Agreed. I nailed it down to the Apple CD-ROM ext and Sound Manager. Unfortunately, this machine is my daughters dedicated sampler/sequencer for her keyboards and it's hosting Digidesign Nubus hardware and software that must use a particular OS. Otherwise I wouldn't hesitate. So far so good and it's performing well and much snappier. Audio processing speed is definitely up. Sorry for posting this to this 68k list, but since I'm stuck with this older OS, I didn't think I'd get many answers on a PPC list. Thanks for all the help.
