Windows 2000 (Xmail Win32)?

I was stucked here for a while and now I could upgrade and test this newer 
version on a very busy server  (and report you problems).

[xmail] Strange error after upgrade

I don´t know exactly why, but after migrate to version 1.24 (+- 30 days 
ago), some users are getting this error randomly:

550 Relay Denied

when sending emails out of my server.

If they try once again, the message is delivered without problems.

Some tip?

Davide, I think so because these clients do not called us about this error 
before migration.

Some behavior was changed in server.tab about smtp authentication (I don´t 
found nothing that could lead to these errors reading changelog) ?

Your SMTP logs should tell you if it was XMail...

Yes, and smail logs too if outgoing mails out off xmail handled domains
This will show that xmail really tried to send out.

Question : did you get the ndr message from your customers as attached =
file
to keep it's smtp headers intact ?
Then study the ndr smtp headers to see the original mta sending it and =
it's
route (Receveived by). That will help you convince the customer that =
it's
not your xmail serve that refuse to relay :)

But, for some reason, even using 0 authenticated users are receiving:
'551 Server access forbidden by your IP'

Only after try, and try, and try (10 times or more) they could send the 
message.

Why XMail isn´t giving authenticated users the chance to send?

ps: XMail 1.25 Win32

little number of them are reliable, have good blakclists, verify each =

My CustMapList contains only one : spamhaus that seems to be the more
accurate, the more stable, ..., and I have around 99% rejections of bad
'guys' using it combined with glst.

One possibility, the mail reader does not actually authenticate. Very
likely.

A network capture can confirm 100% if the client tryed to auth or not.

Does the problem exist for any of your customers that auth or only some =
of
them ?
In this last case, does they have the same av ? same version ? same =
update
version ? and can you ask them to try to temporarly disabling outgoing =
smtp
scan for some hours (remember to close mua, chance av settings, =
restart
mua) to see if that help ?
I suggest this because I remember that sometimes some av updates had =
bugs in
they 'proxy' depending of the av version and/or after some updates. A =
real
example in mind :
With Norton 2004 Av (I don't remember exact version of updates causing =
the
trouble), with outgoing smtp scan enabled in the av, trying to do smtp =
auth
worked only if you explicitly re-enter user login and password in 'smtp
auth' dialog box (at least with Outlook/OutlookExpress and =
Thunderbird). Av
'proxy' didn't auth at all if you used default option in Outlook/OE to =
'use
same login and pass as for pop3'.
To be sure to not have auth problems, now our setup procedure is to =
allways
re-enter the login/pass in smtp auth (set 'use these login/pass for =
outgoing
smtp auth') in any mua. I never had any more the problem.

[xmail] XMail Win32 threads limit

Since a week we could note a massive (and abnormal) smtp connections in our 
XMail server (XMail 1.25 Win32 on Windows 2000 Server).
After many adjusts in XMail threads to support this DDOS, we could note an 
interesting thing: Windows 2000 Server does not support more than 1800 
threads (counting all kind, pop3 threads, smtp threads, mailer threads, 
etc).
After +-1800 threads, XMail.exe is still there but not answering anymore.

Could others XMail Win32 users confirm this value (1800) ?

SERVER SIDE
-EnableAuthSMTP-POP3 1
-Many CustMapsList configured

MUA SIDE:
-My server requires authentication *NOT* enabled

The client try to send a message (smtp) AFTER a POP3 *BUT* your ip is listed 
in some blacklist configured in CustMapsList.

Will XMail accept this smtp connection as authenticated?

It is *very* likely a VM space exhaustion due to the VM reservation that
needs to be done for each thread stack. In Linux (and some Unixes in
general) an `ulimit -s ` can solve the problem, that has been there
since the introduction of the NPTL library. In Windows, XMail uses the
default system stack size, even because there no completely portable (over
the whole Windows family, from NT, up) way to reduce it.
In general, 1000+ threads should be *more* than enough. I suggest you to
use some good Maps inside the server.tab file, so that connections gets
dropped immediately. I noticed the increase of spammer activity too, on
xmailserver.org. About little more than one year ago, I had about 2-3000
rejections at Maps level, whereas the last week I saw than jumping to more
than 40K.
Unfortunately, spammer's Mom is always pregnant.

should be 550 Denied due inclusion of your IP in=20
the following map (map name). Even if you=20

[xmail] Testing smtp authentication

I need some help in how to understand what exactly is happening with our 
XMail server.

