In general I think it is common that a highway has a different name when it
goes through a town. Here the route continues, and will often be signposted
with the route number.
I'm not sure if that is the case for every road in this relation though.

There's gaps in the north-america coastline. Since the lake ontario has
been converted back to coastline the rendering is going to be weeks... if
ever with the gaps.

YahooロコとGoogle Mapsを見てみると「京浜東北線」の名前が
出てくるのは田端から北ですね。
山手線東側の線路がスパゲティ状態だったので駅と合わせて

まあそれ以外にも、通称と、正式名称が違う所は多々あります。
詳しくは、鉄道事典(Wikipediaとも言う)を読むといろいろ書いてあります。
で、東京駅あたりで気がついたのですが、railwayのタグを付けたウェイ、
単線の場合と複線の場合がありますね。これ、どうしたらいいでしょう。
