. I can get either/or, but not both it
appears.

It appears that Unison and Eircom here are expanding their services to web
based email. Good news if its true.

Hi Tony,

The qcelt one is still alive, but the problem is with damn spam - I get
about 1.8Mb of pure unadulterated rubbish into my inbox everyday, and
unless I visit it daily to remove all the spam it quickly eats into my 2Mb
mailbox limit, and when that happens emails bounce due to my mailbox space
being exceeded. At the moment, I'm too busy to do that and can't access the
web to get at hotmail during work hours - its usually after midnight when I
get home :-((

I am looking into other email accounts though these are still limited in

Dilwyn Wrote:-

At least they'd been there much of the day without getting thrown
out...I knocked a pint over within minutes of arrival and nearly got
thrown out before having my first drink! Still, the laptop came in
handy when paying for the food didn't it Darren ;-))

Yeah, I remember Jeremy getting the most expensive steak on the menu and
Stuart refusing to pay for it - The deal was he was paying for Jeremy's
trip as he was a Miracle employee at the time. He got a huge 16oz T-Bone,
and it cost twice what the rest of us were paying for our meals. To settle
the row, Dilwyn got out his then newish 486 Toshiba Laptop with QPC1 on it,
and began using the Calcualtor of QPAC1 to divide the bill.. ;-)

He he, been trying to get Darren to do this for ages, with many false
starts. To anyone fancying a few days in Ireland at that time of year
it's a superb place to be, and the last Irish show was such fun we'll
hardly forget it! I've also wanted to get to one of the USA QL shows
but each and every year something happens to prevent me going, I've
pretty well given up trying now.

Getting a time that suits all is really hard. I so wanted the attendance at
the first show to be high, but at the last minute the dozen or so people
from Northern Ireland who said they'd make it pulled out, as did a few
others from around the country. Anyway, it turned out to be a holiday (and
a p*ss up) for us all more than a show, so thats probably the basis for the
next one - stay tuned... I have been hounded by several people for another
one (Stuart emails me every few months about it!) so it must have been
good.

Anyone wanting to travel to Ireland for the show could do worse than
take a sail and rail (or whatever they're called now) ticket to
Holyhead or south west wales from England. I have found to my surprise
in the past that these can sometimes actually be cheaper than ferry
fare alone due to discounting by the train companies concerned.

This is true, unbelieveably. I found this out quite by accident - I was
used to buying a ticket on the ferry, then a return ticket on the train to
bangor (Dilwyn's house) when I arrived in Holyhead (the rail station is a
few hundred yards from the ferry terminal, all under one roof) I kept doing
this for ages, until one time one of the Stena agents asked me would I be
continuing by rail when I got off the ferry, and I said yes - she then sold
me a Sail and Rail ticket to Bangor return on the ferry, all inclusive
for almost £20 less than the cost of a return ticket on the ferry alone!!
Madness, but true - I still travel this way and its dirt cheap. In fact, at
christmas I visited Dilwyn for a quick day trip to drop over some Xmas
presents - over at 11am and back on the 6.30pm. I got a day return sail and
rail on the ferry and train for only 9 euros!! Thats about a FIVER!

yes, Steve Reyal (who will be editing and compiling the DVD - hes a

It will have custom made menus and biographies of
QL personalities, some funny moments, etc... will even put web links and
some software on it too ;-)

 Anyone interested? ;-))

ONLY if you write a prog to read it on a QL!

Might be difficult ;-)) Will be probably readable via thierry's drivers
for the software part, but the movie player? I doubt it. I assume the Q60

Steve subscribes to the list, but hes shy ;-))

If we all annoy him enough he might make a bold appearance on the list...

day before, that'll teach him to endanger plane safety with that
massive suitcase of his. (it came back in my car so I know all about
it!)

