I don't agree with quadro vs geforce part. Not at all. I read issues you were describing but I have never ever in my life had any similar things happening. And I also used couple different quadros as well and never seen much improvement inside 3d aps, at all. Not performance wise nor issue wise.

Then you should really change to Maya 2016 Ext2. AKA 2016.5. I'm not sure what are you doing, but here the transition from 2016 to 2016.5 has been totally smooth and the data is retro compatible with 2016, and the selection is not as bad as it used to. I've heard a lot that those kind of problems
