Re: [biofuel] Personal matter/opinion

2002-08-07 Thread Appal Energy

Odd how everything is connected.

Argentina exported literally boatloads of excess honey from
plentiful harvests several years ago to the US (oddly enough via
large distribibutors such as the Sioux Honey Association coop,
aka Sioux Bee Honey, Krogers, etc.) at bargain basement prices.

This in turn collapsed the US honey market, forcing hundreds of
large US bee farmers out of business. Four years later the
beeswax and honey market still hasn't recovered to its previous
price levels.

But bee farming members of the Sioux Honey Association faired
rather nicely while their neighbors and friends in the honey
industry went belly up.

Boom and bust all this international agricultural trade. Notice
who goes bust and who goes boom.

No problem at all.

I«ve received a job proposal for a firm in Virginia, USA, which I
must answer by tomorrow, and would like to know out of American
members« experience how much the cost of living would roughly be
there (per month... rent, food, some leisure, savings) to know if
the proposal is reasonable or not. I«m 24 years old and single.

Thanks to all in advance for your help.

Hope you get good advice. Best of good luck with the job.

Christian, it depends on where you live in Virginia. In the DC area , for
example, you will encounter one of the highest housing cost places in the
U.S. I suggest you try the URL below:

Http:://www.bestplaces.net/html/citycompare.asp
Here you can compare any two cities from a wide variety of choices within the
50 states. This will give you the detailed comparisons such as you appear to
be wanting between a city that you know and compare it to a city close by or
in the city about which you are wanting to know the costs.

Good luck.

Re: [biofuel] Personal matter/opinion

2002-08-06 Thread Grahams

This is short notice for such a big leap isn't it? However, you must be
more specific. I live in the middle of VA. Cost of living varies greatly
depending on the county, etc. I am figuring you will be working in a city,
perhaps Northern VA? If you live in the city it will cost more in rent but
less in gas. Many people here commute from rural areas. I doubt you can
function without a car altogether. Food for one person is not too
expensive if you cook your own mostly. Do you want an apartment, house or
just a room in someone's house? (Nearby, maybe we could help you out. ) I
rent out three houses to families for $650-$1175 a month (depending on
size). A room with shared housing privileges(kitchen, yard for pets, etc)
goes about $350. There are cheaper things but it takes some searching.
E-mail me if you would like to ask more questions.

 Hi Christian,

Heres a couple of sites from the United States Census Bureau.

These two sites can provide you with County and State
Median household money income, 1997 model-based estimate
and you may want to look at Persons per household
 listed on the same page.

 Locate a county by
Enter a ZIP code, city or town (place name) and select State
 http://quickfacts.census.gov/cgi-bin/lookup?state VA (Virgina)

Or if you know the county and interested in surrounding areas

 Virginia County Map
 http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/maps/virginia_map.html
 County and State
Median household money income, 1997 model-based estimate
and Persons per household and more data

 For example -- Fairfax County
Median household money income, 1997 model-based estimate $71,057 - VA State
$40,209
 http://www.fedstats.gov/qf/states/51/51059.html

Another location in Fairfax County -- Fairfax City
Median household money income, 1997 model-based estimate $61,099 - VA State
$40,209
 http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/51/51600.html

 --

 Another site
New! 1-click access to census, schools, economic info and more!
 http://www.epodunk.com
which might be helpful with other questions including housing or
apartment rent, which probably requires a one year lease deposit
might or not include utilities -- water, electricity, gas, parking, etc,
listed on the right side bar.

For example -- Richmond, VA (Virgina)
 http://www.epodunk.com/cgi-bin/genInfo.php?locIndex=25664
 Moving
  New window:
  Apartments in Richmond
  Homes for sale

 --

Now as for public transportation (bus) and bicycle trails
 that depends on your location.

Christian,

If you are talking in the vicinity of the beltway, bank on
$1,000 a month minimum for an apartment and utilitites. If you
are looking for a small New England style home, bank on a
neighborhood of $1,500 a month or more, which may or may not
cover utility costs.

Rents are rather tall anywhere within a 40 mile radius of DC
(commute distance). Occasionally you can find something
affordable. Helps to know someone in the area who can keep their
eye out.
