Re: [OT] Re: [libreoffice-users] HSLQLDB syntax
The base of the misunderstanding is the shift in meaning of the word acronym over the last few decades. It used to mean an abbreviation which formed a word- such as radar. Now it seems to be used more for an abbreviation which is more familiar than the original terms. e.g. most people know the BBC or the Beeb but fewer know it stands for British Broadcasting Corporation. In my experience bureaucracies spawn all kinds of meaningless terms which then get abbreviated-- these abbreviations become known as acronyms because everyone knows what the FHSAP does but nobody knows what the abbreviation stands for. (I just made that abbreviation up- there probably is one somewhere in your local, state or regional bureaucracy). It's similar with the word electrocution which everyone over 50 knows is a fatal electric shock. Everyone under 50 seems to use it as an alternative to electric shock which leads to interesting phrases such as electrocuted to death and I've been electrocuted three times. Life would be much simpler if they let the pedants run everything. [libreoffice-users] PDF Importer Problems
I am using Ubuntu 12.10 and LO 3.6.2.2 Every month or so our church has a music practice which basically involves me reproducing sheet music and word sheets, then adding a photocopying licence number to each piece of music. Typically I might scan 16 to 20 pages in a session. I am using the program Simple Scan to do this. In the past it was straight forward to scan the music to a pdf document then use LO pdf importer to add the required text. The last few times I have tried to do this the document just opens as a series of blank pages. I know the pdf is OK because other pdf viewers show it. I did use pdfEdit to fill the gap but this can no longer be used in Ubnuntu 12.10 Does anyone know how to resolve this? [libreoffice-users] Counting Instances
Hi everyone, I've used Libre Office for years, but I am an absolute newbie as far as Calc is concerned for anything but the very basics. :) Here is my problem. My church has to report to the copyright licence holders the names of the songs it uses and the number of times each song is used in a given time period. The software we use for projecting the words for songs (OpenLP) will produce the name of each song used in each service. It will generate a CSV Obviously it is easy enough to import that into a spreadsheet. How can I then count the number of times each song is used? I could sort the table by song title and then count them manually, but I am guessing there would be some sort of function that automates the counting. Kieth I would try the COUNTIF(). The syntax is =COUNTIF(range, criteria). The range is the column with the titles and the criteria is the title you want counted. I would set up the data one sheet and in another I would set a column with each title and in the next column have =COUNTIF(datasheet.range, cell). The only problem is if you accidentally missed of the titles in the range. Assuming an average of 3 services per week that use 5 songs you have about 780 separate instances that a song was used. I can see easily missing a single title. An alternative is to use Base with the data uploaded to a table. CSV files work very well with databases. Then the have Base count each title. Most people find databases more intimidating because they do not directly work them. But once you get familiar with them you might find this an easier approach for problems like this. I tend to use raw SQL when working with Base (mostly because I use SQL at work). In SQL the query would look like this: SELECT Count(*) AS Count AS count is optional FROM Songs use actual table name GROUP BY Title use actual column name which has the titles If you want you can send me a typical dataset to off list and I will look at both with Calc and Base. Jay I'm wondering if you are expected to pay royalties on the music. If so, I would think that there is enough sacred music in the public domain that you could forget about the problem, and save money for the church to use for religious purposes. You should have your music director look into that. --doug The licence is through CCLI (www.ccli.com) and is a flat fee based on the size of the congregation. The total fees are divided amongst the song authors based on total song usage. Generate a pivot table from it this way: - drag the field name of the song title to the Row Fields - drag the same field name to the Data Fields. - Double click the field name button in the Data Fields area and change the function from sum to count. OK Using a pivot table has the advantage, that you do not need to know beforehand, which song titles are contained in the list. Kind regards Regina Thank you to everyone who offered help with this. I found the pivot table option to be the best one- thanks Regina for your detailed instructions. Before today, I had no idea what a pivot table is- now apparently I can use one :) I might read the user guide now to deepen my understanding. Paul suggested using Subtotals on the column with the song title, but I found this sorted just that column which separated the song titles from other fields. I guess I could have selected the other fields as part of the sorting/sub-totalling, but the pivot table has the advantage of giving the information without messing with the data. -- God bless you Keith Bates 4 Mooloobar St Narrabri NSW Ph 02 67924890 Jesus is the Way the Truth and the Life -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: users+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

I use moneydance to track finances, and it allows reports to be saved in html. Producing printed reports used to be a matter of simply opening the Income and Expenses report in LO, inserting the Account Balances at the end of the report, then edit titles, styles etc at will. I have discovered that I can open the html files in Firefox, then copy and paste into LO, but that does seem unnecessarily complicated, when it used to just work in a single step.
