Re: [OT] Re: [libreoffice-users] HSLQLDB syntax

2013-07-16 Thread Keith Bates
The base of the misunderstanding is the shift in meaning of the word
acronym over the last few decades. It used to mean an abbreviation which
formed a word- such as radar. Now it seems to be used more for an
abbreviation which is more familiar than the original terms. e.g. most
people know the BBC or the Beeb but fewer know it stands for British
Broadcasting Corporation. In my experience bureaucracies spawn all kinds
of meaningless terms which then get abbreviated-- these abbreviations
become known as acronyms because everyone knows what the FHSAP does but
nobody knows what the abbreviation stands for. (I just made that
abbreviation up- there probably is one somewhere in your local, state or
regional bureaucracy).

It's similar with the word electrocution which everyone over 50 knows is
a fatal electric shock. Everyone under 50 seems to use it as an
alternative to electric shock which leads to interesting phrases such as
electrocuted to death and I've been electrocuted three times.

Life would be much simpler if they let the pedants run everything.

I'm missing the part about being pronounced as a word.

May I help? I think I can. It's right there in the second word of
the definition: it says it's a *word*, so it'll be pronounced as, er,
a word!

ah, now I see where that comes from!

deviates from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acronym which counts the
following formations as acronyms:

BBC: British Broadcasting Corporation
OEM: Original Equipment Manufacturer
USA: The United States of America
FGM: Female Genital Mutilation

or maybe it doesn't deviate after all since they can also be
pronounced as words (any string of initials can).

I'm going to let Anne-ology make the call.

[libreoffice-users] Extract Text From PPT

2012-10-11 Thread Keith Bates

Hi,

I don't use Impress, powerpoint etc much at all so if this is a stupid
question, I apologise.

Someone has sent me a long presentation in ppt format which consists
mainly of text. It is somewhat annoying to try to read and absorb the
intent of the text.

Is there a simple way to extract the text from the entire slide show and
save it as a text document- I don't care what format it is as long as it
is on one page instead of 45?

Thank you

Hi Brian,

Your messy workaround was far more straight forward than my messier
work around, which was to export to PDF then use OCR software to get the
text.

I don't know why it didn't occur to me to select the text via the PDF

Here's a rather messy workaround:
o Open the presentation in Impress.
o Go to File | Export as PDF... to create a PDF copy.
o Open the PDF copy in your favourite PDF reader and save as text from
there.

I trust this helps.

Just copy the text from Impress to Writer ;)

Here's how:

1. Open the .ppt with Impress
2. Select Impress Outline mode (Outline thumbnail or View / Outline menu)
3. Ctrl+A
4. Ctrl+C
5. Open an empty Writer document
6. Ctrl+V

Et voila!

If you don't want to get the formatting into the Writer doc, at step
6, press Ctrl+Shift+V instead of Ctrl+V.

[libreoffice-users] PDF Importer Problems

2012-11-15 Thread Keith Bates

I am using Ubuntu 12.10 and LO 3.6.2.2

Every month or so our church has a music practice which basically
involves me reproducing sheet music and word sheets, then adding a
photocopying licence number to each piece of music.

Typically I might scan 16 to 20 pages in a session. I am using the
program Simple Scan to do this.

In the past it was straight forward to scan the music to a pdf document
then use LO pdf importer to add the required text. The last few times I
have tried to do this the document just opens as a series of blank
pages. I know the pdf is OK because other pdf viewers show it.

I did use pdfEdit to fill the gap but this can no longer be used in
Ubnuntu 12.10

Does anyone know how to resolve this? I could go back to using stickers
with the required text, but using LO to add the text prior to printing
is much simpler when it works.

[libreoffice-users] Fwd: Printing Labels From Google Address Book

2012-12-19 Thread Keith Bates

Hello,

Having just finished my annual Christmas card mail out and mastering the
arcane wizardry of producing labels from a database, I realised that my
address list is greatly out of date.

