As a remedy, you can try to use portage with pypy. I've used this setup
for half a year and it works well.
make.conf:
PYTHON_TARGETS="python2
The package you're referring to have only support of python2 interpreters
(python2_7 (CPython) and pypy (not the pypy3)).
It seems, by default (if neither of PYTHON_SINGLE_TARGET is set), portage
tries to do the "magic" (well, in my opinion, it opposes to the Gentoo

running on CPython. While CPython
is the standard, it isn't the fastest way to run Python.
You could try switching over to PyPy, which uses a JIT-compiler that
CPython doesn't have. This should get quite a big performance boost, if
portage is being able to run under PyPy, that is.

the new setuptools-0.6.30-r1 ebuild has

Can anybody explain to me what's going on?
Many thanks,

No wonder you have
problems. Is it true? If so, you have a big job on your hands, and it may be
quicker and easier just to wipe and reinstall.
But, assuming you really have run eix-update today, eix should be showing
this:
Available versions: 2.3.66-r1 2.3.69{tbz2} [m]2.3.76 ~2.3.77

It seems to me that one could emerge portage with rsync-verify USE flag
disabled. After that, do one update, hopefully that

I think this will work:
