[talk-ph] Historical OSM

2023-11-01 Thread Jim Morgan

Hi,

I was just curious to look at the OSM map for Manila from 2007 when I started
mapping. Is there a way to display this? Some sort of OSM time-machine?

I looked around but didn't find anything useful, except for someone suggesting
to take a planet dump from that time, and render it in my own mapping server.
Probably possible, but a little more effort than I was hoping for!

Re: [talk-ph] Proposal to move talk-ph to OSM Discourse

2023-07-13 Thread Jim Morgan

I would support any solution that allows me to continue to interact with the
list via email. Any solution that requires me to login to a website and respond
there would lose my engagement pretty quickly.

Its just the way I work: Email is great for asynchronous communication. I can
respond when I feel like it. But as soon as the conversation moves to a
chat-based format then I'm forced to actively keep up with it.

The threading in Discourse is nice, as it lets you focus on discussions you're
interested in, and ignore others.

[talk-ph] AmCham Mapping Event

2022-06-01 Thread Jim Morgan

Just posting this here, in case anyone is interested in attending.

The Philippines' National Mapping and Resource Information Authority or NAMRIA,
is an agency of the Philippine government under the Department of Environment
and Natural Resources responsible for providing the public with mapmaking
services and acting as the central mapping agency, depository, and distribution
facility of natural resources data in the form of maps, charts, texts, and
statistics.

Following this, it is very relevant for information technology in the
Philippines to foster in order to provide a web-native integrated management
information and safety and security planning geo-data, especially in times of
crisis and calamity. Furthermore, it is as important for businesses in the
Philippines to develop an understanding of the Geoportal Philippine Map Apps,
and utilize it to effectively promote the safety of their members and staff.

[talk-ph] Spelfie App

2019-11-20 Thread Jim Morgan

Could be useful for remote mapping?

Spelfie.com allows users to take a selfie at
the exact time that a satellite camera captures their location from
space. Users of the app click on the event they are attending, then,
once they are at the venue, the app provides coordinates so the user
knows precisely where to position themselves and at what time. They then
take a photo of themselves at the moment the satellite is taking its
photo and later the same day the app sends back the satellite image
juxtaposed with the selfie to be viewed in its gallery. Spelfie
spokesman Anthony Burr said that in future the images will be available
within a matter of minutes rather than hours.

I was pleased to see this Linux Distro mentioned, which I was previously
unaware of.

OSGeoLive is a Linux distribution that runs directly from a bootable DVD or USB
thumb drive. You also can load a pre-made virtual machine disk file (vmdk) that
runs in a VMware Workstation or VirtualBox environment. Or you can install it
the old-fashioned way as a dual-boot or sole operating system on a hard drive.

https://www.linuxinsider.com/story/86226.html

It also served as a good roundup of all the available Linux mapping-related
software, some of which I'll now have to investigate.

http://satcam.ssec.wisc.edu

SatCam is a citizen science smartphone app that helps improve the quality
of information derived from satellite data. Users capture observations of
sky and ground conditions when a satellite is overhead. This data is then
submitted to the Space Science and Engineering Center at the University of
Wisconsin - Madison where it is used for quality control. In return for
submitting their observations, users receive a copy of the satellite image
that was taken at their location. SatCam currently works with the Terra,
Aqua, and Suomi NPP satellite networks. Sample submissions can be viewed
through the Browse SatCam Records link at the top of the page. SatCam is
available for iOS can be downloaded via the App Store. [CRH]

Re: [talk-ph] When to use"Saint" or "St." in place names

2017-06-20 Thread Jim Morgan
Just to flag a related issue, the search engine of OSM doesn't seem 'smart' in
that it doesn't know that 'St.' and 'Saint' are equivalent (or 'St.' and
'Street' for that matter!). So when you're searching for Santa Ana, but its in
the database as Sta. Ana, it won't be found. So yes, it is important to
standardize on something. Or make the search engine a bit smarter! Actually the
second option sounds better ... but I don't know how to do that.

