Re: XAA and banked memory

  XAA itself doesn't care.  You set the LINEAR_FRAMEBUFFER
in the XaaInfoRec Flags if you have a linear framebuffer.  If
you don't set that flag it won't put pixmaps in offscreen memory
(because the software rendering code won't be able to deal with
them), and it won't use an offscreen pixmap cache for the
same reason unless you provide XAA's ImageWrite, WritePixmap or
WritePixmapToCache replacement functions.

  The most difficult part of banked framebuffers is the software
fallback code.  I'm not sure what the status on the banking layer
is.  Marc La France would know.

2 questions about radeon driver

I have two questions for you about the radeon driver.  

the first relates to the CP and accel.  I'm attempting to convert the
Xv code to use the CP.  how do you check to find out if the driver is
using CP or MMIO accel?  I considered using
info-directRenderingEnabled, but as far as I can see the radeon can
use the CP for accel even if the DRI is disabled.  It's probably
obvious, I'm just missing it.

secondly, is there a way we could switch to software rendering if the
total width or height of or all rendering windows is larger than 2048? 
Since we seem to be hw limited by that, it'd be nice if the driver
would just switch to software after 2048 rather than just showing a
blank window or in some cases locking up the video card.  It might be
too much of a pain in the butt though...

No, it can't. There's also info-CPStarted which indicates whether the
CP is currently running.

(I assume you mean OpenGL software rendering)

I don't think this is possible with the current scheme, we simply need
to disable the DRI if the virtual resolution exceeds 2048 in either
dimension.

CP mode means using an engine on the chip
that gets the command data from main memory
by itselves, some sort of busmaster DMA stream.

MMIO means that the driver does program the
chipset directly via its memory mapped registers.

DRI means direct rendering and is the most common
socket for current OpenGL implementation upon
some kernel module supplied and shared resources.

XAA is the 2D accelleration which can be done 
either in MMIO (helps quite a lot for bring up)
or CP mode - it might make use of some kernel
module supplied resources in CP mode. But there
is no need or requirement that DRI is exposed
in that mode, only the other way round if you
are having DRI then its highly likely to have
the XAA running in CP mode as well. therefore
presence of HW accellerated OpenGL does indicate
that the XAA is as well running in CP mode.

If you need to know hos the XAA is operating
then you should hook into the driver. its not
common to let external applications know or
even assume either state because they are
outside of the 2D display driver.

let me assume you are trying something that
does go byond the concept - either you implement
Xv functionality inside or close to the 2D driver 
or you are asking for heavy trouble.

Hello!

My friend has a problem with the use of his additional mouse buttons.
He uses SuSE 8.2(KDE 3.1.1).  Its mouse is an Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 
(USB).
xmodmap -pp returns:

There are 7 pointer buttons defined.

It is to be converted e.g. pressing the lateral key in KDE-Instructions (like 
closing windows...).
Can someone help it?

If not, how can he do that exactly?
How have the entries for the Xmodmap to be?

Hi there.

I'm running Gentoo 1.4 on a Dell latitude c840 which can take resolutions up
to 1600x1200. I quickly get tired if using that resolution in X and I wish
to lower it since my screen is only 15.  The problem is that if I choose
any other resolution than 1600x1200 my picture gets smaller. Like when you
reset the settings on your monitor. The width and height of the image
doesn't use the entire area of the screen, and suddenly I have the
1600x1200-like problem again but with a lower resolution. I wish to use the
entire screen. I have figured out that DisplaySize in /etc/X11/XF86Config is
supposed to set the size of the monitor in millimeters, but xfree doesn't
seem to use the value given on this line at all. So I'm wondering what I'm
doing wrong or if I'm entering non-valid values. Everything else modified in
this file is used by xfree and the logs tell me that this is the file that
is loaded.

Google doesn't seem to be my friend anymore and I can't find much
information about this on the xfree.org site or anywhere else. So I'm asking
for your divine help.

