I've found pictures on-line with squirrels, primarily grays, looking
like the one I have at my feeders. The*Notodric* mange supposedly is
squirrel specific doesn't seem to cause the misery that Sarcoptic
mange does in other animals. Depending on health of the squirrel if it

In our backyard stands a large black walnut tree, which has become the focus
of a squirrel nut-gathering frenzy. This morning 3 Red Squirrels and 3 Gray
Squirrels were zipping up and down collecting nuts, then dashing into our
shed or down a squirrel trail to the hedgerow, and back again
inspection showed it staring at a GRAY SQUIRREL in a nearly pignut
hickory. Then began a game of cat-and-mouse that lasted 20 minutes. The
squirrel was in the central area of the large tree where there were 3 main
trunks and many large branches going off. It stayed in this area, I think,

Ravens seem to continue in the yard and neighboring area. A neighboring

As I drove up Ringwood Road from Ellis Hollow just now, near the crest of
the hill there was a somewhat foolhardy Ruffed Grouse strolling
nonchalantly out into the road. I swerved and luckily it flew off

On my afternoon walk today on somewhat breezy Mount Pleasant, I heard an
American Pipit in flight. A couple of days ago there was a sizable flock
of either American Pipits or Horned Larks way out in the fields, spooked
up by a Northern Harrier, but I was unable to identify them.

Two Common Ravens were feeding from a deer carcass next to the road just
east of the observatory on Mt Pleasant Road when I drove by 11:30 this

We built a Kestrel house and a Screech Owl house and put them out last
spring.with no takers.now they are occupied by squirrels. Our question
is.will a Kestrel or Screech Owl dislodge a squirrel from a prospective
nesting sight? Or are we going to have to build more nest boxes?

My resident Cooper's Hawk just nailed one of my two White Breasted Nuthatches,
which made me sad for the pair.
A squirrel soon after ran up a branch and approached the hawk, who was busy
plucking feathers from the Nuthatch body, so the hawk flew off across the road.

Handsome EASTERN TOWHEE and possibly 2 FIELD SPARROWS at my ground bird food
area just now.
Field Sparrows scared away by squirrel before I could really study them, but
there was definitely no dark spot on their chests as for Tree Sparrows. Bill

Those of us who read the list in digest form often have to wade through a large
amount of fluff to get to the meat of each report. We could avoid this by
remembering to delete all previous messages when writing our reply or reply all.

Yesterday morning's check of NEXRAD imagery showed heavy movement right up to

Pennsylvania line. This morning's check just exploded with images moving right

our area and slowing down due to the weather that passed through. Translation:

all the species have arrived throughout NYS! Heavy T-storms last night and

this AM precluded banding.New this morning are:

American Redstart
Wood Thrush
New arrivals today were Willow and Alder Flycatcher. Also banded three Pine
Siskins.
Looks like they may hang around to nest again this year; weve had at least four
consistently through winter/spring.
Sandhill Cranes may be nesting in Queen Catharine Marsh, Schuyler Cty. Two were
foraging a
A Junco banded here on 11/02/2010 was sighted near Laurelville, Ohio on
01/25/2012.
The band was read through binoculars. The bird was at least 3 years old.