It occurred to me that rather than trying to maintain a separate
database which I use exactly once a year, it would be more useful to
import addresses from my Google contact list.

Is there any simple way of importing a selection of Google contacts into
Libre Office?

Thanks

Go Insert- Section. In the dialog box there is a tab for Columns.

If you want to revert to one column start another section.

[libreoffice-users] Calculations in Report Builder

2013-12-03 Thread Keith Bates

I am going crazy over a calculation I am trying to do in Report Builder.

I have a database that records weather details each day. I want to

The function RecordCounter counts records correctly. The function
AccumulationLOWreport sums the daily minimum temperatures. This seems to
work correctly in that I can put this in the footer and get the sum of
temperatures.

To work out the average, I put a field in the footer. In the Data tab
I choose Field or Formula and enter
[AccumulationLOWReport]/[RecordCounter] . When I run the report it
returns 0.

I have tried all of the following, with the same result
' [AccumulationLOWReport]/[RecordCounter]'
' [AccumulationLOWReport]'/'[RecordCounter]'
= [AccumulationLOWReport]/[RecordCounter]

Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong?

shows [AccumulationLOWReport]/[RecordCounter] (without the quotes, of

running the report so that it updates the field, otherwise it still
runs with the old formula), ran the report, and got an average of

[libreoffice-users] Counting Instances

2013-12-29 Thread Keith Bates

Hi everyone,

I've used Libre Office for years, but I am an absolute newbie as far as
Calc is concerned for anything but the very basics. :)

Here is my problem.

My church has to report to the copyright licence holders the names of
the songs it uses and the number of times each song is used in a given
time period.

The software we use for projecting the words for songs (OpenLP) will
produce the name of each song used in each service. It will generate a CSV

Obviously it is easy enough to import that into a spreadsheet.

How can I then count the number of times each song is used? I could sort
the table by song title and then count them manually, but I am guessing
there would be some sort of function that automates the counting.

Thanks for any help on this.

Obviously it is easy enough to import that into a spreadsheet.

How can I then count the number of times each song is used? I could
sort the table by song title and then count them manually, but I am
guessing there would be some sort of function that automates the
counting.

Thanks for any help on this.

Kieth

I would try the COUNTIF(). The syntax is =COUNTIF(range, criteria).
The range is the column with the titles and the criteria is the title
you want counted. I would set up the data one sheet and in another I
would set a column with each title and in the next column have
=COUNTIF(datasheet.range, cell). The only problem is if you
accidentally missed of the titles in the range. Assuming an average
of 3 services per week that use 5 songs you have about 780 separate
instances that a song was used. I can see easily missing a single title.

An alternative is to use Base with the data uploaded to a table. CSV
files work very well with databases. Then the have Base count each
title. Most people find databases more intimidating because they do
not directly work them. But once you get familiar with them you might
find this an easier approach for problems like this.

I tend to use raw SQL when working with Base (mostly because I use
SQL at work). In SQL the query would look like this:

SELECT Count(*) AS Count AS count is optional
FROM Songs use actual table name
GROUP BY Title use actual column name which has the titles

If you want you can send me a typical dataset to off list and I will
look at both with Calc and Base.

Jay

I'm wondering if you are expected to pay royalties on the music. If
so, I would think that there is
enough sacred music in the public domain that you could forget about
the problem, and save
money for the church to use for religious purposes. You should have
your music director look into that.

--doug

The licence is through CCLI (www.ccli.com) and is a flat fee based on
the size of the congregation. The total fees are divided amongst the
song authors based on total song usage.

For contemporary music it is a very cost effective way of legally
reproducing lyrics and music.

[SOLVED] [libreoffice-users] Counting Instances

2013-12-29 Thread Keith Bates

Hi Keith,

Keith Bates schrieb:

Hi everyone,

I've used Libre Office for years, but I am an absolute newbie as far as
Calc is concerned for anything but the very basics. :)

Here is my problem.