Yeah, damn Ryanair. I paid about 70 euros for a one way ticket to Luton
from Dublin (was coming back on the ferry via Dilwyn's house) so not bad.
Met roadworks on the way to the airport which delayed me by over an hour,
and I missed my flight. OK, I'll pay a small fee and be on my way I thought
- sorry, no late fee, I had to buy another ticket from scratch!! Another
70 euros later, its getting expensive. I go to check in my bags at the
desk, and I'm told I'm overweight (well, I'm a big guy, I could have told
them that ;-))
No... Your suitcase is too heavy sir.. that'll be another 84 euros
please...
WHAT???
I couldn't believe it, but had to pay it as I was already 3 hours late
meeting Steve at Luton.
What really annoyed me was that the flight was EMPTY - there were about 20
people max on the boeing 737 and yet they charged me extra for weight!!

Never again - the contrast between Stena Line and Ryanair is unreal - Stena
line is 48 euros RETURN to wales and that INCLUDES a return ticket on the
train out to Bangor (from Holyhead) near Dilwyn's house. No Contest.

Still, the show was fun, although I didn't sell that much, and I agree with
Chris cave's comment on the food - excellent bit of catering from Roy's
wife and family, and cheap too. That Lemon cake was to die for, and the
Sandwiches... ;-)

we recognised it as a very familiar boat from the Harwich - Hook of

Eindhoven etc trips. It was ideal, but all ruined when they moved to
fast cats, with first sailing at about 10am, and nothing overnight.

Agreed. There are several times when I have wanted to be in Wales early so
we can get a head start on travelling in the morning to a Show and as you
say, there are no overnight ferries. I now get the latest one the night
before (hardly late at a usual time of about 4 or 5pm) Would be much better
if I could get one at about 6 or 7am on the morning we are going to drive
from Dilwyn's house.

I was just remembering the story were Jeremy Reeves (a former miracle
systems employee) and Stuart Honeyball went hill climbing during that
Irish Show. After Roy Steve, Bill, you, and me had packed up, they still
hadn't returned, so we drew a map on a piece of paper as to where the pub
was and for them to meet us there when then returned, and hung it on the
handlebars of their bicycles which they had left outside - only to get to
the pub ourselves and find they had been there most of the day, and were
half sozzled ;-))

Happy days.. Most memorable for the wrong reasons - it was the following
morning we all woke to the news that Princess Diana was dead. I remember
all of us, including Ian Pizer from Switzerland and his wife standing there
watching the TV in disbelief...

Which reminds me, must get the final bookings sorted for a show over here
again this year. Now I am leaving the bank I will have some additional time
on my hands. Anyone have any preference as to when? I was thinking of July
or August, when the weather is good.

[ql-users] Q-Celt Computing News

2002-02-21 Thread Darren . Branagh

Hi all,

We will be in Hove for the QL Workshop on March 3rd. We will have our usual
collection of CD-ROM's for the QL and our collection of 2nd user bits and
pieces and other Software and Hardware.

I also have a large collection of reconditioned PC's to be disposed of
(they are ex bank stock, reformatted and Windows 95/98 installed which I
got cheaply from my employers) They are low end Pentium Processors (100 to
200Mhz) but ideal for a cheap machine to run QPC or Q-Emulator on. They
also have QPC demo versions installed so you can get an idea of the speed
etc.

As these machines are heavy and cumbersome, if you are interested in one,
PLEASE contact me PRIOR to the Show - by this Sunday, February the 24th, to
arrange for me to bring some over for you. I have a full spec list so can
go through what will suit you privately. Email, Fax or phone me for full
details. These are quite cheap, so call if you need one - they make great
backup machines.

A friend who lives in London is coming over by car this weekend, and has
agreed to bring back any heavy stuff I can sell at the show on Sunday -
hence why I ask for you to contact me by the 24th (preferably ASAP) if you
want one. I usually travel over by ferry or plane, so taking them this way
is impossible!!

Cheers,

Darren Branagh.

Norman, I have to be honest and say I'm in total agreement with you.

Occasionally we go off topic, and I admit there have been a few more off
topic emails lately than usual, but these are just as enjoyable as the on
topic ones IMHO. Theres so much more to it all than just the QL, thats just
the start of our common interests. I've often had brief interchanges on
this list about Music with Phoebus, Roy, and Tony, about the celtic ties
with Dilwyn and Norman, and also about the QL!! So What? Its through the
occasional OT email that you get to learn a bit about all those people that
make this list so interesting, and what makes 'em tick - and I value that.
I may be a long younger than most of you, but I like to nostalgitise (is

Re: [ql-users] mouse on q40

2002-01-30 Thread Darren . Branagh

Does Superhermes work on a Q40 Tony?

I'm guessing you missed the subject line.

I thought only Albin's SERMouse software was for standard QL's too. Surely
serial mouse drivers are included with SMSQ(/E) under the PE on a Q40. I
think is maybe isn't a true serial mouse or is broken?

Yes - you need software. Albin Hessler used to sell it - I don't know
if it is now PD.

superHermes includes serial mouse support - but that is not a solution
for you unless you want a fast serial port and IBM lkbd interface.

Re: [ql-users] win format

2002-01-29 Thread Darren . Branagh

The best keyboard/typing one I ever heard was from a friend who works in
the Call Centre for Microsoft. Apparently this story is a legend in there.

This girl calls up to say she can't get Word 6 (back in Win 3.1 days here)
to work on her 286 /386 or whatever it is. She has put Disk 1 of the set of
6 or 7 in the floppy drive, followed the instructions, but nothing happens
- everytime she enters INSTALL from the A: prompt, she gets bad command
or file name.

The Microsoft assistant tries everything, and talks her through the
procedure twice, to no avail, even checks to see if she is inserting the
floppy fully and its the right way up in the drive. Still no joy.

Eventually, frustrated after an hour long attempt, the Microsoft guy says
are you absolutely sure you're typing INSTALL?

To which the girl replies Well, yeah - except my N key is broken, so I'm
using M instead - does that matter?

Amazing how stupid some people can be...

BTW, I have loads more of these if anybodys interested!!

Yes, I have information and also it!
It's the amadeus system.
The rom socket was used as the host for a network,
and then each hardware application get it's own module.
a host for PC was also available,
and you could even connect a QL to a PC via this network.

One of the module is a sound A/D D/A. (mono) (amasound !)
It was provided with a micro and a speaker.

Sound format was highly compressed (about 4 bits per sample,
using a hard-coded proprietary algorithm).

I tried to find information to convert existing sound files into
this format, or even just to be able to perform some volume adjustment
on a recorded sound, and only end up with the conclusion that
unless being able to obtain the full math, it was impossible.

Darren,

Maybe not as useful as at first thought.

Needs a pentium processor and Windows XP/2000/NT4 they do not support Win
3.1/95/98/ME according th the web site http://www.daneprairie.com/ but I
have yet to see if it will still work on Win98.

The utility produces a 'last page' with details of the driver on it in
every
document, but it is free for non-commercial use(which is what I use it for)
and evaluation. Registration costs $35 (US).

HTH.

Norman.

[ql-users] Denki Blocks game

2001-10-31 Thread Darren . Branagh

Hi all,

Has anybody tried the games that are now available via the Sky Digital
remote? They are on the interactive menu, under Sky active (used to be
Open).

There are a few that are pay to use (50p per session, as many games as you
like) but most are free to play - card games and arcade games, and puzzle
games - including one called Denki Blocks - dead simple format, where you
have to join all the blocks by moving about a maze. simple but unfuriating.

As the game is not very graphically demanding, it seems Ideal to be
converted for a QL. Actually quite a few of them are. Take a look and see -
Anybody interested? Dilwyn?

Are you kidding? Of course I'm not married - I have seen what that did to
a perfectly nice bloke like Dilwyn, and that lovely batchelor pad he once

Just ask him how much he's spent on the house since he got
married

Seriously - don't plan on going that route for a long time yet. I just have
a girlfriend and very considerable parents with a big home I use as a
warehouse!

