SQLite advertises itself as the "Most Widely Deployed and Used Database Engine": http://www.sqlite.org/mostdeployed.html This is not exactly the same as "popular". It is plausible that developers who choose a database indeed choose MySQL more often than any other database. (Even if most of those then end up being a single web server, instead of an app or an embedded device with lots of instances.)