My church has to report to the copyright licence holders the names of
the songs it uses and the number of times each song is used in a given
time period.

The software we use for projecting the words for songs (OpenLP) will
produce the name of each song used in each service. It will generate
a CSV

Obviously it is easy enough to import that into a spreadsheet.

How can I then count the number of times each song is used? I could sort
the table by song title and then count them manually, but I am guessing

Import the csv data into the spreadsheet.
Define a data range for this data including the field names.
Generate a pivot table from it this way:
- drag the field name of the song title to the Row Fields
- drag the same field name to the Data Fields.
- Double click the field name button in the Data Fields area and
change the function from sum to count.

OK

Using a pivot table has the advantage, that you do not need to know
beforehand, which song titles are contained in the list.

Kind regards
Regina

Thank you to everyone who offered help with this.

I found the pivot table option to be the best one- thanks Regina for
your detailed instructions.

Before today, I had no idea what a pivot table is- now apparently I can
use one :)

I might read the user guide now to deepen my understanding.

Paul suggested using Subtotals on the column with the song title, but I
found this sorted just that column which separated the song titles from
other fields. I guess I could have selected the other fields as part of
the sorting/sub-totalling, but the pivot table has the advantage of
giving the information without messing with the data.

[libreoffice-users] Importing HTML in LO 4.2

2014-02-04 Thread Keith Bates

Has anyone experienced this new problem (or is it a feature?) in 4.2?

In previous versions of LO, opening an html file would give you the file
as would be seen on a web browser.

In 4.2 it is the actual html code that is displayed. This behaviour
happens when opening any html document or inserting an html file into an
open LO document.

Does anyone know of a way around this?

I use moneydance to track finances, and it allows reports to be saved in
html. Producing printed reports used to be a matter of simply opening
the Income and Expenses report in LO, inserting the Account Balances at
the end of the report, then edit titles, styles etc at will.

I have discovered that I can open the html files in Firefox, then copy
and paste into LO, but that does seem unnecessarily complicated, when it
used to just work in a single step.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Importing HTML in LO 4.2

2014-02-04 Thread Keith Bates

Hi,

No, I made sure that the HTML source item was not selected. I've tried
a few different files generated by different sources. Generally they
behave as I described, although I did find one that opened correctly. I
have no idea what the difference is between those that work and those
that don't.

Opening them from a blank html document makes no difference. In fact the
title bar just says LO Writer not Writer/Web.

If I start with a blank html document and use Insert-File it shows up as
the source.

I'm using the linux version of LO. Are you using Windows or Linux?

tablets.

Another service is Google Drive (drive.google.com)

There are also many others.

Searched in Google using as many different search terms and

1. Go to Forms- Wizards- Install Dictionaries. Helpful screenshots in
Windows-- but the wizard does not exist in the Ubuntu version of LO

2. A LO extensions page- it covers a range of different extensions but
not too many dictionaries, although I do note that Afrikaans ands

I am so desperate now for any spell checker that I would even settle

Managed to find an old Au Dictionary extension on my hard drive that

Re: [libreoffice-users] Printing Multiple Copies Duplex

2011-11-29 Thread Keith Bates

Bruce,

That's exactly the problem, and I've used the same work around.

Mine is a bit more complicated than that as I edit the sheet each week,
having a collection of songs saved that I cut and paste. So this week's
songs are on page 1 of an 11 page document. That means I now have to
remember to copy page 1 to page 2, deleting last week's page 1 or 2.

Previous versions of LO would let you send 2 copies of 1 page and print
duplex. I can't make this work in 3.4.4

duplex. And selecting combine print jobs made no difference

It works but I'd also like to know if there is a better way because every
time I make a modification I have to do it to both pages.

It would be much better to be able to send 2 copies of one page to the
printer and get it to print duplex that is one copy on each side of the
paper.

Subject: [libreoffice-users] Printing Multiple Copies Duplex

Hi list members.

I'm having trouble doing something that used to be easy and automatic.