Here we are using in server.tab:
CustMapsList 
zen.spamhaus.org.:0,dsn.rfc-ignorant.org.:0,bl.spamcop.net.:0

but some blacklisted ips are getting too many
'551 Server access forbidden by your IP'

If they retries for 2 or 3 times, the message was sent.

We tried to do not use CustMapsList but the number of spams increase too 
much.

I´m looking for a program that simulates a MUA and returns all messages that 
was returned by XMail Server (not via telnet because an user will do that).

Any help will be welcome.

I think it's a sort of default error message. Usually from
smtp.ipmap.tab, since the other IP-based blocks (CustMapsList and
spammers.tab) have their own messages.

Due some persistent problems with Outlook and Outlook Express with SMTP 
Authentication, we are instructing some companies that uses our services to 
install XMail Server internally.
But in Brazil many adsl connections uses dynamic ips and so we can´t open 
these ips in our smtprelay.tab

Is there any way to instruct our XMail Server to accept these messages that 
are being forwarded from these clients without use smtprelay.tab?

These users are (at this moment) using our smtp server to send their 
messages. But, for some strange reason that we could not solve until now, 
even with all kind of smtp authentication marked in their MUA the X-Auth 
field doesn´t arrives here (maybe a filter in their ISP, who knows?).

For those customers that have a valid and fixed IP address (and is having 
this kind of problem) we simple add their ip in our smtprelay.tab and force 
their local smtp server to forward smtp to our XMail Server - PROBLEM 
SOLVED.

But the problem resides on customers that doesn´t have a FIXED ip address. 
How will we add these ips in our smtprelay.tab?

What I´m asking is how to permit their smtp servers (many with XMail Server 
too) to forward messages to our XMail Server WITHOUT use smtprelay.tab?

covers +- 30% of the territory).

would solve the problem nicely (unless the ISP is blocking that port),

I don´t know exactly why but many clients are calling us about the error:
Server access forbidden by your IP

BUT, if they try 3 times consecutively, email is sended normally without the 
error.

In our server.tab I´m using only:
CustMapsList zen.spamhaus.org.:0,bl.spamcop.net.:0

In smtp.ipmap.tab:
0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 ALLOW 1


PS:
-All users are authenticated.
-Windows 2000 Server
-XMail 1.25 Win32

- Added NoAuth, EnableVRFY and EnableETRN settings inside IP 
properties.


The biggest change is the first. Since when XMail started delivering to
Maildir (long time ago), people started using XMail together with other
softwares that can get confused by the extra CR. How can this happen is
beyond my grasp, since handling both cases requires like one line of extra
code. But anyway.
One of the reasons why I chose to save the mailbox file in CRLF form, was
due to the fact that the message could have been delivered with fast OS
primitives, if already in CRLF (and hence RFC) form. This avoided creating
extra copies of the message file during the SMAIL processing.
In order to shove an extra file copy during the processing, I changed the
way temporary file are created when it comes to SMAIL local delivery.
Before such files were created inside the system temporary directory (/tmp
or %TEMP%), and then a copy+delete was done to move the message inside the
mailbox. The copy+delete was needed, insated of a standard OS move/rename,
because the mailbox mount/drive coulad have been located in another
mount/drive WRT the temporary directory.
Now things are changed and XMail will use a tmp directory inside
MAIL_ROOT.
What does it change for you? If you don't mount domain subdirectories to
other mount/drives (like 99% of XMail users), nothing. Xmail will
automatically create the tmp subdirectory and the switch to the new
version will be transparent.
If you happen to mount domain subdirectories onto other mount/drives WRT
MAIL_ROOT, you simply have to remember to create a .tmp directory at the
root of the directory mount/drive.