The driver I use is the latest nv for my 32MB Geforce4-Go emerged as
nvidia-kernel
The screen is a TFT 15 that can deliver [EMAIL PROTECTED] at 16,8 million
colours (UXGA).
The width of the screen is 304,1 mm and the height 228,1 mm.
My wm is the latest version of fluxbox emerged.


I copied a part of the /etc/X11/XF86Config below. Please tell me if you need

you should check having suffient modelines
and modes listed in your /etc/X11/XF86Config(-4) file.

other than that, /var/log/XFree86.0.log does show
your more details on which specific parameter a
single given modeline is failing. most often the
h-sync and v-sync ranges are inapropiate.

[XFree86] XFree86 problems

Hello.

First of all I must say I am using Linux since a month (only in console 
mode... still trying to start X).  What I mean is that I am able to use 
commands but I still don't really know how configuration files work (still 
reading on that).  So, I am sending you the full message I reveive when I 
type startx  (it's joined to the E-Mail).  May be the Fatal error: No 
screens detected will seem strange to you (it is!) but I have to say my 
screen work (well... in console mode...).  Here is some information about my 
system, if it can help you.  I am using a pentium 133 mhz with a Ati 128 as 
video card.  The linux distribution I am using is Linux Mandrake 7.0.

It would be great if you could help me with this problem (I am stuck).  Tell 
me if you need any more information.

Note: This system was given to me by someone (he hadn't any information 
about it).  I am sure the video card is using a chipset Ati Rage 128 but I 
don't know if it's a fury or magnum or pro or whatever(it's not written on 
it).  It's the same thing for my monitor (it's written Magnavox on the 
front and Phillips at the back  and I don't know anything about the 
VertRefresh or the HorizSync.  That's why I put Ati Rage 128 (generic) 
as video card and the lowest numbers possible as VertRefresh, etc.

Note: Sorry for my poor english, I am french.  But if you can answer me, do 
it in english, I will understand.

What is MIME?

MIME stands for Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions.  It is the
standard for how to send multipart, multimedia, and binary data using the
world-wide Internet email system.  Typical uses of MIME include sending
images, audio, wordprocessing documents, programs, or even plain text
files when it is important that the mail system does not modify any part
of the file.  MIME also allows for labelling message parts so that a
recipient (or mail program) may determine what to do with them. 

How can I read a MIME message?

Since MIME is only a few years old, there are still some mailers in use
which do not understand MIME messages.  However, there are a growing
number of mail programs that have MIME support built-in.  (One popular
MIME-capable mailer for Unix, VMS and PCs is Pine, developed at the
University of Washington and available via anonymous FTP from the host
ftp.cac.washington.edu in the file /pine/pine.tar.Z)

In addition, several proprietary email systems provide MIME translation
capability in their Internet gateway products.  However, even if you do
not have access to a MIME-capable mailer or suitable gateway, there is
still hope! 

There are a number of stand-alone programs that can interpret a MIME
message.  One of the more versatile is called munpack.  It was developed
at Carnegie Mellon University and is available via anonymous FTP from the
host ftp.andrew.cmu.edu in the directory pub/mpack/.  There are versions
available for Unix, PC, Mac and Amiga systems.  For compabibility with
older forms of transferring binary files, the munpack program can also
decode messages in split-uuencoded format. 

Does MIME replace UUENCODE?

Yes.  UUENCODE has been used for some time for encoding binary files so
that they can be sent via Internet mail, but it has several technical
limitations and interoperability problems.  MIME uses a more robust
encoding called Base64 which has been carefully designed to survive the
message transformations made by certain email gateways. 

How can I learn more about MIME?

The MIME Internet standard is described in RFC-1521, available via
anonymous FTP from many different Internet hosts, including:

Anyone, had similar problems on a matrox G450 (Dual head) Videocard on a ibm
intellistation?

I think, i entered the values correctly V=120  H=130 DAC: 360MHz, etc.

I also choose on xf86config the list of chips, i choose matrox millennium
G400, i dont know if it had a problem if my M-G450 im using.
