[OSM-talk] England, Wales, Scotland borders
Hi, For days now I've been trying to figure out how I could render borders between England, Wales and Scotland using OSM data, but I keep stumbling into same issues. Frankly, I think the way these things are tagged in UK is a mess (I don't know what the situation is in other places): 1. Borders between these countries are tagged with the same admin_level=4 as that of subdivisions inside England (example: North East England, http://osm.org/go/evykef-?relation=151164). Now I'm not a constitutional expert, but I think Wales and Scotland represent different level of territorial division than just a collection of England's counties. And anyway, the http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:boundary%3Dadministrative states level 4 is used for England/Scotland/Wales border and doesn't mention anything else. 2. There is no way to render JUST land borders. Maritime borders (territorial waters) are tagged exactly the same way as their continental counterparts. And even if you accept this limitation and decide to render territorial waters they are usually cut off in the available UK OSM extracts. 3. England's coast is also tagged as a border, but Wales' and Scotland's isn't. Please take my criticism as a constructive one. I'm trying to use OSM data in a real-life situation and I think borders are some of the more important data, since they are usually visible in smaller-scale maps (but usually _without_ marked territorial waters). The way UK's borders are now tagged, the only way to render them usefully would be to manually collect a list of OSM ways' IDs. Of course I could go and edit these things myself, but since I'm not usually covering this part of the world, I don't want to step on other people's toes :) Best regards, Igor -- http://igorbrejc.net ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

[OSM-talk] Landuse areas etc. abutting highways
I'm seeking advice as to best practice in the following type of situation: As an increasingly common example, now that people are getting around to mapping areas such as leisure=, natural= and landuse= ... Consider the case of landuse=farm on one side of a highway (say a secondary road) and leisure=golf_course on the other side of the highway. The easiest way to map this - and the one usually adopted it seems - is to make the boundaries of the farm and the golf course both coterminous with the highway so that the three lines are superimposed in the editors (not quite sure how the various renderers handle this) and the representation of the highway has zero width. There are, however, potential problems with this (quite apart from the slightly clumsy editing when several ways are superimposed) where detailed mapping would ideally show that in real life the golf course and the farm do not in fact have a common boundary but both are, for example, separated by hedges (which may or may not be mapped) from the road. It is clearly possible to map the farm and the golf course as separated areas with the road mapped as a line drawn between them - i.e. the mapping has three separate parallel lines. This assists with mapping more clearly features such as junctions of paths with the road (and stiles on paths at such junctions). But is this unduly messy or does it create rendering issues (e.g. if the lines are not absolutely parallel and just far enough apart to render with random gaps between, say, the golf course and the road. The situation is even trickier where, say, a farm has been mapped as a single area (same land use) with, say, a road crossing it - whereas in practice, this is two separate farms - one on each side of the road - that may at some stage need to be named separately. Then we have to go back and split the area, etc. This seems to be a quite a generic issue and I am wondering how people see the pros and cons of (a) the simple approach with coterminous lines giving a notional zero width to the highway, vs. (b) the more precise approach of mapping the areas either side of the highway as areas that are separate both from each other and from the highway. In practice, almost all mapping seems to use approach (a) - but would approach (b) be easier for subsequent editing and addition of detail, and rather clearer as it avoids superimposed ways and potential editing errors? Well, anything that isn't rendered is of no use to end-users of the map, so the principle you're trying to apply here: map for the renderer is deprecated pretty universally. In practice, almost all mapping seems to use approach (a) - but would approach (b) be easier for subsequent editing and addition of detail, and rather clearer as it avoids superimposed ways and potential editing errors? I think that the correct way is b) - three separate lines. Since if the border of the farm also is somehow displayed (for example if it is fenced, thus having fenced=yes or barrier=fence tags), in the first case (all lines joined to one line) the border would go through center of the road, resulting in artifacts like fence in the middle of road. b) is easier for editing, more reflecting the reality and surprisingly, it also renders well - if the road is thicker than the gap, then it looks exactly like a), if not, then there may be some gap, but often there is at least some sidewalk or something, so the gap is justifiable - one can view the gap as sort of sidewalk :) And if the renderer knows proper width of the road (width=... tag) and can support it, there would be no or very minimal gap. If