I cannot ping my office desktop from my home machine or home machine
from the office. This would require a ping across the internet. Needless
to say, VNC will not work, either. Both machines are on DSL lines. One
machine is an XP, the other Win 2000. I've disabled Remote Administration

Dear Sir ,
I am using VNC to connect to my home PC which is connected by Dial UP ,
before connecting I always call my house and ask the the dynamicIP address

works fine
But When from my home I can not
If your office network is behind a firewall, it's possible that the firewall
is configured to filter ping in both directions (ie from outside to inside and vice
versa). At least, this is by default for Cisco firewall.
So, to ping your home PC, it is better to use an ISP account
First question, your DSL modem only has USB connection? No Ethernet port? If
you're doing more than simple websurfing, I would suggest you using Ethernet if
possible. I've a cable modem and before, I was using the USB connection to my PC but

I've just remembered one thing. publishing is supported in ISA (Internet
Security and Acceleration) server. I think I confused it with ICS :-p
If you're to buy ISA, it would really suggest you to buy a real _electronic_
router.

When I launch Xvnc and then connect to it I see only a gray desktop with
the mouse cross in the middle. What to do to have a WM, like icewm, or
something running, please? (~/.vnc/xstartup is present).
OS: linux AUROX9.1.

Hi,
Ik have seen several messages about this but most are about older versions
of VNC and don't describe my situation, I think.
Summary:
Connecting with VNC wil work initially, then later on it will no longer
work. Restarting VNC server or starting VNC helper will repeat this process.
I don't quite understand what you mean, but what I wanted to tell you is:
Try to isolate the source of problem
One point worths notice. When the connection isn't stable, VNC viewer shuts
down automatically.
