this is most likely an SSH setup issue. Both the client and server
in ssh can set timeouts.

in your client setup file (e.g. /etc/ssh/ssh_config) you can say
        ServerAliveInterval 300
and while you're at it, also do
        ForwardX11 yes

There is also a server option
        KeepAlive yes

soleus:~: Read from remote host soleus.umd.edu:

Connection to soleus.umd.edu closed.

This is very annoying as I need to run jobs that take
hours.

My collegue connects to the same machine and doesn't
have this problem. I don't remember having it before
-- it seems to have started when I changed routers.

Any ideas?