I need to print multiple song sheets. They are in two columns printed
landscape. Each song sheet fits onto one A4 page. I print the copies back to
back then cut pages in half, giving me two sheets of A5 each containing
identical content.

In previous versions of LO this was straight forward. Set the number of
copies, set to print duplex.

In 3.4.4 I am finding that it sends each page out as a separate print job
even when I select the option to combine into a single job (under the
Options tab in the print dialog- it used to be under
Tools-Options-General-Print, I think). It happily prints a second blank
page on the back of the first so I get exactly what I don't want.

I also make sure that the option for printing extra blank pages is not
selected.

I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 if that helps.

There may be a workaround for that. Insert a section consisting of
your first page. On your second page, insert another section; on the
Section tab of the Insert Section dialogue, tick Link and select the
name of your first-page section from the drop-down list for Section.
Now any change to your first page will appear also in the copy on your
second page: you need make each change only once. You may need to use
Tools | Update | Links to force an update.

That's not to say it wouldn't be better if you didn't have to do this ...

I trust this helps.

Brian Barker

Thanks for that suggestion, Brian. It's well worth trying. I've used

until prompted by someone else!

I'll give it a go tomorrow.

[libreoffice-users] LO 3.5 Templates

2012-02-28 Thread Keith Bates

I made a big mistake this morning.

I upgraded to 3.5- I'm using Ubuntu 11.10. Installed from the

I discovered early that it won't print multiple copies.

I tried to revert to 3.4 by removing 3.4 and re-installing. It wouldn't
start up.

Now I find that I can't use templates. There is not even a templates
folder in the organize templates module.

The templates exist but just can't be used.

If I try to use a template I get an error message templates already
exists. If I try to open them as documents and save them as templates I
get another similar error about them already existing- no option to
overwrite.

Has anyone come across any of this insanity?

If that hasn't worked try fully uninstalling LibreOffice again, reboot (especially if using Windows) and then re-install the 3.4.5. Again you will need to copy the templates and stuff back from the copy you made into the new one that got generated in the previous paragraph.

I don't know what the problem was with 3.5. I guess I'll just have to

[libreoffice-users] Templates Disappeared

For some reason, my templates are no longer accessible. The files are

all unchanged since the previous version of 3.4. When I try to access

The problem arises from a change in where the templates are
located: LO 3.5 stores them in a different location
(.config/libreoffice/3/user/template) than 3.4
(.libreoffice/3/user/template).
Suggestion: use the organise templates feature again. If you use
My Templates as the folders for your templates, highlight it. The click
the Command button and select Update. Perhaps this will cause your
templates to appear.
If this does not work, copy your templates contained
in .libreoffice/3/user/template to .config/libreoffice/3/user/template.
Then organise your templates, highlight the My Template folder, click
the Command button, and select Update from the drop down menu. The
templates should appear.
I used this process to add multiple templates to My Templates, and
it saves time compared to importing one template at a time.

For some reason, my templates are no longer accessible. The files are
present in a folder that is referenced in the Tools-Options-Paths -
all unchanged since the previous version of 3.4. When I try to access
the templates through the organise templates feature, there are no
templates. I also get an error message templates already exists-
presumably a reference to the folder templates rather than really bad
English. This error message also comes up when I open an existing
document.

When I try to start a new document using a template I get this message:

Error creating a new document; templates already exists.

I've checked paths and permissions and I can't see what is wrong.

I tried what Dan suggested but it doesn't work :(

I don't even have a My Templates folder in the template organiser
wizard thing. I know it was there in 3.4 but it's no longer there.

I copied the template files to .config/libreoffice/3/user/template then
clicked the Commands button and Update but then got several templates
already exists messages and one Update could not be completed error.

I've removed all folders from the templates path except the default
(/usr/lib/ something) and then added.config/libreoffice/3/user/template
and set it as the default for adding new templates.