[xmail] XMail Win32 and drwtsn32.exe

I don´t know exactly what is happening with our server (Windows 2000 Server 
with all SPs and patches applied).
With any version of XMail that we use (1.25 or the newer 1.26-pre03) 
drwtsn32.exe is being opened every time that ctrlclnt.exe is called (nothing 
is logged in drwatson.log).

Any idea?

I think you need to try a ctrlclnt complied in debug mode (need to =

Using netstat -an I can see that port 465 was opened.

But, for some reason, we can´t authenticate any user using smtp tls.

I copied to windows\system32:
openssl.exe
libeay32.dll

And updated the files in mailroot/bin and mailroot/certs with those that are 
in win32sll (from source package).

But, for some reason, it isn´t working yet.

Port 465 is SMTPS, that's for pure SSL SMTP sessions.
By setting EnableSMTP-TLS you tell XMail to try a STARTTLS negotiation, if
the remote server allows it.
Did you setup the certs subdirectory, if you're using Windows (like
the SSLUseCertsDir suggests in the link I posted before)?

Using Outlook Express I can use TLS without problems.

Trying to use TLS via Google the following error is returned:
[Unspecified Error (SENT_SECOND_EHLO): Protocol error code(0) ]

Nothing is being logged in smtp* logs

Can you define isn't working a little bit further?
Check David Lord's email also, as for the difficulties of authenticate
with GOOG.

Some users that have domains hosted here wants to use gmail for other 
purposes.
But they wants to use yours accounts (hosted here) to send emails, but via 
gmail (something like a relay).
Gmail have a configuration called: SEND MAIL FROM ANOTHER ADDRESS ( 
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=enanswer=22370expand=sc1 ) 
where you can authenticate with an account from your domain and send email 
(from gmail) using that account.

I could be wrong but looks like Google uses TLS in this point, to relay the 
message.

Unless GOOG requires that *your* certificate is *not* self-signed, by
refusing to talk to your server after the initial SSL negotiation.

Windows 2000?! I wasn't even born in year 2000 :)
Seriously, I think there might be something wrong with your Win2K setup,
otherwise XMail (that does not include wspiapi.h) could not run on any
Win2K setup. And I know it does.
Maybe the definition of _WIN32_WINNT screwed that up, but I doubt, since a
missing ws2_32.dll is a more serious problem.
You can try the attached binary, but I doubt it helps, since it still
links to ws2_32.dll.

[xmail] SBS 2008 pop3connector

Is someone else having problem with this odd thing called SBS 2008 
pop3connector?
Many clients that use this connector are telling us that, for some reason, 
it is considering XMail´s headers as invalid.
Some information from Microsoft´s site:

Email Rejected Due to Protocol Errors (Invalid Headers)

Note: A long-term solution to this issue is being investigated

Exchange will close an SMTP connection after a certain number of protocol 
errors (5 by default). (see the MaxProtocolErrors property of the 
ReceiveConnector object at: 
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998618.aspx)

When the SBS 2008 pop3connector downloads a message from a POP3 mailbox, it 
needs to figure out what the return path for the mail should be, which it 
does by reading the email's headers. The pop3connector does not do 
validation of the header value--it lets Exchange take care of that. If the 
header value that the pop3connector chooses is malformed, when it is sent to 
the Exchange server (as part of the MAIL FROM command), Exchange will 
reject it with a 501 error. That counts as a protocol error, and therefore 
is counted against the MaxProtocolErrors limit. Since the pop3connector was 
not able to deliver the mail, and does not know if the mail is safe to 
delete, it leaves the mail on the POP3 server.

If there are 5 of these messages in your POP3 mailbox, then there will be 5 
protocol errors in the pop3connector's SMTP session, which hits the limit, 
and Exchange will end the session with a transient error (4xx). When this 
happens, the pop3connector recognizes that the error is transient, and will 
retry again at the next scheduled download period. But since those 5 
malformed messages are still in the POP3 mailbox, the same thing will 
continue to happen, with no forward progress being made.