Although I did get called a NERD by my girlfriend Sandra when I brought her
along to the Byfeet QL show last month. She even threatened to dump me if I
ever wore my bright green QUANTA sweatshirt again - really!! (see Dilwyn's

Old Sony TV remotes could do the same thing. They had a small screw inside
which when turned varied the frequency of the signal sent or something. I
remember it caused a panic in the US when loads of cars where nicked using
them. Thats why they changed to the One for All type remote which uses 3
or 4 digit codes for the various tv's etc, and isn't programmed with any of
the ones used by cars.

Is the one about putting coded car stereo's into the freezer to wipe them
true? never tried it.

This is all getting very off topic guys - sorry...

Re: [ql-users] Spectrum Emulators

2001-10-25 Thread Darren . Branagh

Hi All,

Simon Goodwin is probably the best person to contact if you need to get
hold of William James (his emulator was called SPECULATOR, and Simon helped
on the code) They are both involved deeply with Linux and Amigas now, and
that emulator hasn't been updated since about 1993.

If its a PD emulator you're after, ZeXcel is by far the best. Written by
Ergon (Davide Santachiara) and was the one I used for the Spectrum Emulator
CD I did for the QL a while ago (this has about 300Mb of games on it,
ordered alphabetically). Needs the Pointer Environment and a very fast
processor ie. Super Gold card or QXL or a fast QPC machine. Very compatible
with all the files I tried - runs the common .Z80 files found on Spectrum
internet sites just fine.

I always found Spectator a bit crap (sorry Dr. Delhez) and hasn't been
updated in donkeys years - Xtricator, the ZX81 emulator he did was much
better (he did a QL and PC version). Speculator looks good on screen and
even came with a funky little piece of software called QSPEC which allowed
you to read spectrum audio cassettes directly via the QL network ports in
much the same way as a real spectrum, although this had to be purchased for
the full version - the version in the QUANTA library is limited to small
files I think. I'll ask Simon.

ZeXcel is probably the best one to be updated for GD2 use if any are, as
its the most recent of all QL Spectrum emulators, and works on all systems
I've tried, plus its pointer driven, and overall is very polished. It
already uses some clever shading techniques to give the illusion of 8
colours of the Spectrum when you are actually running it in MODE 4 on the
QL. There are a vast range of configurable options in it - ie. you can run
games in monochrome to speed them up if running on a slower system.

Maybe Davide can throw more light on this if he is listening. Davide?

Does anyone know of the status of the Spectrum emulators on the QL?
Specifically:

1. Were they released to the pd?

Some were, I think the zmht wasn't. Most of the spectrum emulators
came from Davide Santachiara's company Ergon Development in Italy.

Spectator was by Dr Carlo Delhez (he of QL Ungif and Zxtricator ZX81
emulator fame)

There is another Spectrum emulator by William James, don't remember
its name.

ZexCel from Ergon is freeware.

2. Are the authors still involved in the QL scene.

In most cases, no. Dr Carlo Delhez has his own Zxtricator website and
may be contactable via that. Davide Santachiara is contactable (I
think he's still ont his list), but not very active at the moment,
while I don't know about William James

3. If they are, and if they read this list, would it be possible to
update
(especially the Dynamic Compiler emulator (It was the ZM/Ht IIRC)) to
use
the GD2... (and maybe some other roms apart from the mainstream 48
and 128 K)?

Darren Branagh has compiled a Spectrum CD recently and may be able to
add further information.

I had the pleasure of meeting Freddy Vachha (formerly Mr Digital
Precision Ltd) the other day at work. We had a brief chat while he was
waiting for a train.

Although he would hardly describe himself as an active QLer these
days, but he did say quite plainly that he still has a QL and Gold
Card, and still uses Perfection which he described as less frustrating
at times than many word processors he has used.

He said he was unaware of QL2000 last year, or at least if anyone had
mentioned it he'd forgotten about it, and may well have attended had
he known. He is open to invitations to such future events, as he still
has a soft spot for the QL, despite not using his that often these
days.

Those who know Freddy will be glad to know that he is still his usual
happy, bouncy self, happily making money (forgotten what he said he
was up to and where he lived now, should have written it all down and
used it all in evidence!)

Re: [ql-users] Hotmail

2001-10-22 Thread Darren . Branagh

Ian -

Does she use Hotmail from a web cafe etc, or does she have email at home
and just uses hotmail?

The reason I ask is that she may be composing her emails elsewhere, ie. at
home on a non-internet capable PC, and then taking a floppy down to her
local email centre or cafe and attaching her pre-written emails to save
time online (I used to do this on my old black box QL years ago, when it
was typically £7 per hour in Ireland to use email or internet, long before
I could afford it at home). I could send off a dozen letters be email this
way from a few minutes of online time - worth its weight in gold when
you're a poor student as I was at the time.

Ask her how she is sending her emails and composing them - that may reveal
something.

Hi

My sister in Sydney sends me email from Hotmail.com and it always arrives
in my Compuserve mail as an attachment. I have made a trial sending mail
from Hotmail
to myself at Compuserve and it arrives correctly (not attachment). This
seems queer.

Any ideas why this happens and is there a cure?

Sorry it is not a QL subject!

Absolutely Geoff - no offense intended Francois, we're just pulling yer

Actually, it all goes to show what a truly international bunch we all are -

I wonder does Clive Sinclair still know we exist, ie. QUANTA, and QL users

No need to apologise, François. To put the non-Dutch speakers out of their
misery, I think Joachim sent a personal email accidentally by the group.

All he was doing was asking for a bit of advice configuring QPC for use
with
a Belgian keyboard.

Forgive us if we made a bit of fun of it. It's the way we English, Irish,
Welsh, Scots and Geordies are.

Eerlijk gezegd, in het Nederlands, een beetje flauw van ons.

You should buy a copy of one or two of Roy's CD's to get a feel for what he
was up to - some great lyrics and vocals. I keep mine in the car now, its
grown on me no end. Excellent Stuff.

Roy Weard and Last Post's Fallout is good - I think Roy can supply them.

Some absolutely fabulous guitar stuff on this CD by Steve Bensusan. Not to
mention a Picture in the lyric booket of one long haired semi-naked
frontman who bares a slight resemblance to the boss of Q-Branch..

Somehow I can't see Roy singing I wish it could be Xmas Everyday...

2001-09-21 Thread DARREN BRANAGH 6798433

Q-CELT COMPUTING NEWSSEPTEMBER 2001

Q-Celt Will be at the Byfleet Show on 23/09/01 (this Sunday!) with some new
products!

The ZeXcel ZX Spectrum Emulator CD-ROM is now released, and contains the latest
release of the ZeXcel Emulator (by Ergon Developments, now freeware) as well as
every Spectrum Game, Utility, and Application I could get my hands on - over
350MB WORTH!!. This is Version 1.00. It will have a special introductory price
at the Show, and 50% of the profits will also be donated to Charity.

The Phoebus Dokos Interactive Fantasy CD has been revised. It includes a full
colour sleeve designed by Phoebus and a new 37Mb animation sequence!! Again, a
portion of the profits on this CD are being donated to Chidrens Charities.

Dilwyn has upgraded his Emulator CD to 1.5, to include some additional recent
new programs. Upgrades are available at the Show.

We have started work on a ZX81 Emulator CD, and also have a QL Encyclopedia
CD-ROM in the pipeline, converted from some PC material, and hopefully using a
new version of Dilwyn Jones' VIEWER_obj which will display hyperlinks as in HTML
documents for smooth and easy navigation.

We will also have all our usual (or unusual!) range of 2nd User Hardware and
Cables.. and some 2nd User Software too.

And a certain Dilwyn Jones will be copying a few disks... (schhhush.. thats a
secret..) ;-))

We are also looking for new ideas for possible future CD-ROM's. If there is
anything in particular you'd like to see released, please tell us - we'll
endevour to provide you with what you want.

Many thanks, and see you all on Sunday!

Speaking of holding icepacks in one hand, ask Darren Branagh to

Very Funny... The incident Dilwyn is referring is similar to yours Bill, I
grabbed a soldering iron by the wrong end WHILE IT WAS STILL PLUGGED IN.. I
asked a colleague in work to unplug it about 10 minutes earlier, but he
unplugged the wrong plug!!