Re: [libreoffice-users] Importing HTML in LO 4.2
Hi, No, I made sure that the HTML source item was not selected. I've tried a few different files generated by different sources. Generally they behave as I described, although I did find one that opened correctly. I have no idea what the difference is between those that work and those that don't. Opening them from a blank html document makes no difference. In fact the title bar just says LO Writer not Writer/Web. If I start with a blank html document and use Insert-File it shows up as the source. I'm using the linux version of LO. Are you using Windows or Linux? An anti-English troll- that's a new one for this list. :) I can't say that I've studied every language in the world, but I did study French, New Testament Greek and Ancient Hebrew. Guess what? Re: [libreoffice-users] Printing Multiple Copies Duplex
Bruce, That's exactly the problem, and I've used the same work around. Mine is a bit more complicated than that as I edit the sheet each week, having a collection of songs saved that I cut and paste. So this week's songs are on page 1 of an 11 page document. That means I now have to remember to copy page 1 to page 2, deleting last week's page 1 or 2. Previous versions of LO would let you send 2 copies of 1 page and print duplex. I can't make this work in 3.4.4 Keith On 30/11/11 16:09, Bruce Carlson wrote: Hi, I had the same problem recently. Or at least I think so. Correct me if I've misunderstood your problem. Only way I got around it was to create a second page on my document which was an exact copy of the first page and then select print 2 copies and print duplex. And selecting combine print jobs made no difference It works but I'd also like to know if there is a better way because every time I make a modification I have to do it to both pages. It would be much better to be able to send 2 copies of one page to the printer and get it to print duplex that is one copy on each side of the paper. I'm having trouble doing something that used to be easy and automatic. I need to print multiple song sheets. They are in two columns printed landscape. Each song sheet fits onto one A4 page. I print the copies back to back then cut pages in half, giving me two sheets of A5 each containing identical content. In previous versions of LO this was straight forward. Set the number of copies, set to print duplex. In 3.4.4 I am finding that it sends each page out as a separate print job even when I select the option to combine into a single job (under the Options tab in the print dialog- it used to be under Tools-Options-General-Print, I think). It happily prints a second blank page on the back of the first so I get exactly what I don't want. I also make sure that the option for printing extra blank pages is not selected. I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 if that helps. -- God bless you Keith Bates Narrabri NSW Jesus is the Way the Truth and the Life -- For unsubscribe instructions e-mail to: users+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted -- God bless you Keith Bates Narrabri NSW Jesus is the Way the Truth and the Life -- For unsubscribe instructions e-mail to: users+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

There may be a workaround for that. Insert a section consisting of your first page. On your second page, insert another section; on the Section tab of the Insert Section dialogue, tick Link and select the name of your first-page section from the drop-down list for Section. Now any change to your first page will appear also in the copy on your second page: you need make each change only once. You may need to use Tools | Update | Links to force an update. That's not to say it wouldn't be better if you didn't have to do this ... I trust this helps. Brian Barker Thanks for that suggestion, Brian. It's well worth trying. I've used sections in this way before, but it's not something that I think of until prompted by someone else! [libreoffice-users] LO 3.5 Templates
I made a big mistake this morning. I upgraded to 3.5- I'm using Ubuntu 11.10. Installed from the libreoffice ppa I discovered early that it won't print multiple copies. I tried to revert to 3.4 by removing 3.4 and re-installing. It wouldn't start up. Now I find that I can't use templates. There is not even a templates folder in the organize templates module. The templates exist but just can't be used. If I try to use a template I get an error message templates already exists. If I try to open them as documents and save them as templates I get another similar error about them already existing- no option to overwrite. Has anyone come across any of this insanity? -- God bless you Keith Bates Narrabri NSW Jesus is the Way the Truth and the Life -- For unsubscribe instructions e-mail to: users+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

With the new release of Ubuntu last week I received a new release of LO 3.5.2.2 For some reason, my templates are no longer accessible. The files are present in a folder that is referenced in the Tools-Options-Paths - all unchanged since the previous version of 3.4. Did you play with the zoom settings in any other document, in particular, a Writer document ? This is a known (old and recurring) bug from OpenOffice.org and I wouldn't be surprised if it also affected LibO. It gets fixed, then it gets broken again, along the various version releases, and yes, it is really frustrating when you rely on forms for data entry. Many a time I had to try and explain to users what was happening. Additionally, I know of a bug that causes this to happen in OpenOffice.org when the form is stored on a network resource, such as a NFS or SMB file store. I haven't yet experimented to see whether this also happens in LibO, but I wouldn't be overly surprised. Alex No, Alex as far as I know I haven't zoomed in on anything. But I've never had this happen in OO. I think it's related to the other issues with Forms in Base that seem to have erupted in LO. I'm surprised that it also lost all of my previous settings. Alex I've given LO a couple of goes over the last few weeks and I just find the Base component is unusable. Forms that worked flawlessly on OO for several years suddenly don't work. One thing that I noticed is that for some reason LO resets to the original defaults randomly between uses-- fonts, macro security, background colours etc. The problem with this is the frustration of having to go back to the Options menu and put things back to the way that works for me, and then having to re-register databases. [libreoffice-users] Importing financial report into Write
I want to print a financial report worth data from my accounting program. The program produces a couple of formats for exporting the data- a text file, a html format that Libreoffice won't display correctly and a csv. Here is a part of a report Net Worth As of: 30/05/2014 AccountAmount JournalA$ 1,250.00 New Life MinistriesA$ 793.09 Orphanage AccountA$ 796.20 To get the kind of formatting I need, I could just import the text file and make each line expand to fill the width of the page. I can't see any way to do this- full justification doesn't apply to the last line in a paragraph- which is every line. Alternatively I could import it into a table, but it all gets put into a single cell. I imported it into a spreadsheet then copied it from there into Write. That worked out, but it is a bit clumsy. Is there a way to directly import the data in a way that produces easily readable data without an intermediate step?

[libreoffice-users] Embedding Video Files
Earlier this week, I produced a presentation with embedded video for use in a school classroom (NSW Department of Education, in case anyone has personal knowledge of their set-up). I am using Libre Office 5.3 and Ubuntu 17.04. I checked that the presentation worked, including the video. I saved it in .ppt format onto a USB stick with the video file, "just in case". This turned out to be a good thing. The classroom has an old version of MS Office (2010, I think I saw), a projector and a smart board. I don't know what version of Windows they are running. When I ran the presentation, everything went as expected. Touching the white board progressed the slides as expected. However I couldn't get the video to work from within the presentation, and had to run it from the media player. It's not a big problem, and I can work around it, but when you have a classroom of Year 4 and 5 kids, you don't want to get too distracted by the technology. Any ideas about how to make it work? [SOLVED] [libreoffice-users] Libreoffice corrupted by Ubuntu failed upgrade
You wouldn't believe how simple this was to fix! I considered doing the complete removal then re-installation but what put me off that was it wanted to remove gnome for some reason. Even removing just some of the components dragged gnome with it, and I am not keen on using linux without a desktop environment. I had a spare log-in profile already, and LO works in that profile. The thought of using one log-in to access software installed on a different log-in just seems too prone to messing up, but at least I knew there was an option there. In the end, I thought about it and realised that it is only templates that are the issue here, so let's examine the templates issue. I looked at the Path options in Tools-Options-Libre Office- Paths. It appears that for some reason LO had added my home directory as a path for templates, as well as the default path. I deleted the home directory, recreated the template folder in my config folder then copied my templates back in and now it's all working. Thank you for all the suggestions Keith On 21/4/19 8:56 pm, Keith Bates wrote: Hi all So I thought I would upgrade from Ubuntu to 18.10 to 19.04. Thanks, John. You are right. I always have to complicate things! Format- Text- Upper case Keith, I like your solution (and Brian's, which is as elegant as the way he presented it), but am confused about step 3: do you /really/ right-click (for context menu)? From step 1, you already have the first letter of each paragraph in focus; don't you just go from there to the main menu ? [The order of steps 2 and 3 has no effect - or, to put it another way, step 2 is not essential to your solution.] John -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: users+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? https://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: https://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ Privacy Policy: https://www.documentfoundation.org/privacy
[libreoffice-users] Connecting Document to Database
I have just done a fresh install of Ubuntu. I saved most of my stuff in the process, so that's a win. I am having a problem with a form for a database that I constructed without the help of the form wizard, many years ago. I know that I have to link or connect the form to the database but I can't find out how to do it. Can someone please refresh my memory? Hi Robert, I did that. Have a look for the Base file (*.odb). Go to Tools → Options → LibreOffice Base → Databases and register the database. Re: [libreoffice-users] Printing Issue
Thanks Howard, but that wasn't the issue. I fixed the problem about 20 minutes after I sent the email, like I usually do I turned the printer off and back on. Problem solved.