I'm wondering if there is a glitch in the Ubuntu update.

address for the 3.5.x branch is something like

/home/username/.config/libreoffice/3/user/template

Note that inside
/home/username/.config
you will see a lot of folders. Each program has a folder in there for it's own settings and configurations. Some are still in /home/username but are moving to the newer place to reduce congestion and confusion.

Note that username should be replaced by your own user-name, the one you login with. Don't change the 3/user part tho!

OK, try this:
Open the new office version.
FileOpen...
Get the old templates folder .libreoffice/3/user/template/ select all
the templates you are interested in and load them.

Now for each file:
FileTemplatesSave... and enter the template name.

FileNewTemplate [Ctrl+Shift+N] should list the imported templates now.

I deleted all the existing templates in
.config/.libreoffice/3/user/template. Then I opened a template and tried
to save as a template and got this error:

Error writing document Untitled2 as template: templates already exists

Click OK and it opens the box to enter a name and save the template.I
enter a name and click save and it comes back with the same message.

I click OK and then get this message:
Error writing document Untitled2 as template: General error General
input/output error

Reset your entire user profile and try again. Close the office, delete

Do not copy any files into the profile. Templates need to be

[libreoffice-users] BASIC Runtime Error. Object Variable not set

2011-01-28 Thread Keith Bates

Hi,

I just installed libre office 3.3 on my computer running Ubuntu 10.10.

I have a macro written in openoffice and running perfectly for many
years. It now returns the above error.

The macro is activated by a button on a form that adds a record to a
database. Basically it reads the last record and enters some of the
fields into the form for the new record.

Can you tell me how to fix this please?

Thank you.

After entering yesterday's data directly into the table, today the form
works.

Well LO just stuffed up a form that I use daily. All the boxes, labels
etc are just dumped on top of each other. All the program settings have
reverted to the defaults from the first time use-- things like macro
security, background to application and other things selected under

There is no apparent reason for this.

I need to use this form and since LO will not let me do this, I guess
that I'll be reverting to Open Office. I'll give LO another go when
there is a major new release.

There is no apparent reason for this.

Did you play with the zoom settings in any other document, in
particular, a Writer document ? This is a known (old and recurring) bug
from OpenOffice.org and I wouldn't be surprised if it also affected
LibO. It gets fixed, then it gets broken again, along the various
version releases, and yes, it is really frustrating when you rely on
forms for data entry. Many a time I had to try and explain to users what
was happening.

Additionally, I know of a bug that causes this to happen in
OpenOffice.org when the form is stored on a network resource, such as a
NFS or SMB file store. I haven't yet experimented to see whether this
also happens in LibO, but I wouldn't be overly surprised.

Alex

No, Alex as far as I know I haven't zoomed in on anything. But I've
never had this happen in OO.

I think it's related to the other issues with Forms in Base that seem to
have erupted in LO. I'm surprised that it also lost all of my previous
settings.

So for now I've uninstalled LO and reinstalled OO which actually
remembered all my settings and opened the form correctly.

What makes the issues with Base 3.3 worse is that there is no

above bug report. NONE of these issues occurred in OO 3.2. This
unfortunately reflects really badly on the Open Source community
altogether, surely cannot the coding for Base be regressed to how it was
in 3.2, until the changes that were attempted in 3.3 can be more
thoroughly tested.

Well I am staying with OOo 3.2.1 until things get better (if they ever
do). Working with Base as it evolves (and I use that word lightly) is
like running a marathon and hitting the wall at every version change...

Alex

I've given LO a couple of goes over the last few weeks and I just find
the Base component is unusable.

Forms that worked flawlessly on OO for several years suddenly don't
work. One thing that I noticed is that for some reason LO resets to the
original defaults randomly between uses-- fonts, macro security,
background colours etc.

The problem with this is the frustration of having to go back to the
Options menu and put things back to the way that works for me, and
then having to re-register databases.

I've switched between LO and OO about 4 times hoping that I could get LO
to work consistently, but it doesn't.