See Dilwyn's text file of Murphys Laws.. Quote: Hot soldering Irons look
exactly the same as cold ones.

Learnt a trick from a friend in the hospital though - soak a six inch length of
brush handle or wood that is easy to grip in some cold water, then stick it in
the freezer overnight - the water in the wood freezes and you get a nice
grippable burn soother...

This was about a 6 weeks ago, and I still have a small scar. Nasty..

he needs it for work purposes.

I know from previous mails that the status of these DP programs is somewhat of a
grey area - I am not even sure of the author of this particular package. Can
anyone throw any light on this?

Failing this, does anybody have a legal copy for sale, in good working order
with documentation? This customer is a QL user only and as a result does not
have email access, hence my imvolvement.

2001-07-05 Thread DARREN BRANAGH 6798433

Hi All,

Great to see another new user popping up - You're very, very welcome Paul. I too
was a little daunted by the chat on the list when I first joined, some time ago
now, but soon came to realise how helpful all the subscribers are.

Many of them have been QL users from day one - back in the early 80's. Several
are active QL hardware and software developers, and a few more are QL traders -
myself included - and deal in Ql software and hardware at various Ql workshops
around the country during the year, and a few on the continent also.

The thing I like about this list is info is so accessible and people are so
ready to help on ANY level without making you feel like an idiot. Something I
feel is sadly lacking on PC circles - either you're an expert on those lists or
you shouldn't bother. Feel free to ask any question you like, about anything you
want QL, and I guarantee someone will answer quickly - usually several people
will.

As the others, I suggest you subscribe to QL Today, fulls details on dilwyns
website as previously mentioned. Also QUANTA, the QL users and tinkers a-
ssociation, is well worth joining - they have an extensive software library
with hundreds of QL programs that the librarian will send you. Costs only £14 a
year to join and you get a monthly magazine as well. see www.quanta.uni.cc

I also suggest you try and make it to a QL show - as talking face to face and
seeing the new hardware and software is often much better and more easily
understood. The next one in the UK is in the south of England in Byfleet at the
end of September.

So, Paul - feel free to ask anything whenever you like. Remember, the only
stupid question is the one you didn't ask.. :-))

Cheers,

Darren.

Hi DARREN,

They are not PD. Digital Precision never owned the copyright and
it remains with the authors. Chas, Gerry and I have released
some programs (Turbo, Editor, etc) as widely advertised but
they remain copyright, and other programs can only be
copied with the permission of the authors. So ask nicely,
and say what you're going to do - but don't expect commercial
or unrestricted copying rights to be granted.

Hi All,

I would concur with Tony - Freddy would certainly sue, all depends on if he

have reverted to Simon et al as the authors.

Simon doesn't subscribe to this list, but I have forwarded this email to him for

2001-05-29 Thread DARREN BRANAGH 6798433

Hi All,

I am at present, like most of the traders, gearing up for the Montreal North
American QL show on Saturday.

Having never been to a NA Show before, I am unsure of quantities of items to
bring along - and with severe weight restrictions on my flight, my usual
enormous flight suitcase is definitely out this time :-)

Can I therefore appeal to anyone visiting the Show and wanting something in pa-
rticular to PLEASE email me and let me know to ensure I have enough stock. You
can get me on this address or on [EMAIL PROTECTED] up until Thursday
night (UK time). Don't be disapointed!

Many thanks, and see you all on Saturday!!

[ql-users] QL Membrane PSU Problem

2001-05-02 Thread DARREN BRANAGH 6798433

To the new QL'er with the Membrane and PSU problem :-

I have a Dead QL with a good working membrane - at least it was before the QL
itself passed away at Christmas! - I also have an unused QL Power Supply.

I can post both to you for the cost of postage only, ie. both items provided
free. However, the PSU is quite heavy and will probably cost a small fortune to
post to you from here in Ireland. The membrane is still attached to the keyboard
inc. the top half of the casing, so best to post this as is for protection.

Email me privately if you are interested in this and we'll work something out.

LineDesign is good value for the money, sure. But to be honest you'll find a
more feature packed Graphics Program on the front cover of most decent PC
Monthly's now for no more than 4 or 5 quid. Paint Shop Pro, PhotoExpress, Adobe
PhotoDeluxe 2.0, Serif PagePlus and DrawPlus, and EasyDTP have all featured in
full versions on PC Mags recently.

And Corel Draw is still king despite the price.

The QL has never been a great graphics machine in my opinion - thats not what
attracted me to it, and I came into the QL fold later than most people. However,
I agree that a new program or update of LineDesign is now needed to take
advantage of GD2.

Darren.

Hi All,

I am travelling to the AGM Show in Portishead with Dilwyn as usual, but the nice
bit is that he is here in Ireland on holiday staying with me for a few days
first - hence I have a car I can fill going back to the Show, but not on the way
back again obviously.

I have several big pieces of QL hardware I want rid of - Mostly Monitors, Tower
Cases, etc. If anybody wants any of this, please email me before Friday morning,
and I will bring it across for you. Normally I wouldn't have the car, so this is
your chance is you want any of this clobber :-))

You will HAVE TO TAKE WHATEVER YOU ORDER - I don't want to be stuck with this
and no way to get it back to Ireland again!

This is basically what I have. Most items are free to be taken away, some
obviously will have a price (QXL2 for example, but they will be cheap - I
promise!!) :-

Microvitec Cub 14 Colour Monitor (white) on Swivel Stand/Base wired for QL

TATUNG 14 Colour/Green Screen (Switchable) Monitor with QL Cable

Microvitec 14 cube-like metal cased monitor with internal Audio/Speakers

Empty PC Tower Case, suitable for Building a QL, with 200W PSU and Floppy

Several SER1 to Parallel Printer Interfaces for the QL

QXLII (25Mhz, 68040, 8Mb, etc.) Emulator Card for PC with network ports etc.

Loads of original QL Power Supplies (about 5)

Tower Cased 486 PC with 8Mb RAM, floppy and hard drives, Windows 95 loaded.

Single Floppy drive unit (metal cased white with PSU and cable etc.)

QL with Keyboard 90 Interface fitted

several PC Keyboards (both PS/2 and 5-pin DIN)

Give me a shout if you see anything you want,

Sounds fine to me. I'm somewhat of a "Heinz 57" myself, Born in Northern
Ireland to a Catholic Father and Protestant Mother (That was fun!) and
holding dual passports as a result - British and Irish, although I don't
think I renewed the British one last time - I read somewhere that British
people are the 2nd most likely to be shot in a hijack situation - really!
(after the Americans!). I speak fluent English and almost-fluent Irish (its
in steep decline over here, so don't get to use it much - unlike Dilwyns
Welsh, which he can use virtually anywhere, shame really...)

Also intrigued that Robert knew the Welsh for London (it's quite close
to the original name, whatever language that came from).

Yes, had to unearth that Welsh-English dictionary you gave me to find that
out :-))

Anyway, 'QL' is the universal language on this list (says he desperate

Agreed!!

at close range like a 15 inch display they claim.

IBM manufacture these I think - A few of the staff at the Bank Of Ireland in
Dublin Airport have them, and use them to do foreign exchange for customers
in the actual airport lounges - They have a 2.5" Hard drive on their belt
which holds the info and what business they have done for the day, and they
keep a bag around their shoulder with various amounts of foreign cash in it.
These ones aren't radio linked, so a multi core cable runs down your back to
the HD and processor on the belt. They are voice controlled, so no keyboard
either. A sure fire hit for a mugging I would have thought, but apparently
it works well and they have had no problems (yet!).

[ql-users] Emulators CD

2001-03-09 Thread Darren Branagh

From: "Dilwyn Jones" [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I am taking advantage of the extra time to add more free QL software
to the CD to make best use of space (Darren will love me, it will now
take him twice as long to burn each CD!)

Great :-(( No, I think this is a great idea, and the more that's on it, the
better.

The Emulators CD would benefit by getting a mention in a PC magazine.
Thereby alerting those we need to attract back to the QL.

