It has always seemed to me that problem resolution without the post-mortem
analysis is a good way to see the problem again.

Far too many people and organizations are in a hurry to dispose of the
problem without looking for the cause. Like treating the symptoms and
ignoring the disease. Perhaps effective in the short run, but costly in
the long run.

Again, thanks to all of you that helped,

complicated to answer that those card are not supported anymore. At
least, I'll be sure it's not my fault(my XF86Config is also in
attachement) and that I have to bought a new card, but I'm sure it's a
bug because october cvs work pretty well and that I haven't modified
 something.

We haven't dropped support for the Radeon 7200.
However, we are (almost) all volounteers; there is no-one whose job
it is to solve your problem.
If we don't have an answer yet there is no point in
saying anything until we have worked out a solution,
or until we need to contact you for more information.

I'm afraid the sad truth is that we cannot assign an engineer to every
bug report we recieve, and contact you to say that we are dealing with
your problem.

Re: [XFree86] [XFree86(TM) Bug Report] Nvidia Geforce2Go: autodetects1400x1050 LCD, then refuses to use it (hysnc out of range)

2003-01-20 Thread Keith R Kilby

Hi

Read with interest your post. I have successfully loaded Dell C810 Geforce2
Go under Redhat Linux 7.2 and Redhat 8.0.

Will admit though the install under 7.2 was difficult but the following site
has a good guide http://www.m5computersecurity.com/Linux-on-C810.html which
I found through Google and this site http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/.

Sorry haven't got the XFree version number handy for either installation.
On Redhat 8.0 I downloaded all the information on the nvidia pages and the
rpm's. I installed RedHat as a terminal only installation (ie I skipped the
X configuration bit). I then installed the Nvidia rpms and ran the redhat
xconfiguration worked a dream following the guide on the Nvidia website.

Regards
Keith

[XFree86] overlay support on matrix G400

2003-01-20 Thread Sune Rastad Bahn
Hi Xperts,

I have some applications which only supports 8 bit.
I would rather not have to run 8 bit on all application,
and since my graphics device is a matrox G400, I would
be able to use the 24+8 mode described in the man page
for mga. Unfortunately everytime I try to use it the xserver fails with the
error

No overlay visuals found!

The only reference on www I have been able to find is the source code (sic!)
at

http://www.atomised.org/docs/XFree86-4.2.1/hw_2xfree86_2xf8__32bpp_2cfbscrinit_8c-source.html

which doesn't help much with regard to how to configure X to avoid it.

Have anybody out there succeeded in running an xserver on matrox G400 with
both truecolor and pseudocolor visuals?

I use Xfree86 4.2.1

hope to hear from you

Try configuring with xf86cfg -textmode. Visit ALL seven menus. Don't
forget to save resulting config.

Regarding: logitech intellimouse, mouse behavior
Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

XFree86 Version: 4.2.1

OS: FreeBSD 4.7

Area: XF86Config, probably docu?

Server: XFree86 (The XFree86 4.x server)

Description:

Excuse if I'm not filling out fields correctly, but I'm new to this thing.
I'm using System mentioned above and I experienced unuseful mousebehavior when using
moused with /dev/sysmouse. For example, simple left-clicks only didn't mean a thing,
while mouse movement after single click like 'commits' the click.
I don't know if this is a bug in X, even if it's worth debugging it, as there is a
workaround for:
in the config file, make sure the mouse section contains the following lines:
option Protocol auto
option Device /dev/psm0

I just thought this hint would be useful to update the documentation.

when running a multithread application, any call to _XRead should
be done after a XLockDisplay is called. If you don't do that,
a call to _XRead may make a call to _XWaitForReadable that calls

this is not the case in :

Then I inserted a new PCI card, changed a few settings in the BIOS, upgraded

 === === ===

In fact even with the default Slackware kernel, X didn't want to run... so I
tried to undo all my changes since last successfull run, but couldn't make X
run again. I even tried to install cvs version but unsuccessfully.

I searched the Internet and found some hints such as adding 'Option NoInt10'
or 'Option NoDDC', or changing 'Driver i810' by 'Driver vesa', but
 none was working.