Unfortunately I've had to revert to Open Office for now.

Brian,

Thanks for your suggestion. I went with the Reg. Exp method but still unable to
find the rogue transaction that throws the error.

I could say that Turth is a kind of post-modern rejection of truth, but that
would
be suggesting that Jesus is not quite the truth. :)

[libreoffice-users] Importing financial report into Write

2014-06-02 Thread Keith Bates

I want to print a financial report worth data from my accounting program.

The program produces a couple of formats for exporting the data- a text
file, a html format that Libreoffice won't display correctly and a csv.

Here is a part of a report

Net Worth
As of: 30/05/2014

AccountAmount
JournalA$ 1,250.00
New Life MinistriesA$ 793.09
Orphanage AccountA$ 796.20

To get the kind of formatting I need, I could just import the text file
and make each line expand to fill the width of the page. I can't see any
way to do this- full justification doesn't apply to the last line in a
paragraph- which is every line.

Alternatively I could import it into a table, but it all gets put into a
single cell.

I imported it into a spreadsheet then copied it from there into Write.
That worked out, but it is a bit clumsy.

Is there a way to directly import the data in a way that produces easily
readable data without an intermediate step?

printing a financial report already but the output of the account
program doesn't meet your needs. Is this correct?

Then you describe various output formats the accounting program
provides and that none of the formatting meets your need. My questions
here are:
- how do you want the formatted reports to look? e.g. the data
centered on the page

- what appears on the page before and after the data?
- what program are you expecting to use to make the formatted report?

Thank you

Hi Alan,

Amongst other things, I need the Account Balances and Profit and Loss
statements in the same document. But I also need to produce a clearly
readable document so that amounts line up etc. Other reasons I want to
edit the document include to add a logo plus comments.

The financial software produces information that looks like this:

Item1 $32.00
Item 2 $3257091.23

Whereas I want it to look like this:

Item1 $32.00
Item 2 $3257091.23

A table would be ideal as you can add borders etc, but that's not essential.

I used to export the data as html which used to import directly into LO,
but now LO just shows all the html code rather than the formatted
document. So then I used to open the html file in a web browser and copy
and paste the page into LO. But the latest version of the financial
program (moneydance) has changed what it puts into the html so that
even passing it through a web browser just results in a list similar to
that above.

Hope that clarifies my aim.

I've had a couple of replies off list, and with more playing around I
discovered I can open the html in a browser, copy it there and use Paste
Special- html code to import it into LO Writer. If there is a better way

Open the CSV file in LibreOffice Calc. Copy the relevant cells. Paste
into a text (Writer) document, but using Edit | Paste Special... (or
right-click | Paste Special... or Ctrl+Shift+V) instead of ordinary
Paste. In the Paste Special dialogue, select HTML (HyperText Markup

You can do that (but it's probably not your best solution):
o Go to Format | Paragraph... | Alignment (or right-click |
Paragraph... | Alignment).

o Under Options, select Justified.
o For Last line, select Justified.
Better still, you can set this in paragraph style.

I imported it into a spreadsheet then copied it from there into

I suspect that's the easiest you'll get ...

Combining information from multiple sources can very likely be done

2^53 is one followed by fifty-three zeroes, of course - so is just

I wasn't clear - but not in the way you thought! I meant that 2^53 is
represented *in binary* (as it will be in the computer) as one
followed by fifty-three zeroes, of course. So it's the value that is
just too large to be stored accurately in double precision. (As so
often happens, I spotted that omission just after I had sent the

I did not have this running Ubuntu 15.10.

I also wonder which version of LibreOffice Ubuntu 16.04 includes. I
have found that, in the past, no matter which LO version I have
installed the upgrading of Ubuntu removes my install and installs the
one they have in their repository. This did not happen this time,
since my spare laptop had LO 5.0.x and still has it. The laptop I am
typing from now has 5.1.2.2, which I installed before I upgraded to
Ubuntu 16.04.