I would hope to do this, but I want the CD to be available first. The
lead in time for magazines will then build in a few weeks where any
initial problems with the CD (e.g. removal of any copyrighted material
inadvertently included or significant bugs found). It's so late
already I don't think a few more weeks wait will matter too much.

Simon Goodwin has managed to get us a brief plug in the next issue of Linux
Format Magazine, which he now writes for. Basically it has uQLx on the Cd,
so has an interest for Linux users. I hope to try and get Simon to put uQLx
and the freeware on the LF cover CD if I can.

Cheers,

Darren.

[ql-users] Hove Show Apologies

2001-03-05 Thread Darren Branagh

Hi All,

By Now, you all will have noticed my absence at the Hove Show -
unfortunately this couldn't be helped for two reasons..

Firstly, I was seriously snowed in!! About 10-12 inches of snow in places,
and 2-3 foot drifts at my main gate. I'm been snowbound since last Tuesday,
and only got the car out yesterday morning. I was without electricty and
phone lines too.

Secondly, the foot and mouth crisis - its been generally frowned upon for
anybody to make any non-essential travel to the UK from Ireland by the
government.

Apologies to anybody who expected to see me there, but I couldn't help
it. I had hoped to launch the Emulators CD there, but this will now have
to wait until the QUANTA AGM instead.

I am still without email, and am sending this from a neighbours. The
electricity is back, but My Modem was fried during the on/off power cuts
over the last few days. Wonderful, isn't it?

Hi Malcolm,

So, you bought an Osaris! You may remember I bought one just prior to the
London QL Show and showed it to you and Ken Brickwood in Ken's house after
the Show.

I love mine, and even asked about the possibility of an EPOC version of QPC
as a result :-))

What do you mean by RiscStation though? Surely you mean the EPOC one, made
by Oregon Scientific and based on the design of the Psion 5?

The Z80 Emulator for Speccy stuff is excellent - email me privately and I'll
send you some more excellent links.

Using QPC, switching data is easy - just use the Pc Link and then read it in
to QPC in MS-DOS mode - in fact, its even easier now QPC can read the native
DOS file directory as DOS1_ !!

I download ebooks to mine and read them on the train each morning -
currently reading a Tale of Two Cities again!! :-))

Subject: [ql-users] OT - OSARIS pocket computer
Date: Fri, 2 Feb 2001 21:46:21 +

Hi All,

I recently purchased this pocket computer - RiscStation OSARIS.

Check these web sites for information :-

www.riscstation.co.uk

www.oregonscientific.co.uk

It a neat and well built pocket sized computer, that probably has more
features than the now well know Psions. The shape is a 'clam shell',
folding out to reveal screen and keyboard.

The keyboard, for the size, with a very positive feel. A touch
sensitive screen with a pen is the main input device for navigating.

Memory is a 8Mb ROM "internal disk", called the 'C Drive'; to which
Compact Flash Memory Cards can be added as 'Drive D'.

It has a range of standard applications that are compatible with PC and
others, such as Word, Sheet, Data. With a range of the normal
applications like Agenda, Jotter, Sketch, Calc, etc.

In addition it has Comms, and Email, Fax and Web browsing ( the latter
has to be loaded in off a supplied CD-ROM ). It sychronises with a PC
or other computer via either a serial link or infra red. So that
information is easily exchanged in either direction.

This evening I downloaded a free z80 emulator for Spectrum games, which
installed itself as another application quite painlessly :-)

It uses the EPOC system, and includes a programme language based on
procedures to create your own software.

It uses a RISC processor, so software is supplied to link to both RISC
OS and PC. Price is 170ukp.

I'm impressed with it, and I have used it non-stop to be able to carry
information with me to meetings, etc.

I can now see the potential that different OS's than those supplied by
Bill G have in markets like this. Was it Arnould who has been
proclaiming the possiblity of a portable QL based OS machine ?

Perhaps there is hope to link it to a QL ? I haven't yet experimented
with importing data from QL software, via a PC format, either.

All in all, it is a real joy to use. Everything is so effortless :-)