The workaround is to increase the MaxProtocolErrors property of the 
Windows SBS Fax Sharepoint Receive connector, and then restart the Exchange 
Transport service for the change to take effect (and you'll have to restart 
the pop3connector service, too, since it depends on the Exchange Transport 
service). Unfortunately, you can't set that property from the Exchange 
management GUI, so you have to do it from an (elevated) Exchange Powershell 
prompt. Here are the instructions:

From an elevated Exchange Management Shell (Exchange Powershell window) 
(right click on Start--Microsoft Exchange Server 2007--Exchange 
Management Shell and then choose Run as administrator) run the following 
Powershell commands:

Set-ReceiveConnector -Identity ($Env:computername + \Windows SBS Fax 
Sharepoint Receive  + $Env:computername) -MaxProtocolErrors 500
Stop-Service pop3connector
Restart-Service -force MSExchangeTransportStart-Service pop3connector

That will increase the MaxProtocol errors (of the internal receive connector 
only) to match the pop3connector's max emails downloaded per session. Once 
you get 500 messages with malformed headers stacked up in the POP3 mailbox, 
though, you'll still have to delete them manually.

Yes, I will eventually release it of course.
But why you're asking for the official 1.27 release? Do you think I've
some sort of blessing power that will make a certain release stable just
by assigning a non-pre version?
Or that here there are 50 QA people thoroughly testing the pre-releases?
In open source, QA is *us* guys. For me, I can only say that every
pre-release is immediately run on my server, but that's about it.

After installing VC++ 2008 redistributables, the following error is being 
returned when trying to start xmail:

The procedure entry point freeaddrinfo could not be located in the dynamic

I think you don't need any .NET Framework 3.x (compact or not) but only VC++
2008 redistributables (include vc++2008 runtime libs, as is MSVCR90.dll)
(normally installing .Net framework 3.x is only necessary when using ..Net
objects/... Pure C/C++ code should not need them, just C/C++ runtime correct
version is necessary)

[xmail] Unable to load spool file

Hi all,

I´m using XMail Win32 for +- 8 years without problems.
But, since last week our server is logging several messages like this:

The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( XMail ) cannot be found. The 
local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message 
DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. The following 
information is part of the event:
ErrCode   = -55
ErrString = Invalid spool file
Unable to load spool file 
\\?\D:\MailRoot\spool\12\3\mess\1278337154020.9a4.4a8.333180.ntserver3
SMTP-Error = 554 Error loading spool file


I replaced the hard disk where XMail resides but theses errors continues to 
be generated.

Any idea?

directory (the message isn´t there).

You can try to to keep the frozen messages, and inspect those giving
error.
My guess is that's badly formatted (either by mistake or intentionally)
SPAM.

Don't many of them already know about greylisting and make sure outbound
messages are bound to a given server/IP?

But, when an IP is in the 3 lists, authenticated users must try to send the 
message 3 times (one for each list).

Is there any way to bypass these retries when a user is authenticated?

I don't think that XMail is still being developed and maintained.

But, just in case: a user of mine sent an email to 
first.l...@university.ac.uk? (note the trailing question mark).


XMail tried to deliver and failed for the following reason:

ErrCode  = -109
SMTP-Error = Unable to get UDP DNS response

Since I don't think the address should have passed the syntax check, I 
googled a bit and found that the address is RFC5322 compliant 
(http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc5322#section-3.4.1) but contains domain 
characters that are not allowed by DNS. Section 3.4.1 says that


  Note: A liberal syntax for the domain portion of addr-spec is
  given here.  However, the domain portion contains addressing
  information specified by and used in other protocols (e.g.,
  [RFC1034], [RFC1035], [RFC1123], [RFC5321]).  It is therefore
  incumbent upon implementations to conform to the syntax of
  addresses for the context in which they are used.

So, I think in general XMail should not accept such addresses (and, more 
generally, the reference for syntax check should be RFC5321 more than 
RFC5322).