After a few hours I found this link :

 === === ===

So I realized that when X was working, I was launching Linux from the
bootdisk build by the Slackware install; while I was only using loadlin in
Win98's autoexec.bat since my kernel upgrade.

 So I tried to have 'BootGUI=0' in msdos.sys but X didn't run.

I checked the difference between my use of loadlin and the one in the
previous URL. I realized that I was using loadlin from autoexec.bat while it
was used from config.sys' shell command in the previous URL.

I changed my config.sys/autoexec.bat as following and now X is running if I
use the lnx2421 menuitem and not if I use casse :

I would recommend you to delete these lines as well. The DOS codepage and
keyboard table are useless here. And - as you have already seen - things been
loaded within dos (especially tsr-programs) might affect other OSes - since
no hard reboot is done, these things remain in memory.

These DOS drivers can cause strange behaviour: these days I needed to flash
the firmware of my wireless lan card. Tried to boot to plain dos gave me no
success, the flash tool exited with an error. After I tried many things
(tried to install Win to get real access to the pcmcia ports instead of the
port only access through the flash tool and several other things) suddenly
writing to the card worked. Did a clean reboot as I didn't want to run the
flash tool in a uncertain environment - same error as in the beginning. In
the end loading exactly these codepages and the german keyboard driver were
the causes for the error message. Removing everything from config.sys and
autoexec.bat was the solution.

Using lilo or grub seems the best and most clean solution to me.

Cheers,
Sebastian

That used to be the case, but I thought their latest drivers worked with

[XFree86] Radeon 7500 PCI w/ Dell FP monitors

2003-01-20 Thread Barry A. Warsaw
Hi all,

Please CC me as I am not on this mailing list, thanks.

I'm running RH7.3 on a machine with an ATI Radeon 7500 PCI 64MB card
(Built by ATI). I'm using the card in dual-head mode, driving two
Dell E171FP analog flat panels, with a DVI-VGA converter on the DVI
port. Xinerama is enabled.

The system basically works -- I've got a dual-headed X system running
just fine, but there are some display glitches that I can't seem to
get rid of. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First, the screen running off the VGA port looks pretty sharp, except
that there are ghost lines moving off to the right for all vertical
lines displayed. E.g. the inside left edge of my Mozilla windows has
about 5 ghost lines moving into the body of the window at decreasing
intensities. The problem is worse with saturated window border colors
(e.g. red) and light backgrounds.

Second, the screen driven off the DVI port has lots of fuzziness that
no amount of pixel clock or phase settings gets rid of. There are
very heavy vertical ghosts again moving off to the right, but they are
fewer, darker, and closer together than on the VGA screen.

Third, console mode has problems. While the text is quite sharp (in
contrast to the images under X), the two screens are mirrored and way
too far to the left. The left, say 1 or 2 of text is cut off.

I'm less suspicious about the monitors and cabling because I've driven
the same hardware off an ATI 8500 Mac card on my OSX G4 and they look
great. Very sharp, no ghosts, no glitches.

Any advice is greatly appreciated. I've attached my XF86Config-4 file
below. XFree86.0.log available on request.

X is still running but hangs somehow.

How do I get things cleared out so X will start again?

killall X or kill 2935 (or whatever the process id of X is) as root.
Or reboot (with ctrl-alt-delete so everything closes down properly).

It seems whatever happened blew my primary monitor, also.

Yes, apparently. That really boggles me.

I have everything on a UPS, so I don't think it was a power
 spike.

Most UPSes are not very good. They do paper over most of the 3rd world
power problems you have in the US but not all of them. The better
solution is of course to get a good power grid, like we have in the
civilized world ;)

No way. If you need it that bad you can call somebody else and pay for

  Hello,

I have a problem I'm hoping someone can help me with.

  I've been using XFree86 3.3.6 on my Sony Vaio PCG-FXA59 (FX705 in
europe) for about 5 months now and after a harddrive crash am back
  restoring the whole machine.

This laptop has what purports to be a ATI 3D Rage Mobility-M1 graphics
chip in it. It's supposed to be able to do 1400x1050. I was able to do
this resolution at 16bpp with 3.3.6 but it was slow as mud when moving
  windows, etc.

I just installed FreeBSD 5.0-RELEASE today and along with that came
XFree86 4.2.1. Dmesg from the OS is here:
  http://dub.net/vaio/dmesg

Running XFree86 -configure renders this file:
  http://dub.net/vaio/XF86Config-4.2.1

  Running XFree86 -xf86config path/to/XF86Config-4.2.1 creates this
  madness on the screen:
  http://dub.net/vaio/screen.jpg

Here's the 3.3.6 config that actually sorta worked:
  http://dub.net/vaio/XF86Config-3.3.6

As a side note before composing this email I checked out xf-4_2_99_3 and
tried to build it but the build died all three times I tried. The
world.log has crazy binary output at the bottom of it. Anyone that wants
to look at that can find it here: http://dub.net/vaio/world.log.gz

I'm going to attempt to build the newly tagged 4.2.99.4 and I'll repost
if I have any luck with that.

That's a good idea. If that doesn't work, re-run the server with
-logverbose 4 and send me the (large) log.

I'm still trying to build 4.2.99.4 and I'll let you know how that goes.
In the mean time the new verose log is at :
http://dub.net/vaio/XFree86.0.log

Just curious: which SVGA driver does 3.3.6 pick?

Doh, I'm not sure actually. It's been a long time since I fiddled with
3.3.6 and now don't have it installed on this machine.

Thanks!

-Bil

Yes, the process IDs are different, and I have tried killing every
applicable process by the most recent process ID numbers, always
with the same blacked screen and respawn that locks up.

Ok - I initially thought some glitch had happened that tripped the X
server and once you got rid of it things would work fine again.

Apparently that is not the case :(

Did you try a complete power off? (sometimes a reset isn't as complete
as a power off is)

How long had the machine been on before things went wrong? Could you have
done something that changed some configuration files some time ago without
restarting X or rebooting? I have seen this happen a couple of times,
where a machine seems to be perfectly configured until one tries to
restart a service or reboot it whereupon it trips on a broken
configuration file :/

Does the monitor work on other machines? If it didn't, that would be a
confirmation that something nasty really did happen to the power and that
your UPS didn't handle it all too well :/ In that case you might have an
acute case of bad hardware on your hand and no amount of reconfiguration
and software trickery will fix it :(

[XFree86] Please help i810+SamsungSyncMaster

2003-01-20 Thread Pavel
Hello!
I'm from Russia so please excuse my terrible english.
Please help me with my problem! My OS is FreeBSD 4.6 and
 I have a problem with X-server - i couldn't run it i good mode. I have motherboard
T810b-se with i810 chipset and onboard vigeo. My monitor is Samsung
SyncMaster 755DFX it's horizontal sync raange 30-85 kHz, vertical
50-160 Hz. My xfree version is 4.2.0. I think that the trouble is with
video card. I can run X-Server (KDE) with driver vga (standard VGA)
In that case the Device section in my XF86Config file is

identifier svga
driver vga

With standard VGA driver I can run X-Server in 320x200 (8 bit) or
640x480 (4 bit). I'd like to run it in the mode 800x600 (8 or 16 bit).
This mode is certainly supported by Intel 810 graphics controller. So
please tell me ho can I do that. I tryed to use VESA and i810 drivers
but when I startx my monitor's screen becomes black (monitor turns
off). With both these two drivers i tryed to specify many other
optons:
for the videoRam parameter I tryed to use 4096 (so it shown in Windows
2000) and 1024 values (so it shown in /root/XF86Config.new in
FreeBSD). I tryed to specify many other parameters such as Vendor, PCI
Bus, BoardName, chipset with values that shown in XF86Config.new. I
tryed to use XF86Config.new at the place of XF86Config. I tryed to
specify single monitor's horizSync and VertRefresh such as:
HorizSync 46.875
VertRefresh 75
(these parameters are written in monitor's documentation for 800x600
mode).
So my question is what shall i specify in XF86Config in device
Section.
Many thanks,
Petrov Pavel.

That looks weird. Does it always happen at the same place (with the same
 size NUL block)?

I don't think so but I can reproduce the result (my laptop powers off
,via ACPI presumedly) right when the X build crashes. There are multiple
logs from a few builds at dub.net/vaio/ both with 4.2.99.3 and 4.2.99.4.