I'm not sure if this is what you're after, but I use the OSMAnd application on
my Android phone, and that lets you download the entire Philippines for offline
use in one file.

I also used to use TrekBuddy. That will cache files, tile by tile, so if you go
over the area you want while you're connected to Wifi, and then go somewhere
where there's no data connection, it will use the cached files.

There are probably many more solutions like this.

Thought this was interesting, but probably not very practical. Its basically an

Just noticed that they've finally published all the images they took last year

for a while to discover some "Manila Moments" captured on camera.

Meanwhile, what's the legality of this situation: I remember there's a
restaurant on a certain street in QC. I go to Google Street View and find out.
Is this information OK to put on OSM? Its not tracing maps ... its public
domain info ... I already half know what the restaurant is called ...

So I guess a broader question would be, "What is OK to use from this data?"

Happy (rainy) Sunday all.

Re: [talk-ph] Fwd: MEDAIR : Philipines Imagery

2014-05-08 Thread Jim Morgan

On a related note, I was wondering about the feasibility of starting a
crowd-funded venture to start up a drone operation here, with the object of
putting rural areas of the Philippines on the map. I hadn't really thought
through the details, but perhaps investors over a certain threshold - say USD
1000 for example - could get priority mapping of their chosen area. Certain
towns might need the data, or maybe in areas where there are high
concentrations of hotels and tourists, the tourist industry might club together
to get a decent map of the area. eg. Malapascua Island.

The initial funding would pay for the drone purchase, flights to the targeted
areas and accommodation. After that, it could be spun off as a business.

Just an idle fantasy right now. Anyone have any thoughts about this?

I agree there would need to be a solid internet connection, but the
bandwidth needed isn't that great, so interested parties would only need
to get to a location where they could secure a reasonably reliable
connection. In addition, a whole group of people could be sharing one
client computer, so even if you're limited to 10 participants, that
could be 10 small groups of people around the country.

The services I've used usually have some sort of slideshow presentation
capability, have audio streaming for the presenter's voice, can do
screen-sharing, for demonstrationg applications and techniques, and have
a group chat facility where participants can ask questions. This all
seems to work fine over a 1Mbit connection.

Also, I've noticed that Filipinos generally prefer face-to-face
interaction. I've seen countless times where you ask the audience if
they have any questions and nobody would raise their hands. But after
the lecture is over, a few people would approach the lecturer and then
ask questions. This kind of interaction would be hard to do online.
Point taken about the reticence of audiences here. I've held a few
meetings here myself where its really hard to get input ... which has
been the whole purpose of the meeting! But I think the group chat might
actually encourage this. People actually seem to get braver when they're
not putting their hand up in a roomful of people. Basically as the
presenter is demonstrating something, questions appear in the group
chat, and the presenter can address them when its convenient. It
actually seems to work quite well. There are also options to send
private messages by email which can be addressed in the QA session.

Anyway, just something to consider, and I'm just bouncing the idea around.

The advantage of XML formats as opposed to CSV, is that they specify

Let's assume the Philippines is a rectangle, 300km x 1000km. And lets assume

Re: [talk-ph] SotM 2013 will be in Birmingham, United Kingdom

2013-02-17 Thread Jim Morgan
Whoa, are you sure you guys want to go to Birmingham? ;-)

But kidding aside, if we do actually manage to raise say, a couple of thousand
dollars locally for mapping, wouldn't that money be better spent buying mapping
equipment for use here, rather than sending someone to Birmingham? I'm
thinking, off the top of my head:

 - Some sort of aerial photo rig for mapping provincial areas. Remote control
plane, balloon etc.
 - Buying imagery from imagery suppliers. Perhaps they'd entertain a discount
for non-profits.
 - Buying GIS data from the people hoarding it here.
 - Lobbying government departments to help.
 - More GPStoGo pool units.

