Re: Starting Introduction to Contributing to Apache OpenOffice Module

2021-02-24 Thread Arrigo Marchiori
Hello Steve, and welcome!

As a person knowledgeable with C and C++, you may help with fixing
bugs, implementing new functions, or also carrying out additional --
but very important -- tasks such as documenting code.

If you want to get started with the (huge!) OpenOffice code base, I
suggest you begin by building it for the first time.

The Wiki has general build instructions:
https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/Building_Guide_AOO
as well as step-by-step instructions for the most used platforms:
https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/Building_Guide_AOO#Step-by-Step_Building_Guide_for_Different_Platforms

I believe that the "trunk" branch is the best starting point, because
it is where the most active development should be carried out.

I also suggest to subscribe to the dev@ mailing list so that... you
can complain on that list if anything in the build instructions is not
clear! ;-)

We are looking forward to hear you there. Or also here if you have any
other general questions!

Best regards.

Hi
I am Steve. Now retired and hoping to put something back. I have been using
C/C++ on and off since 1988, so do not presume me to be some sort of C++ Guru :)

Basically I have done a bit of everything in computing - (to ensure I stayed

Mostly, I use OpenOffice as a preference to Excel - I much prefer the
semi-colon separator in formulii to MS’s comma.

Oh, and my 3 faults are being a Yorkshireman, modest and having no sense of

Greetings Robert and Welcome to Apache OpenOffice (AOO). We can definitely use
someone of your background and experience in Technical Writing. We are
currently in the process of redefining the process by which we create
documentation, especially the Users Guides.

We do have have some orientation pages at the
following:https://openoffice.apache.org/orientation/index.html. Levels 1 and 2
give a basic understanding of of how the project works, and an introduction to
the Apache Software Foundation (ASF) and the and the infrastructure that it
provides to support the projects. Then the level 3 pages get into the
different ways to contribute to AOO. The one of most interest for know would
be the Introduction to Documentation.

It gives an overview of how the documentation team works and the
infrastructure tools that we most use. It will suggest that you subscribe to
the doc@ mailing list, but I strongly suggest that you also subscribe to dev@
mailing list as well. Instructions can be found at
https://openoffice.apache.org/mailing-lists.html#development-mailing-list-public.

I look forward to working closely with you as we move forward on writing
professional quality documentation for AOO.

Hi-

I’m a contract technical writer located outside of Minneapolis Minnesota, USA.
I have a Masters in Technical Communication from Minnesota State University in
Mankato Minnesota.

I have worked in the medical device and software fields, but it was some time
ago.

I’m interested in joining the team to brush up on my tech writing skills and to
contribute to the cause. I’ve been using OpenOffice for several years, so I
have experience in Writer and Calc.

The primary programs I use professionally are FrameMaker, InDesign, and Word. I
have also had some experience in GitHub and Stack Overflow.

So first of all we see everyone who wants to develop OpenOffice as equal.
There is no Hierarchy whatsoever.

We function by meritocracy standards. You earn renown by doing competent
actions. Not having competence is not negative. So you do not loose
anything by asking and building competence, because building competence is
a competent action.

I like to summarize this setup as meritocratic anarchic organization.

Our vision is to improve OpenOffice. Nothing more nothing less.

So first: Basic Infrastructure. The ASF uses the quite archaic tech of
Email Mailing lists. We use it because they have proven their worth over a
long period of time.

https://www.apache.org/foundation/mailinglists.html

Our main communication channel is d...@openoffice.apache.org. All
important discussions are made on the dev mailing list.

We have also freenode channel: #dev.openoffice.org and a slack channel
for faster communication. I have to check what to do to provide slack
invites. AFAIK there are no restrictions if anyone of you have interest.

So first step in learning to code with OpenOffice is imho learning to
build OpenOffice.

For building OpenOffice I recommend our guide:

https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/Building_Guide_AOO

https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/Building_Guide_AOO#Step-by-Step_Building_Guide_for_Different_Platforms

The Operating systems matter:

OS2 I think is the most difficult followed by Windows, then comes MacOSx
and the easiest I think is Linux. FreeBSD should be also quite easy to
build.

Please take that into account if you run into issues.

Of course you can start your own way into AOO, the code is available on
Github and you can create pull request any time as you like. We will review
as soon as possible.

https://github.com/apache/openoffice

What to do on the code can be figured on Bugzilla:
https://bz.apache.org/ooo/

But I usually do not know where to start so I have created a Task list on
Jira
https://issues.apache.org/jira/projects/OPENOFFICE/issues/OPENOFFICE-76?filter=allopenissues

current activities are reflected here:
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/Development+Improvement

If there are questions ask them. There are no bad questions. OpenOffice
contributing to AOO is a challenge due to age and history of the project.
We help as much as we can.

We had a lot off contributors over time and you might be the next
contributor to this awesome project. :)

The oldest code in OpenOffice is maybe older then Microsoft Office. What
I want to say, it might be not as easy as you might think to improve
what youz want to improve.

We recommend to build OpenOffice from code for starters. It is quite a
challenge since our build system is aged and we are in the middle of
changes.

Also we welcome everything that you seem fit to change. For Code changes
we request a Test driven development approach. We use google test library.

Welcome to OpenOffice. I hope to read from you and you hand in patches.

Dear,

I have been using openoffice for more than 10 years now. My primary
interests is to edit/typeset Bible using openoffice (since version 2.0 now
4.1.5) You may check out the oo converted pdf bible of my works at fojc.net.
For years, I have been struggling with the "centernotes" layout and
formatting issues (you may check out what it looks like from fojc.net bible
download). In shorts, the centernotes that anchored with paragraph might
overlap (or collided) each other from left column and right column
paragraphs. I have been trying to manually move the centernotes around for
years. But to a point, now, I think I better to contribute to source code of
openoffice writer to "automate" this centernotes formatting/typesetting
work. I am anxious to solve this problem fundamentally. I have been
programming in all kind languages for years. C++ was one of my first few
programming languages in college and in my early career. I believe I can
pick it up again very quickly. I have Computer Science in imaging processing
background with Ph.D degree and actively using Python and OpenCV and
occasionally in my hobby working on Elixir on Pheonix as well as ruby on
rails. I hope I can contribute to oo writer to a point that one day I don't
need to manually shuffling the "centernotes" any more ; ))

Let me know how can I get started : perhaps in Text Document => Text Frame
formatting code review ?

Thanks for pointing me the starting point.

The biggest challenge we have is code development. And we always

contribution in this area we do offer a first entry challenge:
Building OpenOffice at your home. (Guide: [1]) If you get stuck, the
most valueable advise is to ask on the lists.

The most important list for developers is the dev mailing [2] list,
but you are welcome to ask on this list, too. Kepp in mind to mention
if you are not subscribed. Sometimes we miss this. Also if you have
other questions, or do not understand something ask them openly in the

After a successfull build I suggest we talk what you can do next. I
have a list on wiki with fun topics, plus we have some other fun stuff
in reserve that focus on code enhancing. You pick then the next
challenge to take. Step by step. I hope that sounds fine to you.

We do use SVN for versioning, but we offer a github repo, where you