Final note: this may be my last message on the list; my server will 
close in a few days, and that will be the end of my (very good) 
experience with XMail. I leave the suggestion to anybody willing to keep 
XMail alive.

Francesco, using nslookup or dig, how can I simulate a name resolution using 
this kind of dns name?

I´ve tried:
nslookup -type=MX university.ac.uk? MY-DNS-SERVER
and
dig university.ac.uk?

without success.

ps: Even nslookup -type=MX university.ac.uk MY-DNS-SERVER can´t find the 
correct address.

Are you sure that no anti-spam or some script is running in your server?
Xmail, by default, doesn´t add entries in theses files automatically.

Try to monitor these files with something like:
http://www.ihaveapc.com/2011/11/how-to-monitor-file-system-changes-in-linux-in-real-time/

to see which process is adding these entries.

I think that the best way to avoid this kind of problem is making an OUTPUT 
filter that insert email headers (from, to, date/time) into a sql table to 
EACH message your XMail sends.
So you can schedule another script in your OS (every 5 minutes, for example) 
that sum these table rows and take some action based on some rules (same 
FROM sending more than 5000 messages a day = BLOCK, same domain sending more 
than 2 messages a day = BLOCK, etc, etc).


Without this, you will became crazy trying to analyze tons os logs...

Remember that yout must ADD some flags values.
There are some examples in readme.txt

Here I have a filter that add 4 + 16 and returns this value. It´s working

I think that you are missing some points about filters.
Inside mailroot you will find 2 files:
filters.in.tab
filters.out.tab

for example, in filters.in.tab put something like:
* *@YOUR-DOMAIN 0.0.0.0/0 0.0.0.0/0 YOUR-DOMAIN.tab
After that, you must create a file inside FILTERS dir called: 
YOUR-DOMAIN.tab


So, inside FILTERS\YOUR-DOMAIN.TAB:
you must point to your script, etc, etc

README.TXT will help you with this.

Try to disable SMTP-RDNSCheck and use a SmartDNSHost pointing to some server 
inside your lan.

inside XMail ( if you set the rule to 1 ).

  I've checked the account contents and there's nothing there : 

  # cd /var/MailRoot/domains/the-mail.server.gr/the-account/Maildir/new
  # du -sch ../ ENTER
  # 4.0 K (about 4Kb)

  It has a quota of about 10Mb but if anyone sends anything to that specific 
account, it doesn't
  get through. A message comes back (to the sender) with the above error 
transcript instead .





  Any ideas ?

Is your ip range allowed in smtprelay.tab?
And about smtp.ipmap.tab ?
Do you have installed a new Xmail Server OR it stops after some time of

I have a mixed setup with DOVECAT for IMAP access, and XMAIl 1.27 for the
rest.  The relay is cosed until authentication is made In order to have a
centralized place for authentication I used in XMAIL external
authentication.  However seems it is not working as I receive 550 Relay
Denied when I try to send an email using this XMAIL server.
The setup is as following:
In smtpextauth.tab I put following line:
"LOGIN" "/config/scripts/checkSmtpAuth.sh" "@@AUTH" "@@USER" "@@PASS"
"@@RFILE"
In server tab I have:"DefaultSmtpPerms" "MRVZ"

In checkSmtpAuth.sh I always exit with 0 for testing.  However I received
550 Relay denied each time I tried to send an email.  If the script exits
with 1 then the error is different, (Authentication error).

I tried also populating RFILE with Perms=MR but without success. I tried
also with Perms=MRVZ . No change.
Also another issue is the fact that those RFILE files were never get
deleted.  For each email, that file is created and stays there forever
(need external action to delete it)
Is there any other settings that need to be made or is this a bug ?
Using internal authentication (smtpauth.tab or mailuser.tab) emptying
smtpextauth.tab  there is no such error, and everything works as expected.
Unfortunately there is no debug log in application, so only way to figure
out is DEBUG, and currently it is installed on an embedded router so no way
to debug.