And if that sort of approach catches on, then maybe we could use
http://www.kickstarter.com/ to crowdsource the funding. For example.

Just an idea, why not do our own fundraising to send 2-3 Pinoy OSMers

other people to experience it as well.
Raising funds for this may be difficult to pull off, but, will never

[talk-ph] GPS accuracy advances

2013-02-14 Thread Jim Morgan
Ongoing research in Spain

Spanish scientists develop more accurate sat-nav system

Researchers in Spain have developed a system they say can greatly improve the
accuracy of car sat-navs.

It combines a conventional global positioning system (GPS) signal with those of
other sensors - accelerometers and gyroscopes - to pinpoint a car's location to
within 2m (6ft 6in).

It can be cheaply installed in any car and may eventually work on smartphones,
the researchers say.

Such a system has the potential to help the burgeoning driverless car industry.

The system was jointly designed and developed by the Applied Artificial
Intelligence Group and the Systems Intelligence Laboratory - both based at
Carlos III University in Madrid (UC3M).

We have managed to improve the determination of a vehicle's position in
critical cases by between 50 and 90%, said researcher David Martin.

According to the scientists, the margin of error of commercial GPS used in cars
is about 15m in an open field, where the receiver has good visibility from the
satellites.

However, in cities where the signal bounces off buildings and trees, the
calculation of a vehicle's position can be off by more than 50m.

In certain cases, such as in tunnels, communication is lost completely.

At that point, the system reverts to essentially guessing the location. While
this may be sufficient for in-car navigation systems, it would not be suitable
for automated vehicles, which are currently being developed by the likes of
Google.

Cars are becoming increasingly connected, said Prof David Bailey from the
Coventry University Business school.

There is a lot of research into driverless cars and, for that, GPS needs to be
as accurate as possible, he added.

The system developed in Madrid makes use of a unit comprised of three
accelerometers and three gyroscopes, which keep track of the speed and
direction of a vehicle at all times.

The data from these is combined with that from a conventional GPS unit to
pinpoint a location of a car to within 2m in cities.

Using smartphones

The next step for the Spanish researchers is to develop a system that can work
with smartphones.

Most are equipped with a range of sensors, including an accelerometer, a
gyroscope, a magnetometer, GPS and cameras, in addition to wi-fi, Bluetooth and
GSM communications.

We are now starting to work on the integration of this data fusion system into
a mobile telephone, said researcher Enrique Marti.

It can integrate all of the measurements that come from its sensors in order
to obtain the same result that we have now, but at an even much lower cost,
since it is something that almost everyone can carry around in their pocket.

[talk-ph] Public Transport Mapping Intiative

Just found this.

About Public Transport Terminals and Hubs Mapping

The Ateneo School of Government’s Inclusive Mobility Project is taking the

commonly found them in street corners, vacant lots, roadsides and in malls.
However, most of them are unrecorded and unaccounted. This makes the
information regarding the seamless public transport interconnectivity difficult

Hi Marion

I'm no expert either, but generally the OSM wiki is a good place to start:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:amenity%3Dhospital

It gives useful guidelines like Hospital is bigger than Clinic. Clinic is
bigger than Doctor, and it also answers your query about emergency services:
amenity=clinic
name=Cebu Wellness Center
emergency=yes|no

You should be able to get most of the info from there. At the end of the day,
OSM is a consensus of users, so if you feel strongly that other tags should be
used, or don't fit your needs, then you can argue your case on the mailing
lists.

If this proposal comes to anything, I can donate some of my time to setting up

But as the discussion unfolding below concludes, we clearly first need to

Personally I feel it could be a good source for downloading offline tiles with

tweaking the style to make it more local might be a good idea.

What type of help could we provide them? They've asked me about the
extraction from Google Maps but for OSM, they didn't ask me.

Wouldn't there be some copyright issues with extracting from Google Maps?
Whereas you can extract from OSM as long as you give the correct attribution. I