not, then the size of the gap will at least give you hint of size of the road (or exactly, size of the space where the road is). If you don't want to do micro mapping the best approach is to create a multipolygon relations for the farm and one for the golf course. use the portion of the highway in the polygon as outer way and delete the duplicate ways. While this may look reasonable, this is IMHO a bad idea. I've seen once an area where someone made this by sharing parts of landuse=residential (the area) with many roads and forests touching it. I tried to fix it in JOSM (the lines were very rough and there was usable aerial imagery for that area to draw more precise boundary), but the mess was too great and I ultimately gave up (tried to move stuff from relations to create separate polygon but it just ended up as a big mess). Unless current tools improve a lot their multipolygon handling, I think this way sharing in multiple multipolygons should be rather avoided. As a mapper, I want a much more structured, well defined tagging scheme. - When I use a key, I want to know precisely what type of value is expected. - When I have entered a tag, I want to see in the editor immediately whether the tagging is valid according to approved rule, proposed rule, or not according to anything at all. - When I spend time mapping, I want to know that the data I enter is useful, and can be used for rendering, for route planning, and for future interactive maps. Clearly tags must be according to a structure if that is going to happen. - I want the editor tools to support and enforce the tagging structure. - I want that the tagging dialogs for editor tools can be easily localised to different languages, attracting non-English speaking mappers. Because I think more mappers will increase the probability for success for OSM, and hence increase my own motivation. - I DO NOT WANT TO SEARCH TALK-MAIL ARCHIVES TO LEARN HOW TO TAG! I think the tagging schema should be formally described. It should be a pragmatic mix of strict encoded values and free text values. It must of course be based on the existing (but loosely defined) tagging structure. The tagging structure must be represented as tables in the OSM database, along with a XML API. Of course, such a scheme will not do away with the problem of classifying real world things. It will always be cases where it is difficult to classify what you se as a track or as a road, as a service road or as unclassified road, and so on. And making the Grand Unified Hierarchy will always fail at some places. But once I have selected an option, I want to know that it has a well defined meaning in the OSM System. Some ideas from the top of my head: Data types: Every key should be assigned a type (or class). Could be: - boolean - enumeration - numeric - string - free text. Boolean is yes/no. Editor tools should present a Boolean key as a checkbox. Many of the existing tags fall into enumeration. “highway” is a enumeration. An enumeration may often include a “unclassified” value (e.g. building=yes). Editor tools should present an enumeration as a listbox of some sort. The defined values should be stored in the OSM database. It should be possible to enter new values, but then the system should prefix the value with “proposed:” If proposed values are approved later, then administrator can remove the “proposed:” prefix globally. Idea editor tool: Approved values marked green, previously proposed values yellow, other value is red. Numeric is a decimal number. Editor tools should enforce digits only. Subclasses may be useful: Numeric:meters, numeric:kilometres, numeric:currency. Currency obviously need special handling. A toll fee should always specify what currency is referred. String is typical like name, address, house number. Editor tools should present a single line text input. Telephone numbers, URIs, Wikipedia references may be modelled as a string, or as separate classes, or as subclasses of a string, to be discussed. Language versions may sometimes exist. Free text is end-user-description, mapper-note etc. More or less complete sentences. Language versions may often exist. Editor tools should present a multiline, scrollable text input. Comment BTW: Tag-typing can make tag-use-statistics more to the point: Statistics on the most used enumeration values is useful. Most used phone numbers/street names are less useful… I think a multilevel key scheme should be formalised. ‘:’ seems to be a de-facto standard. Special purpose mapping should use a sub-key-space. Hiking, climbing, ornithology, agriculture, archaeology and so on are examples of special interest groups which should be assigned their own toplevel tag, to be defined by special interest groups. Some generic sub-level keys should be predefined for every key. Like “note”, “description”, “source”, “fixme”. For example: key “ele” may have “ele.source”=”GPS”. “highway”=”cycleway” may have “highway:description”=”Sign says so, but lots of sharp bends and rough edges” (which can be said about 98.5% of Norwegian cycleways). Editor tools should allow entering informal information in addition to every formal key-value pairs, but in a structured way. Database: In the OSM database/API there should be a table on keys: - Key name - Key type/class - Short description in English (authorative) - Optionally a png/svg of the rendering A language translation table on keys: - Key name - Language ID (ISO 639) - Localised description A table of literal values - Key name - Literal value - Short description in English (authorative) - Optionally a png/svg of the