So which version is included with the newest version of Ubuntu?

Since 16.04LTS will be supported through 2021, according to a e-news
report, will there be any "push" by LO/TDF to keep Ubuntu's repository
updated to the current LO versions from now till 2021 when this long
term supported Ubuntu OS will no longer be supported by Ubuntu's
creators.

[libreoffice-users] Embedding Video Files

2017-06-08 Thread Keith Bates
Earlier this week, I produced a presentation with embedded video for use
in a school classroom (NSW Department of Education, in case anyone has
personal knowledge of their set-up). I am using Libre Office 5.3 and
Ubuntu 17.04.

I checked that the presentation worked, including the video. I saved it
in .ppt format onto a USB stick with the video file, "just in case".
This turned out to be a good thing.

The classroom has an old version of MS Office (2010, I think I saw), a
projector and a smart board. I don't know what version of Windows they
are running.

When I ran the presentation, everything went as expected. Touching the
white board progressed the slides as expected. However I couldn't get
the video to work from within the presentation, and had to run it from
the media player.

It's not a big problem, and I can work around it, but when you have a
classroom of Year 4 and 5 kids, you don't want to get too distracted by
the technology.

Any ideas about how to make it work? Keep in mind that I have no access
to their computer outside of my lesson time.

Thanks.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Reports Libre Base

2017-11-27 Thread Keith Bates
I use Ubuntu 17.04 also, including the Libreoffice packages installed
directly from Ubuntu. The default install excludes Base, and if you
can't open a database, it seems like you don't have Base installed. sudo
apt install libreoffice-base should fix that,

For reports the packages you need are libreoffice-report-builder and
libreoffice-report-builder-bin. Use sudo apt install
libreoffice-report-builder* and they should install.

I recently upgraded from Ubuntu 18.04 to 18.10 and I discovered that the

When I try to execute the report I get the following error messages

SQL Status: S1000   An error occurred while creating the report.

Can not activate the factory for

You are using the LO-version from Ubuntu, not directly from LO. So it
could be LO is missing some packages.

But: ReportBuilder of LO 6.1.2.1 has indeed bugs. The most important bug
here is: Label-fields don't show the right label, only the text "Label".
It has been fixed for LO 6.1.3.2

[libreoffice-users] Changing Background in Impress

2018-11-27 Thread Keith Bates

Hi

I recently upgraded to LO 6.1.2.1 and Ubuntu 18.10 and have a problem.

When designing impress screens, I cannot change the background colour.
Everything remains stubbornly white.

I right click on the page, select "Properties" then Background, Colour.
But instead of filling the screen it leaves it white. Selecting other
options on that dialog, such as Bitmap or Hatch still results in plain
white.

How can I change this?

Thanks

Search for: <[^>]*>
Replace with: (nothing)

Explanation:
[^>] matches any character except ">".
[^>]* matches zero or more of such characters.
<[^>]*> matches "<", any text not including ">", and ">", i.e.
everything from "<" up to and including the first ">" thereafter.

I trust this helps.

[libreoffice-users] Libreoffice corrupted by Ubuntu failed upgrade

2019-04-21 Thread Keith Bates

Hi all

So I thought I would upgrade from Ubuntu to 18.10 to 19.04. The normally
easy, no dramas upgrade was far from ideal.

After several hours of fiddling, my tech expert son found some obscure
gnome settings got wrecked, and once we trawled through various log
files and found the  offending files, all was well.

Except Libre Office.

Everything important seems to work unless you try to use templates-
either through the opening screen or through File- Manage Templates. At
that point the program freezes. Eventually a message window opens to say
that "Libre Office 6.2 Writer is not responding" with options to Force
Quit or Wait.

I have tried the usual things:

 * remove configuration files
 * re-install
 * downloaded the DEBs from the Libre Office web site and tried to
   install over the existing installation.

