Hi MaryAnn, Damage to a blood vessel can cause bruising-discoloration reaction in the area, and a clot could be a an internal reaction to a bruising of the vessel, too; comme-si, comme-sa, huh?. It needn't be a bursting of the vessel, just a bit of leakage into the tissues would give a reaction.
