If knowing people and being friends with them precludes scientific
independence than no such independence exists. Science is a small world.
Everyone knows everyone else. In 1989 and 1990, researchers in roughly 100
labs replicated Fleischmann and Pons. Just about every electrochemist who
did that was on a first-name basis with Fleischmann and Pons. There is not
an electrochemist in the world who did not know their reputations. That is
the only reason they took the claims seriously in the first place.