The similarity of his ideas with the way things are currently run (excluding the classes of tags based on what kind of values they accept) with the obvious desire for controlling clients is what made me think this was trollish, but like I said, I'm just going to assume he was unaware of the wiki and the procedures done there to formalize the tags in the database. While this may look reasonable, this is IMHO a bad idea. I've seen once an area where someone made this by sharing parts of landuse=residential (the area) with many roads and forests touching it. I tried to fix it in JOSM (the lines were very rough and there was usable aerial imagery for that area to draw more precise boundary), but the mess was too great and I ultimately gave up (tried to move stuff from relations to create separate polygon but it just ended up as a big mess). if the lines are very rough this is indeed a bad practice because it requires complete rework when you start micro mapping. It's just better than ways with nodes on top of each other or ways with shared nodes on top of each other. no idea if this can be done in Potlatch and in Josm it's tricky to select the way you want if the are all stacked on top. option b) is the best for the described situation. but often areas or boundaries touch and then the relation is the best. Unless current tools improve a lot their multipolygon handling, I think this way sharing in multiple multipolygons should be rather avoided. Josm is pretty good here. select a way and open the relation from the tag window. Even when tons of relations are shown in the relation window you will select the correct one. remove a way from there or select another way in the main window and add it. It's also possible to open multiple relations in parallel. the relation editor improved a lot in the last months and I am pretty happy with the current features. Re: [talk-au] New CC-BY datasets due Monday 28 September on Government 2.0 Taskforce website
2009/10/5 Sam Vekemans acrosscanadatra...@gmail.com: Just one comment. If it was me working on it, i would hesitate on adding in roads where they are 'estimated' because it is not known as a fact. Once all the property boundaries are in there, i think that will cause a natural 'growth' in OSM activity, and people would want to help out ... by going along that way with a GPS, and getting some tracks. so not even listing a highway=road, might be the best way to go. IMO Actually anyone that knows a road exists but hasn't had a chance to map it by other means could use the property boundaries to do so, no GPS needed etc. Also Qld alone makes up 1/4 of the area of Australia, but has relatively few people (4.2 mill according to wikipedia), most live in the very south east of the state around Brisbane. My point is, the majority of back roads, and even streets in tiny little out back towns aren't going to be mapped by GPS, at least not for a decade maybe more. Once a few tracks (even 1 will do) whoever is tracing there own tracks will have a 'guide' to work with already. This way, we will know for sure that roads exist where they do in real-life. Those traces just don't exist and most likely won't exist. It will also give an opportunity for that local area mapper to add in other POI along the way. :-) Yes, there is no street names or POIs on property boundary data :) Another note, is bigtincan hosting a planet-dump and diff/load for your slippy map? Only of south eastern Asia and the south western Pacific, the server would be capable of more, but lacks hdd space. ... and what do you think of my way of conducting the import (just making the .osm files available (hosting them on mediafire.com), and letting local are mappers drop-in the data at their leisure? and organizing it all with a Googledocs chart? (itching for feedback here) You do know there is 2.1million property boundaries right? Is BTC mapper going to add Garmin Maps to that list? Several people already do Garmin maps, I didn't see much point to it. The major reason for getting a tile server up and running was highway shields... P.S. Yup, i knew that the government would open up, it was just a matter of time. :-) ... i guess the rest of the common wealth countries might be next. Only, if the Queen says so. ;) I think part of the reason the data was released is due to a change of federal government, who do some truly good things and then turn round and screw it all up with bone head ideas like filtering people at the ISP level. ___ Talk-au mailing list Talk-au@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-au
Re: [talk-au] unexpected consequence of merging admin boundary and road
2009/10/5 Liz ed...@billiau.net: final note on this the road and the ABS boundary don't agree. nothing personal concerning the edit but a general note that no imported data should be preferred over actual survey data which is already uploaded might add that to the wiki :) The ABS data isn't very accurate, but it would be accurate enough for the purpose it was intended which is breaking the country up into various geographical areas for statistical purposes. The Qld boundary data seems to be more accurate than GPS in most if not all cases, and it has to be in case of legal disputes arising. So it's not exactly clear cut as to if imported data is better or worst, you need to know what the intended purpose of the data is also. ___ Talk-au mailing list Talk-au@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-au

Hi!