So far nothing has resolved the issue.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thank you

[SOLVED] [libreoffice-users] Libreoffice corrupted by Ubuntu failed upgrade

2019-04-21 Thread Keith Bates

You wouldn't believe how simple this was to fix!

I considered doing the complete removal then re-installation but what
put me off that was it wanted to remove gnome for some reason. Even
removing just some of the components dragged gnome with it, and I am not
keen on using linux without a desktop environment.

I had a spare log-in profile  already, and LO works in that profile. The
thought of using one log-in to access software installed on a different
log-in just seems too prone to messing up, but at least I knew there was
an option there.

In the end, I thought about it and realised that it is only templates
that are the issue here, so let's examine the templates issue.

I looked at the Path options in Tools-Options-Libre Office- Paths. It
appears that for some reason LO had added my home directory as a path
for templates, as well as the default path. I deleted the home
directory, recreated the template folder in my config folder then copied
my templates back in and now it's all working.

Thank you for all the suggestions

Keith

[libreoffice-users] Changing the case of first letter of every paragraph

2020-03-05 Thread Keith Bates
I have been using the voice typing feature in Google Chrome to write
some documents, then download them in .odt format for editing.

I find that it consistently starts a new paragraph with a lower case
first letter. So I need to find the first letter of every paragraph in
the document and convert it to upper case.

I thought of using Find and Replace with Regular Expressions, which is
easy. ^[:lower:] finds every lower case letter which is the first letter
of a paragraph. But when I enter [:upper:] in the replace box it simply
pastes the text [:upper:] . I have both the "match case" and "regular
expressions" boxes ticked.

Is there a way to do this other than going through the document ad
replacing manually?

Thank you

it simply pastes the text [:upper:] . I have both the "match case"
and "regular expressions" boxes ticked.

Is there a way to do this other than going through the document ad
replacing manually?

To answer my own question:

1. Use the Find and Replace box and Reg. Exp.. Click on "Find All".
2. Close "Find and Replace" dialog.
3. Right click on one of the highlighted letters. Format- Text- Upper
case

Keith, I like your solution (and Brian's, which is as elegant as the
way he presented it), but am confused about step 3: do you /really/
right-click (for context menu)? From step 1, you already have the
first letter of each paragraph in focus; don't you just go from there
to the main menu ? [The order of steps 2 and 3
has no effect - or, to put it another way, step 2 is not essential to
your solution.]

[libreoffice-users] Connecting Document to Database

2022-05-29 Thread Keith Bates

I have just done a fresh install of Ubuntu.

I saved most of my stuff in the process, so that's a win.

I am having a problem with a form for a database that I constructed
without the help of the form wizard, many years ago. I know that I have
to link or connect the form to the database but I can't find out how to
do it.

Can someone please refresh my memory?

Thank you

Keith

It is a standalone form, isn't it?
Database is an internal database (only a file *.odb)?

Have a look for the Base file (*.odb).
Go to Tools → Options → LibreOffice Base → Databases and register the
database.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Printing Issue

2023-06-13 Thread Keith Bates

Thanks Howard, but that wasn't the issue.

I fixed the problem about 20 minutes after I sent the email, like I
usually do 

I turned the printer off and back on. Problem solved.

I just need to remember that next time, before I try every other fix
imaginable 

This might help...

To Suppress the Printout of Empty Pages

If two even or two odd pages directly follow each other in your
document, Writer will insert an empty page by default. You can
suppress those automatically generated empty pages from printing and
from exporting to PDF.

Choose Tools - Options - LibreOffice Writer - Print.

Remove the tick mark from Print automatically inserted blank pages.

This is a bit weird.

I have been using Libreoffice (7.5.3.2), Ubuntu (23.04) and an HP

It all played together nicely, until today.

I don't know what is different, but now it spits out a blank page when
printing from LO.

Other applications print fine. If I export my document from LO to a pdf,
it will print fine from any pdf viewer.

I have tried using different ppd files, but same result each time.

Any suggestions?

Any ideas?
